Did You Know:  A chicken tractor is a movable pen with no bottom. This can be moved around the yard and the manure goes directly into the ground.

Jumbo Cornish Cross

The Jumbo Cornish Cross Chicken is a fast developing; broad breasted meat type chicken. Ready to dress in six weeks or sooner. Feed high protein feed that is 21% or better.  Fluid in the body cavity (Ascite) and/or leg weakness may result and it may be necessary to restrict the feed intake - slowing down the growth rate.

The picture above is of a Jumbo Cornish Cross Chicken that Victoria Strauser purchased from Cackle Hatchery in July 2012.  In her own words Victoria states, "In July I ordered a batch of 60 Jumbo Cross Broilers. Despite the extreme heat all summer in the Midwest , my chicks arrived in perfect health - with a few extras thrown in by your hatchery at no extra charge (thank you!).
All of the chicks were running around, eating and drinking on the first day. They were so healthy we were able to move them out of the brooder into our chicken tractor in the pasture by the age of 2 weeks.
At 8 weeks of age we butchered them - all 64! We had not lost a single chicken in 8 weeks. Our chickens post-processing have been weighing 5-5/12 #, even the hens - some we had trouble fitting into the oven bags!
We are completely thrilled with the health and quality of your birds and will definitely order them again next year."

Cornish Cross Chicken Breed Information and Chicken Facts

Cornish Cross Chicken Breed Information:

The Cornish Cross Chicken (Cornish X), (Cornish –Cross), (Broiler), (Cornish/rock), (Jumbo Cornish cross) is a cross between the Commercial Cornish chicken and a White Rock Chicken. They were developed for the commercial meat chicken market and have been dominating it for the past fifty years. They are a rapid grower and Cornish game hens for sale can reach 4 1/2 lbs by 6 wks of age and cockerels 6 lbs by 6 wks of age. They grow so fast that their legs may give out from their weight and it is not recommended that they be kept for breeding. You can take away the chicken feed at night to restrict the feed intake to slow the growth of the chicken. This will allow the bones and tendons to catch up with the rapid growth of the Cornish boiler or as some call a game hen. However, do not use small particle bedding (like saw dust or small shavings) because when restricting their feed they will eat too much of their bedding material and cause sickness and death. This breed is bred specifically to butcher or harvest and is not recommended for a pet and only for chickens for meat production. Generally, if the Cornish broiler chicken is NOT butchered/dressed it will have health issues with the heart, bones, muscles, tendon and sores from sitting all the time. This breed is your best option for efficient feed/time to butcher weight and is the best choice for raising chickens for meat. Cackle Hatchery®  currently hatches out the “Cobb 500” blood line/strain with occasionally hatching the “Ross 308” blood line/strain. It is recommended to harvest this chicken broiler between 4-10 weeks of age depending on desired weight. It takes roughly 14 lbs of feed to get 1 chick to 8 weeks of age. At 8 weeks the expected average weight (averaging for male and female) is 6 ½ pounds of live weight. Raise these chickens  in a free range chicken coop and try out your best chicken recipe for your family.

Cackle's Red Broiler Chicken Breed Information and Chicken Facts

Cackle's Red Broiler Chicken Breed Information:

A great alternative to the white commercial Cornish cross  broiler chicken and would be Cackle Hatchery® ’s second choice for best meat chickens for sale. Cackle’s red broiler is slower growing than the commercial Cornish cross broiler chicken but faster growing than the regular heritage chicken breeds. This makes for a great broiler without some of the health issues the commercial Cornish cross broiler might encounter. At 9-10 weeks the males should be at 6 lbs and the females should be at 5 lbs. They are easier to free range and manage foraging for food very well as compared to the Cornish cross chicken. You will love these chickens for raising chickens for meat and organic free range chickens. See some great chicken recipe books we offer in our Chicken Décor and Gifts for sale online with *Free Shipping.
