Breed Profile
French Black Copper Marans Chicken
APA 2011Breed Overview and Origin
The French Black Copper Marans chicken is a rare, dark egg layer with a loyal following. If you want a beautiful bird that can add deep chocolate-brown eggs to your basket, this is one of the best-known Marans varieties to consider.
Marans chickens originated near the port town of Marans, France. Breeders valued them as dual-purpose birds that could lay dark brown eggs and still carry useful body size for meat. The French type keeps the traditional lightly feathered legs, which helps separate it from English-style Marans lines. Cackle’s guide to English Marans or French Marans chickens explains that French Marans have sparsely feathered legs, while English breeders preferred clean-legged birds.
French Black Copper Marans remain harder to find in the United States than many common backyard breeds. Past import limits reduced genetic diversity, so careful breeding matters. Cackle continues working to improve egg color, genetic diversity, and overall flock health in this rare variety.
Appearance and Characteristics
French Black Copper Marans have rich black feathering with copper highlights, especially around the neck and saddle areas. Hens are usually darker and more subtle, while roosters show more copper color.
The French type has lightly feathered legs. You may also see faint white tips on a few leg feathers, which can happen in this line. As chicks and juveniles grow, some early feathering may change before the adult plumage comes in.
These birds bring a strong, elegant look to the flock. They are not just pretty, though. They also have practical value as dark egg layers and dual-purpose chickens.
French Black Copper Marans vs French Black Marans
French Black Copper Marans and French Black Marans both belong to the Marans family, and both can lay dark brown eggs. The main difference is color.
Choose French Black Copper Marans if you want black birds with copper coloring in the neck and hackle areas. Choose French Black Marans if you prefer a more solid black bird. Cackle notes that French Black Marans also produce deep chocolate-brown eggs and have a docile temperament.
Both are good options if your goal is a rare French Marans with dark eggs. Your choice may come down to feather color, availability, and the egg color goals of the specific flock.
Egg Production and Utility
French Black Copper Marans are famous for dark eggs. Their shells can range from reddish brown to deep chocolate brown, and some may show darker pigment or speckling. Egg color often changes through the laying cycle, so a hen may lay darker eggs at certain times and lighter eggs later in the season.
Cackle’s French Black Copper Marans page notes that this variety is known for deep chocolate-brown eggs and often measures between #4 and #6 on the Marans egg color scale. Your original Cackle copy also notes that Cackle flocks have produced shell colors in the #4–#8 range, with a small percentage reaching #9 in the 2022 season.
Good feed supports strong shells, but genetics drive the deepest color. Selective breeding, careful flock management, and fresh bloodlines all help improve shell color over time.

Temperament and Suitability
French Black Copper Marans can work well in backyard flocks, homesteads, and dark egg layer projects. They are active, useful birds with enough body size for dual-purpose value.
Because they have feathered legs, keep an eye on mud, wet bedding, and snow buildup. A dry run, clean bedding, and good drainage help keep feathered feet in better shape.
Sexing this breed can be harder than with many other chicks. Cackle notes that while many breeds average around 90% gender accuracy, French Marans have a 75% sexing guarantee because the vent sexing determination is more difficult. That is worth knowing before you order pullets.

Breed History and Preservation
Marans chickens developed in western France near the port town of Marans. Farmers wanted practical birds that could lay dark eggs, grow well, and provide meat value.
French Marans became known for feathered legs and dark shell color. English breeders later preferred clean-legged Marans, which is why you now see both French and English types discussed in poultry circles. Cackle’s English Marans or French Marans Chicken? article gives a clear explanation of that difference.
In the United States, import restrictions made French Marans harder to source and reduced the available gene pool. That is why careful breeding matters so much with French Black Copper Marans. Each season of selection can help strengthen egg color, vigor, and flock health.
Recognition and Availability
Marans are recognized in the American Poultry Association’s Continental class, but not every color variety has the same recognition status. French Black Copper Marans are best known among backyard keepers for their dark eggs and feather-legged French type.
Quantities can be limited because this is a rarer variety. If you want to build a dark egg layer flock, check the Availability Chart before planning your order. You may also want to compare Dark Brown Egg Pullet Surplus or French Marans Pullet Surplus when those options fit your flock plans.
