Description
Silver Laced Cochin Standard Chicken
Breed Overview and Origin
The Silver Cochin Standard Chicken is a large, gentle, feather-legged chicken with fluffy plumage and a striking silver laced appearance. If you want a beautiful bird for a family flock, ornamental coop, or broody hen project, this Cochin variety is a strong choice.
Cochins are known for their size, soft feathering, feathered legs, and calm personalities. This standard-size variety carries those classic traits while adding a rare laced color pattern that makes it stand out in the flock.
Cackle Hatchery® offers Silver Laced Cochin Standard Chickens as baby chicks. The product page notes that Cackle’s breeding farm has developed pure color varieties of standard-size Cochins since 1975, and the breed carries Watch status through The Livestock Conservancy.
Appearance and Characteristics
These large Cochins have soft, full feathering, feathered legs and feet, and silver-patterned plumage with dark lacing. Their rounded body shape and heavy feathering give them a fluffy, impressive look.
Although the bird itself is large, hens lay small to medium brown eggs. Customers should choose this breed more for beauty, temperament, broodiness, and ornamental value than for high egg production.
Because of the feathered legs and feet, clean and dry housing is important. Wet bedding, mud, and snow can collect in the foot feathers, so a covered run, dry litter, and regular foot checks help keep them comfortable.
Rare Silver Laced Color
The silver laced pattern is one of the most difficult Cochin plumage patterns to perfect. Cackle’s blog Silver Laced and Golden Laced Cochins in the Spotlight explains that Silver and Golden Laced Cochins have some of the rarest and hardest plumage patterns in the Cochin breed family.
That makes this variety a special choice for customers who enjoy rare poultry, ornamental chickens, or hard-to-find Cochin colors. The silver-and-dark contrast gives the bird a refined look while still keeping the soft, oversized Cochin style.
Silver Cochin Standard vs Golden Laced Cochin Standard
Silver and Golden Laced Cochins share the same large body, feathered legs, gentle temperament, and difficult laced feather pattern. The main difference is color.
Choose this variety if you prefer a cooler silver-and-dark laced look. Choose Golden Laced Cochin Standard Chickens if you prefer warmer gold-and-black lacing.
Both are visually striking and rare. Customers interested in these laced color patterns should also read Cackle’s Silver Laced and Golden Laced Cochins in the Spotlight for more background on why these colors are difficult to perfect.
Comparing Other Cochin Standard Varieties
This silver laced variety shares the same large body, calm temperament, soft feathering, and feathered feet found in other standard Cochins. The main difference is feather color.
Customers who like Cochins may also want to compare Barred Cochin Standard Chickens, Blue Cochin Standard Chickens, Buff Cochin Standard Chickens, Golden Laced Cochin Standard Chickens, Splash Cochin Standard Chickens, and White Cochin Standard Chickens. Cackle’s standard Cochin product pages identify these as pure color varieties developed through Cackle’s breeding farm.
Customers who are flexible on color may also like the Standard Cochin Surplus Chicken Special, a hatchery choice option for standard Cochins.
Egg Production and Utility
Hens may lay small to medium brown eggs, but this is not a high-production laying breed. Most customers choose Cochins for their calm temperament, feathered legs, ornamental value, broodiness, and family-friendly nature.
Cochin hens are often good broodies and can do well raising chicks. That makes this variety useful for customers who want a natural mothering hen in the flock.
If your main goal is maximum egg production, choose a dedicated laying breed. However, if you want a gentle, fluffy, large chicken with beauty and mothering ability, this variety is a great option.
Temperament and Suitability
This breed is gentle, tame, and easy to enjoy. Its calm nature makes it a good choice for family farms, backyard flocks, ornamental coops, and customers who want a large chicken with a soft personality.
The original product copy notes that this bird can be a good family pet or a hen to raise chicks. That combination of calm temperament and broodiness is one of the reasons Cochins remain so popular.
Because these birds are large and heavily feathered, they need enough room to move comfortably. They also need clean water, balanced feed, predator protection, shade during hot weather, and dry bedding.
Feathered Feet Care
Feathered legs and feet are one of the most recognizable Cochin traits. They add beauty, but they also require practical care.
Keep bedding dry, avoid muddy runs when possible, and check the feet during wet or snowy weather. Packed mud, ice, or debris can collect in the feathers. Low roosts can also help large Cochins get on and off the perch safely.
For general chick and flock care, Cackle’s Chicken Care Instructions page is a helpful internal resource.
Broodiness and Mothering Ability
Many Cochin hens are reliable broodies and may do well raising chicks. This makes them appealing for customers who want a natural incubator and mothering hen.
However, broodiness can also reduce egg collection when a hen decides to sit. Customers who want steady production should keep this in mind. Customers who value natural chick raising may see broodiness as a major benefit.
Show and Ornamental Value
This silver laced variety has strong ornamental appeal because of its large body, fluffy feathering, feathered legs, and detailed laced pattern. It can be a beautiful addition to a show-minded flock or ornamental poultry yard.
For best condition, customers should keep birds in clean, dry housing, protect the foot feathering, and handle them calmly. Clean feathering is especially important for large feather-legged breeds.
Is This Breed Right for Your Flock?
Choose this variety if you want:
A large standard-size Cochin
A silver laced feather pattern
A gentle backyard chicken
A tame family farm bird
A feather-legged chicken
A broody hen that may raise chicks
A calm ornamental breed
A rare laced Cochin color
A standard Cochin surplus option to compare
A Cackle bloodline developed since 1975
Overall, this is a great choice if you want a large, gentle, beautiful chicken with strong family-farm appeal. It is not the best option for maximum egg production, but it is excellent for customers who want ornamental value, broodiness, calm temperament, and classic Cochin charm.

