Description
Splash Laced Red Wyandotte Chicken
Breed Overview and Origin
The Splash Laced Red Wyandotte chicken is a colorful variety of the Wyandotte breed, known for its rounded body shape, calm nature, and attractive red feathers marked with soft splash-colored lacing. These chickens are popular with backyard flock owners who want a practical brown egg layer with ornamental appeal.
Cackle Hatchery® offers Splash Laced Red Wyandotte chicks for sale as part of our brown egg layer and cold-hardy chicken selection. This variety is closely related to the Blue Laced Red Wyandotte and comes from the same general color family, but the splash coloring gives the bird a lighter, softer appearance. Cackle’s product page lists this breed under both Brown Egg Layers and Cold Weather Chickens, which fits the Wyandotte’s reputation as a useful, hardy backyard chicken.
The Wyandotte breed itself is an American dual-purpose chicken valued for both eggs and meat, while the Splash Laced Red variety is especially appreciated for its beauty, calm temperament, and steady brown egg production.
Appearance and Characteristics
Splash Laced Red Wyandottes have a broad, rounded body, full feathering, yellow skin, and a rose comb. The rose comb is one reason many keepers like Wyandottes for colder climates, since smaller combs are generally less prone to frostbite than large single combs.
Their color pattern is what makes them stand out. A Splash Laced Red Wyandotte usually has rich red or chestnut-colored feathers edged or marked with pale blue, gray, white, or splash-colored lacing. Because splash coloring can vary, not every bird will look exactly the same. Some birds may show lighter markings, while others may have more contrast in the feather pattern.
This is a good breed for customers who want chickens that are both useful and attractive in the flock.
Splash Laced Red Wyandotte vs. Blue Laced Red Wyandotte: How to Tell the Difference
Splash Laced Red Wyandottes are commonly confused with Blue Laced Red Wyandottes, and the comparison is worth explaining because the two varieties are closely related. Cackle Hatchery® has a helpful article explaining the difference between Blue Laced Red Wyandottes and Splash Laced Red Wyandottes.
The main difference is feather color. Blue Laced Red Wyandottes usually have stronger blue-gray edging around red feathers. Splash Laced Red Wyandottes usually appear lighter, with paler blue, gray, whitish, or splash-colored markings.
Both varieties are attractive brown egg layers with similar Wyandotte body type and temperament. If you prefer a darker, more defined lacing pattern, you may want Blue Laced Red Wyandottes. If you like a lighter, softer splash pattern, the Splash Laced Red Wyandotte may be the better choice.
Egg Production and Utility
Splash Laced Red Wyandottes are useful brown egg layers. Cackle Hatchery® lists this variety as a brown egg layer, and the page includes breed details for egg color, egg production, temperament, weight, and related flock information.
A practical way to describe production is:
Cackle Hatchery® lists this breed as laying approximately 200 brown eggs per year, though actual production can vary with age, daylight, nutrition, weather, housing, and overall flock management.
As a Wyandotte-type chicken, this variety is also useful as a dual-purpose backyard bird. Many keepers choose Wyandottes because they combine attractive appearance, good body size, cold hardiness, and dependable egg production.
Temperament and Suitability
Splash Laced Red Wyandottes are generally calm, steady, and easy to manage. Their temperament can make them a good fit for backyard flocks, family flocks, small farms, and homesteads. Like all chickens, individual personality can vary depending on handling, flock setup, space, and environment.
They can do well in a backyard setting when provided proper housing, feed, clean water, predator protection, and enough room to move comfortably. Wyandottes are often appreciated by keepers who want a bird that is attractive without being overly flighty.
This breed can be a good choice for beginners who want a brown egg layer with ornamental color, but customers should understand that splash feather patterns vary from bird to bird.

Breed History and Preservation
The Wyandotte is a historic American chicken breed developed as a useful farm bird for eggs and meat. Over time, breeders developed many color varieties, including laced varieties that remain popular with backyard poultry keepers.
The Splash Laced Red Wyandotte comes from the same general color family as the Blue Laced Red Wyandotte. Cackle Hatchery® notes that there is often confusion between the blue laced and splash laced varieties because they are related and can look similar.
Cackle Hatchery® has also offered Blue Laced Red Wyandottes and related hatching eggs, giving customers several ways to work with this attractive Wyandotte color family.
Recognition and Availability
The Wyandotte breed is recognized by the American Poultry Association, but Splash Laced Red is not currently an APA-recognized color variety. This means Splash Laced Red Wyandottes are best described as a colorful production-type or backyard variety rather than a standard exhibition variety.
Cackle Hatchery® offers Splash Laced Red Wyandottes as day-old baby chicks. Availability may vary by hatch date, season, egg numbers, and order timing. Check Cackle Hatchery’s Availability Chart for current hatch and shipping availability.

