Breed Overview and Origin
The Khaki Campbell Duck originated in England in 1901. Adele Campbell developed the breed with a focus on egg production, active foraging, and practical flock use.
Over time, Khaki Campbells became known as one of the most prolific egg-laying duck breeds. Their reputation for production makes them a popular choice for customers who want duck eggs for home kitchens, baking, farm stands, and homestead food production.
The American Poultry Association admitted the Khaki Campbell Duck into the American Standard of Perfection in 1941.
Appearance and Characteristics
Khaki Campbell Ducks have a practical, earthy appearance that matches their name. Their plumage carries shades of khaki tan, giving the breed a soft brown look that blends well in farm and backyard settings.
Khaki Campbell drakes have an upright posture, green or bluish-green bills, and greenish-bronze heads and backs. The rest of the plumage is generally a shade of khaki tan.
Hens are also khaki-toned, with a more modest appearance than drakes. Their simple coloring pairs well with their practical purpose as productive laying ducks.
Egg Production
Khaki Campbell Ducks are one of the most prolific egg-laying duck breeds. For customers who want duck eggs for cooking, baking, or regular kitchen use, this breed is a strong choice.
Generally, a Khaki Campbell hen may lay her first egg at about 20 weeks of age, depending on season, daylight, feed, health, and management.
Duck eggs are valued by many customers because they are rich, useful in baking, and larger than many chicken eggs. Since Khaki Campbells focus strongly on laying, they can be a practical breed for customers who want more eggs from a duck flock.
Foraging and Activity Level
Khaki Campbells are avid foragers. They stay active and enjoy searching for insects, greens, slugs, and other small food items when given safe outdoor access.
Their activity makes them a useful fit for farms, gardens, orchards, and homesteads. However, customers should still provide balanced feed, clean water, safe housing, and predator protection.
Foraging helps support natural behavior, but it does not replace proper nutrition. A steady feeding program helps hens maintain better laying performance.
Temperament and Flock Management
Khaki Campbell Ducks are active, useful, and practical. They are not heavy, slow-moving ducks. Instead, they spend much of their time moving, foraging, and exploring.
Because they are active birds, customers should give them enough room to move and a steady routine that keeps them from becoming overly stressed. Calm handling, reliable feeding times, and safe housing can help them settle into a backyard or farm setting.
They can make good farm or backyard ducks when customers provide the basics: feed, water, shelter, space, and predator protection.
Khaki Campbell Ducks for Backyard Flocks
Khaki Campbells can be a good choice for backyard duck keepers who want eggs and daily activity. They are especially useful for customers who care more about laying performance than a large meat-type body.
They can work well in:
Backyard flocks
Homesteads
Small farms
Garden areas with supervision
Orchards
Egg-focused duck flocks
Mixed duck flocks
Since they are active foragers, customers should provide safe outdoor access when possible. At the same time, they should protect them from predators and avoid letting them damage tender garden plants.
Khaki Campbell Duck vs Golden 300 Hybrid Layer Duck
Khaki Campbell Ducks and Golden 300 Hybrid Layer Ducks both appeal to customers who want egg production.
Choose Khaki Campbells if you want a traditional English laying duck breed with a long reputation for prolific egg production and active foraging.
Choose Golden 300 Hybrid Layer Ducks if you want a modern hybrid layer developed for efficient egg production, larger eggs, higher fertility, and calmer production-flock behavior.
Both can work well for duck egg customers. However, the better choice depends on whether you prefer a traditional breed or a modern hybrid layer.
Khaki Campbell Duck vs White Layer Duck
Khaki Campbell Ducks and White Layer Ducks both serve egg-focused customers.
Choose Khaki Campbells if you want a prolific laying breed with khaki-brown plumage and active foraging ability.
Choose White Layer Ducks if you want a production duck developed specifically for white egg production.
Both breeds suit customers who want duck eggs, but White Layer Ducks may appeal more to customers who need white eggs for a specific culinary or specialty market.
Khaki Campbell Duck vs Runner Ducks
Khaki Campbell Ducks and Runner Ducks both stay active and can lay well, but they have different body types.
Choose Khaki Campbells if you want a proven egg-laying duck with a more typical duck shape and a strong production reputation.
Choose Fawn and White Runner Ducks, Black Runner Ducks, Blue Runner Ducks, or Chocolate Runner Ducks if you want upright, highly mobile ducks known for running rather than waddling.
Both types can be useful, but Runner Ducks stand out for posture and mobility, while Khaki Campbells stand out for egg-laying reputation.

Duckling Care After Arrival
Before Khaki Campbell ducklings arrive, customers should prepare a clean, warm, and safe brooder.
A proper duckling setup should include:
A secure brooder
A proper heat source
Clean drinking water
Duckling feed or appropriate waterfowl starter
Dry bedding
Enough room to move away from heat
Protection from drafts, pets, and predators
Ducklings should always have access to water when eating. However, the water setup should reduce splashing so the brooder stays as dry as possible.
As Khaki Campbell ducklings grow, they will need more room, stronger bedding management, and safe outdoor transition areas.