Breed History and Preservation
Cochins became famous in America during the 1800s because of their impressive size, abundant feathering, feathered legs, and calm temperament. They helped shape the early poultry fancy movement and remain popular with customers who want large ornamental chickens.
The silver laced pattern gives this standard-size bird a refined, detailed look while still keeping the soft, rounded Cochin type. Cackle’s listing connects this variety to its long-running standard Cochin breeding program, which has developed pure color varieties since 1975.
Today, this variety remains a good choice for customers who want a gentle, heritage-style chicken with beauty, size, and a friendly disposition.

I got my chicks in August. They are doing great. So heavy the rousting bar broke!!!! Very healthy and fun babies.
Megan Radtke –
I ordered 3 silver, 3 golden and 3 buff cochin. I received 4 silver, 4 golden, and 3 buff which was great except I ended up with only 1 hen (golden) out of the 11 received!!! I’m incredibly disappointed. For the most part all were healthy except one buff but they still all have survived to 16 weeks. Most were pretty chill except the silvers. They have been absolute jerks from the start. Would’ve been happier if the hen to roo ratio was better.
Dianne Shoenfelt –
My first time ordering chicks from Cackle hatchery. The shipping was super fast and the chicks arrived healthy, lively, energetic and strong! Thanks for the extra chick! These are the healthiest chicks I’ve ever received by mail. Best mail order experience ever! Will be ordering again!

Roosters were Nice but Pullet Undersized
I received 3 Silver Laced Cochins & 3 Buff Cochins all unsexed. The 2 Silver roosters, 2 Buff roosters, & Buff Pullet are all good sized beautiful birds. The Silver Pullet is beautiful, but considerably undersized.

Polish Chickens
If you are not familiar with Polish chickens like I was when I ordered them a couple things to know. Polish roosters are not very friendly and are very aggressive towards the more relaxed breeds like the cochins. Polish hens are timid and tend to be picked on by other breeds. Therefore, I would not suggest mixing Polish’s with other breeds, just my opinion.

Happy Customer
I just wanted to send a note saying how happy we are with our recent purchase. We ordered 15 chicks and got 16 happy, healthy fluff balls last week. They all seem in great condition and I appreciated the info and help I received when you guys called me after placing my order. Thanks again.

Our new chicks
Our new babies arrived yesterday. I want to commend you. They arrived carefully packaged with the somewhat larger chicks in a separate space and all looking spry and safe. I had sworn I would never order from a hatchery again after an absolutely HORRIBLE experience one time with another hatchery. If you order less than 25 they put in extra chicks for warmth during shipping. i didn’t know that having never ordered them before and I ordered 20 banties. Some person put in extra-regular-size chicks (leghorns) with the banties and seven of my little banties were crushed in transit. Nevertheless, nothing would bring back those poor little chicks and I knew I would never do business with them again. When we have occasion to order chicks again, you can be assured it will be from Cackle Hatchery.

Thanks!
Not to worry, our chicks came in the noontime delivery. They seem to all be in good shape. The Cochin substitution for one Yokohoma was fine. Yokohomas are beautiful birds. We may find that we will want a few more later. I really appreciate your commitment to perpetuating rare breeds. I believe the narrowing of our livestock gene pool puts agriculture at risk. My daughter is looking forward to a blue ribbon at the County Fair. She’s ready to put in the work.