Ordered and paid for 3 females. All 3 are roosters. What a scam.
Chris Flick –
We ordered 3 splash laced wyandotte hens, we received 4-all 4 grew up to be amazing hens!!! They lay a beautiful egg(pink-ish cream that appears purple with bloom), have amazing feathers, great personalities too(my daughter’s cuddle them everyday)!! What more could you want in a chicken?!?!?!?
They were so unique, with such pretty eggs, one of our neighbors asked to buy one from us(which we were fine with).
Charlie Campbell McKinney –
We added three of these birds to our flock and we love them. They ended up being roosters, however they are my favorite in the flock at the moment. They are very friendly and like to be held. They are big beautiful birds.
Heather wyman –
My kids raise chickens for the fair. We ordered several splash red laced Wyandottes they are slow to mature but once mature they are heavy bodied birds and did excellent at the local fair. Both hens we took received a blue ribbon.
Would recommend if you like large breed birds

I love these chickens. They have quickly become one of my most loved Wyandottes. Super friendly personalities! And the pictures dont do them justice. They have beautiful soft blue gray feathers mixed in with the white lacing. They are absolutely stunning!
David Berrier –
Not the best looking birds. I prefer the darker variety, much prettier. Also, these girls don’t start laying until 28 weeks.
Amanda Gardner –
I recieved my Splash Laced Wyadottes in April, they have been an absolute wonderful addition to my flock. They are very docile and each has different coloring making them unique. They have started laying and are producing a beautiful brown egg and for being new layers the eggs are a medium size. Hoping to order more next year.

I bought my first Splash Red Laced Wyandottes from the Cackle Chick Truck in Washington a couple of years ago, I had no idea then how beautiful they are! I ordered more from our local feed stores chick days (from Cackle) this past spring and sadly they didn’t arrive. I watched and watched and when they became available, I ordered some for this fall and absolutely love them. They are feathering out beautifully and I can finally start a breeding pen of this in 2026. We have a lot of breeds, but this are in my top 3 that I love. thanks for the amazing birds!
Greg Gallman –
Very beautiful birds. I purchased four female chicks. All arrived healthy, and the pullets have grown to be stunning additions to my flock. Three are red splash, while the fourth appears to have some red-blue lacing. Their temperament is very docile. I introduced some younger chicks of several other breeds, and the splash Wyandottes get along with them very well even though the Wyandottes are significantly larger. Unlike some other reviewers, I would not describe my Wyandottes as overly affectionate. They were handled regularly as young chicks, and they tolerate being touched, but are not overly fond of being held. (If you want a lap chicken, buy a Buff Orpington.) They are friendly birds, and will hang very close when I’m in the coop area. I also have gold-laced Wyandottes and they are even more averse to being touched. Overall, these are beautiful birds, they’ll get along well with others and will add a nice “splash” of color to your flock.

Beautiful birds, very sweet very pleasant feather color. It appears that all anre hens and I got three extra.
Kenneth Dickerson –
Absolutely beautiful birds. Only thing I didn’t like was I ordered 24 pullets and 3 roosters. I got 60 straight run 54 of which were roosters. Yes I got more than I ordered but. I would have at least liked a call or email to ask if that was okay. Definitely didn’t need that many roosters.

I am normally not an impulse-buyer, but am so glad that we bought two Splash-Laced Red Wyandottes while picking up our order. Both are beautiful, sweet, and very healthy girls. They are still a little young to lay eggs, but they are both built well for egg-laying and are busily inspecting the nestboxes. They are both good with our other hens, which is nice since we keep a mixed flock. Both girls like to hop up on our backs and our laps, and they sound like they’re purring when we pet them. Next time we are asked advice on breeds, we’ll definitely include these gentle girls in our list of recommendations.

great service…..but
I ordered 5 ea of the Splash Laced Red Wyandottes pullets, 5 ea Colombian White Wyandottes pullets and 15 ea Rainbow assortment pullets. The chicks hatched April 13 2020 and I received them April 15th. I was delighted when all survived the trip and were absolutely healthy and strong. I was pleasantly surprised when I realized that the hatchery had generously added 5 extra babies in to bunch. I do realize the the sexing can be difficult but out of the 5 Splash Laced chicks I ordered 3 of them are roosters. I did not order a straight run. I did not get any other Splash Laced in the 15 assortment or the added 5 chicks the hatchery sent. On top of that, I also got 1 Rhode island Red rooster. Not super happy with 3 of the 5 Wyandottes being roosters. All of that being said, the birds are beautiful! The assortment of colors and attitudes of the bird are just great! The Splash Laced feather colors and patterns are truly remarkable. Can’t wait until the all start laying.

