Description

Blue Cochin Standard Chicken

Breed History and Origin

Have you been searching for a unique bird for your home or farm? At Cackle Hatchery® we offer several varieties of the standard size Cochin, a docile bird that was first introduced to America in the 1800s. Originating from Asia, the Cochin became well known for its size, feathering, and calm nature, and the Blue Cochin Standard was later recognized by the American Standard of Perfection in 1965. Cackle Hatchery® Poultry Breeding Farm has been developing its bloodline or strain of pure color varieties of standard size Cochin chickens since 1975, and we added new bloodline from Roland Doerr in 2009 to help maintain size and vigor.

Appearance and Breed Characteristics

The Blue Cochin Standard is notable for its large size, soft fluffy feathering, and heavily feathered legs and feet. This variety has a blue tint to its feathers and is especially admired for its ornamental appearance and impressive body size. Mature hens typically weigh around 8½ pounds, while roosters average about 11 pounds. Pullets generally weigh about 7 pounds and cockerels about 9 pounds, making this one of the heavier ornamental chicken breeds.

Egg Production and Broodiness

You can expect this breed to lay medium to large brown eggs, with hens producing approximately 110 to 160 eggs per year depending on care and environment. While Cochins are not high-production birds, they are dependable seasonal layers and are especially known for being setter hens that do well raising chicks. Their broody nature makes them useful in backyard flocks where natural hatching is desired.

Temperament and Backyard Suitability

The Blue Cochin Standard is known for its docile temperament and calm disposition, making it a good fit for backyard flocks, families, and hobby farms. Because of their heavy feathering and body size, they do best with low roost heights of 0 to 2 feet and clean, dry conditions to help maintain feather quality. Fertility percentages generally range between 40 to 55 percent, with a recommended mating ratio of 6 females to 1 male.

Production Positioning and Exhibition Use

This is an ornamental and meat-type exhibition bird rather than a true production breed. The Blue Cochin Standard is best suited for backyard enjoyment, broody hen use, and exhibition value rather than maximum egg output. Breeding Note

Please read the link below about splash/blue color breeding. Like other blue varieties of poultry, Blue Cochins do not breed true to color and can produce blue, black, and splash offspring. https://www.cacklehatchery.com/guarantees-policies/#breedingblue

Ordered 3 blue cochins with an assortment of other chicks in August. Received four healthy chicks. One went on to develop leg and growth issues and ultimately died because of his difficulties navigating the coop. Only disappointment was that two of the chicks were far more black than blue. One grew up to be a beautiful black rooster with an iridescent green sheen to his feathers and is absolutely gorgeous. Three out of the four turned out to be roosters and all are incredibly sweet so far. Love how fully feathered and fluffy they are.

Great Birds, Lovely color and are growing like weeds. All arrived safe and months later doing great. No losses. Very friendly and calm. I will purchase more!

First, I have never received a bad order from Cackle Hatchery.

We picked up a decent sized order from the hatchery which included 3 Blue Standard Cochins. I have bred to make the “blue” before, however I don’t have any of the remaining stock and wanted to have the blues in my yard. The 3 from Cackle are amazing. They have beautiful feathered legs and the color is amazing. We have always loved cochins on our farm and these do not disappoint.

Order away, you will not be disappointed. If you pick them up in person, you may even snag some you weren’t expecting when you see what is available that day…

I received my Cackle Hatchery Blue Cochin hen as a gift from a friend. She lays an egg almost every day, even in freezing weather (when not sitting eggs), and last summer she raised 2 clutches of chicks. She was an excellent mother.

    Blue Cochin

So happy Cackle Hatchery chicks are sold at my local Farm&Fleet. Normal I order from another hatchery because I can order sexed birds but Cackle saved me this year as the other hatchery was sold out of my Blues, 2 months ago. I had a racoon ransack my coop killing all but 1 of my Blue girls early this spring. Thanks for the save Cackle Hatchery, these Blue Cochinsare my favorite and I’ve been raising birds since I was little!!!

  6. HMurray

    Blue Cochins

We ordered our blue Cochin chicks this past spring and we ended up with a hen and a rooster. They are beautiful and healthy! The rooster is absolutely stunning and actually has a friendly demeanor! Cackle Hatchery has never let us down so it is no surprise this breed did not disappoint.

    Beautiful Birds

I ordered 10 straight run. I ended up with 3 roosters. 4 black hens and 3 blue hens. The birds arrived healthy with lots of energy and have not slowed down. They are big and beautiful. I didn’t buy them for their eggs. But they are now laying consistently at 7 months old. If you are looking for a comical bird with lots of personality that will crack you up when they try to run, these are your girls. They are a wonderful addition.

  8. Beautiful Blue Cochins

    Wonderful, beautiful birds

We ordered 15 Blue Cochins last spring. They all arrived safely and healthy. It is several months later now and they are mature and laying eggs. Beautiful coloring and very docile. Will order again!

    Beautiful chickens

I ordered 3 standard blue Cochin chickens as straight runs and ended up with 3 hens. They are the most beautiful chickens that I have ever seen. Cackle Hatchery’s stock is superb. Their temperament is the best. They are calm and not very vocal. They are friendly to us humans and other chickens. I would definitely recommend this breed to everyone.

I just wanted to say thanks for my chicks.

I just wanted to let you know that I received my chicks today, and they are healthy active, adorable little darlings. I’m very happy with your service and will be a great repeat customer when I need more chicks.
