Description

White Cochin Bantam Chicken

Breed History and Origin

The team at Cackle Hatchery® is proud to offer the White Cochin Bantam, a long-established miniature version of the Standard Cochin breed. Cochins originated in Asia and gained popularity in the United States in the 1800s due to their size, feathering, and calm temperament. The bantam version carries these same traits in a smaller form and has been recognized by the American Standard of Perfection since 1874. Cackle Hatchery® has been developing its own bloodline or strain of pure Cochin Bantams since 1971, focusing on feather quality, temperament, and overall consistency.

Appearance and Breed Characteristics

The White Cochin Bantam is known for its clean, bright white feathering combined with the breed’s signature fluffy appearance. Heavy plumage extends across the body and down the legs and feet, placing it in the Feather Legged Bantam class. This dense feathering gives the bird a rounded, full-bodied look that makes it appear larger than its actual size. Mature roosters typically weigh around 30 ounces and hens around 26 ounces, with pullets and cockerels slightly smaller. The uniform white coloration makes them especially striking in both backyard and exhibition settings.

Egg Production and Broodiness

The White Cochin Bantam offers fair egg production for a bantam, laying small brown eggs on a consistent but moderate basis. One of the breed’s strongest traits is its broodiness. Hens are dependable setters and are frequently used to hatch eggs, making them a valuable addition to any flock needing a reliable broody hen. Fertility typically ranges from 40–55%, with a recommended mating ratio of approximately six females to one male.

Temperament and Backyard Suitability

This breed is extremely docile and easy to handle, making it one of the best choices for families, beginners, and backyard keepers. They are calm birds that integrate well with other gentle breeds and are often kept as pets due to their friendly nature. Their small size and low feed requirements make them efficient to maintain. Due to their feathered legs and heavier build, they prefer lower roosts, typically between 0 to 2 feet, and benefit from clean, dry housing conditions.

Production Positioning and Exhibition Use

The White Cochin Bantam is best positioned as a pet, broody hen, and ornamental breed with light egg production. While they do lay eggs, their primary value lies in their temperament, broodiness, and clean, uniform appearance. They are also a strong exhibition bird, particularly when feather quality and color consistency are well maintained.

Breeding Note / Color Note

Maintaining a clean, bright white color without staining or discoloration is important for exhibition-quality birds. Because white feathers can show dirt easily, proper management and selective breeding both play a role in maintaining their appearance. Attention should also be given to preserving dense feathering and proper body structure.

I received some white bantam cochins alongside some other types and these most definitely have personality! They love to talk and make their presence known. They’re very lovable.

  2. Jonathan Weaver

My favorite are the batam cochin bantams. I have ordered the white, buff and splash and love them all. great birds, friendly and they dont have a high clearance so fencing them is easy. Plus they are pretty birds.

    Very Excited arrival day…;)

I ordered for the first time baby chicks through the mail.
    16 June 2017
5 different types of 5 baby chicks per breed
    Old English Bantams.
Then added 5 White Cochin Bantams to my order about a week later. Was expecting 30 baby chicks. Due to my excitement and concern I have called Cackle Hatchery several times, past few days and the post office…lol.
Both were very kind and answered and explained the process. Ensured me everything was going to plan.
I picked up my chicks this morning 28 June 2017 and I had 35 baby chicks…:).
I think …. They were running around would not stay still so hard to count. Had a few that looked weak, but followed the instructions given had proper heat and space. They all seemed to be eating and drinking.. Very Excited for this Great Experience.

    Thank you,
