Description

The Black Runner Duck is an active, lightweight duck known for its upright posture, sleek body, strong foraging ability, and good egg production. Runner Ducks stand tall, move quickly, and bring a lively, eye-catching look to any duck flock.

Many people love Indian Runner Ducks because they behave differently than heavier domestic ducks. Instead of waddling, they run. They stay busy, move as a group, and constantly search for vegetation, insects, and other small food items.

Black Runner Ducks make a good choice for customers who want a productive, energetic duck with strong flock instincts and a unique upright shape.

Cackle Hatchery® cannot ship ducks to Hawaii.

Breed Overview and Origin

Indian Runner Ducks are native to Malaysia and have a long history as active, mobile ducks. People developed them for movement, foraging, and egg production rather than heavy meat use.

The breed joined the American Standard of Perfection in 1898. Since then, Runner Ducks have remained popular with customers who want a lightweight laying duck with personality, speed, and a one-of-a-kind body type.

The Black Runner offers the same classic Runner shape and active behavior, with attractive black plumage that stands out in the flock.

Appearance and Characteristics

Black Runner Ducks have a long, sleek body and an upright carriage. This posture gives them a tall, alert look that makes them easy to recognize.

They mature as lightweight ducks. Drakes generally reach about 4 to 4½ pounds, while hens mature at about 3½ to 4 pounds.

Their upright body shape also affects the way they move. Runner Ducks do not waddle like many other duck breeds. Instead, they move quickly and often look like they are running across the yard or pasture.

Egg Production

Black Runner Ducks are a very good egg-laying variety. They offer a practical choice for customers who want duck eggs from an active, lighter-bodied breed.

Although individual production can vary with feed, daylight, age, season, and management, Runner Ducks have a strong reputation as dependable layers.

Customers focused mainly on egg production may also want to compare Khaki Campbell Ducks, Golden 300 Hybrid Layer Ducks, White Layer Ducks, and Welsh Harlequin Ducks.

Foraging and Activity Level

Black Runner Ducks stay very active. They constantly search for vegetation, insects, and other small food items. Because of that, they can be a useful choice for customers who want ducks that forage throughout the day.

They can help clean up:

Vegetation
Weed seeds
Insects
Slugs
Small bugs
Natural forage

Even so, foraging should support a good feeding program, not replace it. Black Runner Ducks still need balanced duck feed, clean water, shelter, and predator protection.

Temperament and Flock Instinct

Black Runner Ducks have a strong flock instinct. They like to move as a group and often stay close to one another while exploring.

They also startle easily. For that reason, customers should handle them calmly and avoid sudden movements, loud chasing, or stressful routines. A quiet feeding schedule and steady management can help them feel more secure.

Runner Ducks are not usually the best choice for customers who want a slow, heavy, lap-pet type duck. However, they are excellent for customers who enjoy watching active birds move, forage, and interact as a flock.

Housing and Daily Care

Black Runner Ducks need secure housing, clean water, and enough space to move. Since they are active birds, they do best when customers provide outdoor access, safe foraging areas, and good predator protection.

A good setup should include:

Safe nighttime housing
Clean drinking water
Balanced duck or waterfowl feed
Dry bedding or resting areas
Predator protection
Shade in hot weather
Protection from wind and storms
Space for daily movement
Safe outdoor foraging areas

Runner Ducks do not need a large pond, but they do need clean water deep enough to wash their bills and maintain normal duck health.

Black Runner Ducks for Insect Control

Black Runner Ducks can be useful around farms, gardens, orchards, and homesteads because they actively search for insects and slugs.

Their lightweight build and constant movement help them cover ground well. As a result, they can be a good fit for customers who want ducks that stay busy outdoors.

However, customers should supervise them around gardens. Ducks may help with pest control, but they can also disturb young plants, muddy wet areas, or trample tender growth if they have unrestricted access.

Black Runner Duck vs Fawn and White Runner Duck

Black Runner Ducks and Fawn and White Runner Ducks share the same upright Runner body type and active behavior. The main difference is color.

Fawn and White Runner Ducks are one of the most popular Runner color varieties. Black Runner Ducks offer the same lively Runner traits with darker plumage.

Choose Black Runner Ducks if you want the classic Runner body shape with black feathering. Choose Fawn and White Runners if you prefer the more traditional and widely recognized Runner color pattern.

Black Runner Duck vs Chocolate Runner Duck

Black Runner Ducks and Chocolate Runner Ducks both bring strong foraging ability, good egg production, and upright movement to the flock.

Choose Black Runner Ducks if you want dark black plumage. Choose Chocolate Runner Ducks if you prefer rich brown coloring.

Both varieties suit customers who want active ducks with strong flock instincts and field-foraging ability.

Black Runner Duck vs Khaki Campbell Duck

Black Runner Ducks and Khaki Campbell Ducks both appeal to customers who want egg-laying ducks.

Choose Black Runner Ducks if you want an upright, mobile, active forager with a strong flock instinct.

Choose Khaki Campbell Ducks if you want a traditional laying duck breed with a more typical duck body shape and a long reputation for egg production.

Both can be good choices. However, Runner Ducks stand out for their posture, movement, and daily foraging activity.

Duckling Care After Arrival

Before Black Runner ducklings arrive, customers should prepare a clean, warm, and safe brooder.

A proper duckling setup should include:

A secure brooder
A proper heat source
Clean drinking water
Duckling feed or appropriate waterfowl starter
Dry bedding
Enough room to move away from heat
Protection from drafts, pets, and predators

Ducklings should always have access to water when eating. However, the water setup should limit splashing so the brooder stays as dry as possible.

As Black Runner ducklings grow, they will need more space, stronger bedding management, and safe outdoor transition areas.

Is This Breed Right for You?

Choose Black Runner Ducks if you want:

A lightweight duck breed
A very active forager
A good egg-laying duck
A duck with upright carriage
A bird that runs instead of waddles
A strong flocking duck
A dark-colored Runner variety
A duck for insect and vegetation cleanup
A fun breed for farms or homesteads
A duck with a unique look and lively behavior

Black Runner Ducks are not the best choice for customers who want a heavy meat duck, a slow-moving pond duck, a very calm pet duck, or ducklings shipped to Hawaii.

We have never had ducks before and I was skeptical. THEY ARE PRECIOUS! They get along perfectly with our chickens and they are so much fun!
