Description

Ginger Red Old English Bantam Chicken

Breed History and Origin

The Cackle Hatchery® team is proud to offer the Ginger Red Old English Bantam, a refined miniature version of traditional European game fowl. This variety has been selectively bred for exhibition and was recognized by the American Standard of Perfection in 1982. Old English Bantams have long been valued for their classic game bird appearance and strong show presence. Cackle Hatchery® has been developing its own bloodline or strain of pure Ginger Red Old English Game Bantams since 1982, focusing on maintaining consistent coloration, structure, and overall quality.

Appearance and Breed Characteristics

The Ginger Red Old English Bantam is known for its warm, rich coloring, typically featuring golden-red tones across the body with contrasting darker feathering that enhances its definition. Like other Old English Game Bantams, it carries a proud, upright stance with tight feathering and a well-balanced, athletic frame. As part of the Game Bantam class, it is bred for symmetry, alertness, and clean lines. Mature roosters typically weigh around 24 ounces and hens around 22 ounces, with pullets and cockerels slightly smaller. Their vibrant coloration and refined build make them especially appealing in exhibition settings.

Egg Production and Broodiness

This breed is not developed for egg production and is considered a poor layer. Hens lay small cream or tinted bantam-sized eggs in limited quantities. However, they are known to be setters, meaning hens will go broody and can hatch eggs. Fertility generally ranges from 40–55%, with a recommended mating ratio of approximately nine females to one male.

Temperament and Backyard Suitability

The Ginger Red Old English Bantam is active but generally tame and easy to handle with regular interaction. They are well-suited for backyard flocks, especially for those looking for a small, manageable bird. Their low space and feed requirements make them practical for smaller setups, and they typically get along well with other chickens and people of all ages. A roost height of 3 feet or higher is recommended to match their active nature.

Production Positioning and Exhibition Use

The Ginger Red Old English Bantam is best positioned as an ornamental and exhibition breed. It is not intended for production but is valued for its coloration, posture, and adherence to APA standards. This makes it a strong choice for poultry shows and for hobbyists looking for a visually appealing bantam with reliable show characteristics.

Breeding Note / Color Note

Maintaining the warm ginger-red coloration with proper contrast and feather clarity is important for exhibition-quality birds. Selective breeding should focus on consistent color tones, tight feathering, and correct body type.

I bought three colors of OEGB (Silver Duckwing, Spangled, and Ginger).

The chicks arrived in 2 days. I ordered 16 and received 3 extra (in generous consideration if any didn’t survive), making 19 chicks total. 5 weeks later, only 1 chick died, so I consider this a great survival rate.

Their colors look great and I look forward to seeing their full feathering. So far we seem to have more hens than roosters, so we got lucky.

The chicks have been very friendly and we have really enjoyed them. They run right up to our hands and are obsessed with perching on us—they just jump right up on your arms and shoulders!

The first few weeks, they were very easy to handle and cuddle. 5 weeks later, they are still very friendly but more spirited and want to perch on us rather than be overly handled.

I’m happy with them and would recommend Cackle Hatchery.

I have 4 little ginger red chicks and I can’t wait to see them all grown up. They are the friendliest and most adventurous chicks in my brooder so far, and always the first to try and perch on your shoulder or jump out. Very sweet, confident little birds and I can’t wait to see how they look as adults

Ginger Red Old English game bantams

I’ve loved this variety of Oegb since I was a child. My chicks I ordered from Cackle grew up to be some of the most beautiful Ginger Reds I’ve ever had. Every day I enjoy my beautiful flock of Gingers from Cackle. More people should raise this variety of Old English and discover how rewarding it is to raise them. Thanks Cackle Hatchery for sending me such great chicks and for your superb customer service.

    Good

These are by far the nicest breed of Chickens I’ve had. The roosters don’t get mean like other roosters. They come right up to me. Best breed of chicken 10/10

  6. Dailla

    These are the friendliest birds!

They are pretty, active and smart. A hen flies to me for treats. The roos didn’t get aggressive like other breeds I’ve had. My favorite little ones!