Stunning, healthy birds
I ordered 3 pullets, and 4 survived the journey 😉 1 was a runt that was clearly smaller and less developed than the others, and even she has grown into a beautiful, healthy, friendly bird.
Jackie –
I think there a great breed to have
I did order I believe in the batch just BLRWD and which I did get a rooster but I was only suppose to 1 rooster and get hens of BLRWD. Not sure if they didn’t hatch right or what happened but I got sent the splash. There very docile and beautiful. It was the first week of August maybe 2nd when I got them. And they are thriving. 5months old now. Still waiting to lay to see how egg production is. But so far I think there a great backyard chicken. My rooster isn’t mean or aggressive that I’ve seen so far.
Farmer Joe –
Beautiful
Docile, gentle, pretty birds. Bought three girls in Spring of 2019 and have not had any of them lay yet.

very good work
the prices are competetive

Great homestead birds
These layers are fabulous – sweet disposition, hearty, laid right on time every time. Easy keepers.
Karen –
Great choice
These girls are such a beautiful addition to my flock! Very happy with them. They are friendly calm hens. The eggs are a nice size and very rich yolks! Love these girls.
SOD Kennels –
Splashed laced and beautiful!
I ordered 15 fancy birds of all types. I bought 3 of the red splashed laced wyandottes and they are beyond beautiful! These girls will be a great addition to any flock whether large or small. They are quite friendly and docile. Thanks Cackle Hatchery for such a lovely assortment of birds!
Hippie chick –
Large chickens
The lace Wyandotte’s are very nice size chicken. They haven’t started laying as of yet but hope they’ll start soon.
mj –
lovely calm hens
So pretty and are a calming influence for my flock of cinnamon queens. They love to forage and free-range, so they fly out of their fenced run while the cinnamon queens are content to stay inside. Lays large brown eggs but the cinnamon queens are quicker to lay and are more productive egg layers.
PS –
Great birds
So I ordered a large array of Wyandotte’s so I could get all the color varieties. I have to say that the splash laced pullets I got are some of my favorites in the flock they are beautiful and smart. Can’t wait till hatching season next spring!

Very pleased
The splashed laces red Wyandotte where absolutely beautiful, they made a great addition to our backyard pets. Hope to purchase more in the future.
New Chicks –
Paid for females and received 2 males
I’m disappointed as I paid for females and out of the 3 chicks I paid for, 2 were roosters.
No Nickname –
Very pleasant chickens, I love the plumage!
Beautiful birds and the hens are great layers!

Beautiful & friendly
I ordered 4 of the Splash laced Wyandotte and 3 survived the journey. I did end up with a rooster as they didn’t have sexed birds at the time of delivery. The rooster is quite beautiful and pretty friendly but too noisy to keep in my neighborhood. They seem to be pretty hardy birds and are a beautiful addition to my flock.
cehesso –
Lovely hens
I ordered some of these beauties along witha few Black Americaunas, and I love them! All three are ever so slightly differing in color, with one having a much white collar than the other two, making it easier to tell the individuals apart. They are very sweet, and with training, they come when I call them in. Whenever I let them out of their enclosure, they love letting their energy out in bursts of short flight. That being said, they are sneaky and mischievous, and have snuck out of a 1’x1′ space 6-8′ up that I hadn’t fenced over.
Overall, their coloring is ethereal and they are sweet birds, definitely not top of the pecking order to my two older birds, a Buff Orpington and a Plymouth Rock. Looks like it takes them about 6 months before they’ll lay eggs as well. I got mine end of May, and they haven’t started yet at the beginning of November. Highly recommend!

Beautiful Birds!
I ordered 10 to add some beauty and elegance to my flock of naked neck turkens. These birds were bold and beautiful right out of the box. They have thrived under our pasture-based management system and are gorgeous. Amazing feather pattern and coloring along with excellent foraging and production.

Friendly and calm
We ordered some of these in spring 2019 to help get up to the correct number of chicks for our shipment. We ordered straight run and received a 50:50 ratio of cockerels to pullets. They have been good layers and are really gentle with my children. One of our pullets even decided to go broody!

Splash Laced Nice Birds
I received several Splash Laced Wyandotte hens as replacement birds for my original order of a few of the Blue Laced Wyandottes that didn’t survive the very long trip. These are really pretty and unusual looking birds…which was my goal with all the birds I had purchased. I wanted a flock of “different” patterned and colored hens. They seem quite hardy, very friendly and curious. Really love the color and greatly appreciate the suggestion for these from the Hatchery staff. I love having friendly and curious birds!
PoultryLover58 –
Not What I Expected
The four birds that I received were not at all what I expected. I really don’t think they are what they are suppose to be but there was no substitution listed for them. They look more like barnvelders or a Cornish cross. They are pretty birds but are definitely not what the picture showed.
