Description
Barred Cochin Standard Chicken
Breed Overview and Origin
The Barred Cochin Standard Chicken is a large, docile, feather-legged chicken with striking barred plumage and strong ornamental appeal. If you want a rare standard-size Cochin that is gentle, impressive, and excellent for family farms or exhibition, this variety is a great choice.
Cochins were first introduced to America in the 1800s and quickly became famous for their large size, soft feathering, feathered legs, and gentle temperament. The Barred Cochin Standard carries those classic Cochin traits in a hard-to-find barred color pattern.
Cackle Hatchery® offers Barred Cochin Standard Chickens as baby chicks. Cackle’s listing notes that the Barred Cochin Standard was recognized by the American Standard of Perfection in 1982 and that Cackle has developed pure color varieties of standard-size Cochin chickens since 1975.
Appearance and Characteristics
Barred Cochin Standard chickens have a large body, soft feathering, feathered legs, and black-and-white barred plumage. Their full feathering gives them a fluffy, rounded look, while their barred pattern adds a classic farm-style appearance.
This is a very large chicken with plenty of presence in the flock. Their size, feathered legs, and rare color make them especially appealing for customers who want something different from common backyard breeds.
Because Barred Cochin Standards have feathered legs and feet, they need clean, dry housing. Mud, wet bedding, and snow can collect in the foot feathers, so a covered run, dry litter, and regular foot checks can help keep them comfortable.
Rare Barred Cochin Color
The Barred Cochin Standard is a hard color variety to find in the standard-size Cochin. There are very few breeders in the United States working with this color, which makes it a special choice for customers who appreciate rare poultry.
Cackle Hatchery® further improved its Barred Cochin flock by adding Roland Doerr bloodline in 2009. That detail is important because it shows Cackle’s effort to maintain size, vigor, and quality in this rare color variety.
Customers who want a rare feather-legged chicken for the family farm, backyard flock, or show pen should give the Barred Cochin Standard serious consideration.
Barred Cochin Standard vs Barred Cochin Bantam
Barred Cochin Standard chickens and Barred Cochin Bantam Chickens share the same barred color pattern, feathered legs, and gentle Cochin personality. The main difference is size.
Choose Barred Cochin Standard Chickens if you want a large, impressive chicken with strong farmyard presence and exhibition appeal. Choose Barred Cochin Bantams if you want the same fluffy feather-legged look in a smaller bird that takes up less space. Cackle’s Barred Cochin Bantam listing describes them as fluffy, feather-legged bantams that are gentle, kid-friendly, broody, and great for pets.
Both versions can be wonderful for customers who love Cochins. The standard size offers more body size and visual impact, while the bantam version is easier to fit into smaller coops and bantam flocks.
Barred Cochin Standard vs Other Standard Cochins
Barred Cochin Standards share the same large body, docile temperament, and feathered feet found in other standard Cochin varieties. The main difference is feather color.
Choose Barred Cochin Standard Chickens if you want black-and-white barred plumage in a rare standard-size Cochin. Choose Blue, Splash, Buff, Black, Partridge, Golden Laced, Silver Laced, or White Cochin Standards if you prefer a different color pattern.
Cackle offers several standard Cochin varieties, including Blue Cochin Standard Chickens, Splash Cochin Standard Chickens, Buff Cochin Standard Chickens, and White Cochin Standard Chickens.
Egg Production and Utility
Barred Cochin Standard hens may lay brown eggs, but they are not heavy production layers. Most customers choose them for their docile nature, rare color, large size, broodiness, family-friendly temperament, and show or exhibition value.
Cochin hens are known for going broody and raising chicks. That makes this breed useful for customers who enjoy natural hatching or want a hen that may help mother chicks.
If your main goal is maximum egg production, choose a production layer. However, if you want a large, gentle, rare, feather-legged chicken with ornamental and exhibition appeal, the Barred Cochin Standard is an excellent option.
Temperament and Suitability
Barred Cochin Standard chickens are docile and gentle. They are especially appealing for family farms because they are known for being good around children.
Their calm nature makes them easier to enjoy than many more active breeds. They can work well for backyard flocks, farm settings, ornamental coops, and customers who want a large chicken with a friendly personality.
Because they are large and heavily feathered, they need enough room to move comfortably. They also need predator protection, balanced feed, clean water, and dry bedding to keep their feathered feet in good condition.
Feathered Feet Care
Feathered legs and feet are one of the most recognizable Cochin traits. They add beauty, but they also require practical care.
Keep bedding dry, avoid muddy runs when possible, and check the feet during wet or snowy weather. Packed mud, ice, or debris can collect in the feathers. Low roosts can also help large Cochins get on and off the perch safely.
For general chick and flock care, Cackle’s Chicken Care Instructions page is a helpful internal resource for customers raising baby chicks.
Show and Exhibition Value
The Barred Cochin Standard can make a great show and exhibition type chicken. Its large size, fluffy feathering, feathered legs, and rare barred color pattern help it stand out in the show pen.
Cackle’s listing places Barred Cochin Standard Chickens in the rare chicken breed category and notes APA recognition. The page also identifies the breed as a sustainable heritage chicken breed with Watch status through The Livestock Conservancy.
Customers interested in exhibition should focus on overall condition, feather quality, body shape, leg feathering, color pattern, and health. Clean housing and careful handling help large feather-legged birds look their best.

Customers who like standard-size Cochins and are flexible on color may also want to compare Cackle’s Standard Cochin Surplus Chicken Special. This is a straight-run hatchery choice option and may be a good fit for customers who want standard Cochins without needing one exact color variety.

Breed History and Preservation
Cochins were introduced to America in the 1800s and helped shape the early poultry fancy movement. Their large bodies, abundant feathering, and feathered legs made them stand out from many other chickens of the time.

Crazy Chicken Girl –
I got 3 females back in August and all arrived happy and healthy (along with 4 Silver Spangled Hamburgs, 3 Black Sumatras, 3 Rhode Island Whites, 8 Easter Eggers, and 3 Brown Leghorns). Almost 3 months in and all are alive and thriving. One of the females is a bit smaller than the other two but she’s ok. Can’t wait for them to hatch chicks for me, to lay eggs, and to show them! Thanks, Cackle!

I purchased 20 Barred Cochin Standard chicks from Cackle Hatchery about 6 months ago, and I couldn’t be happier! Every single bird has grown into a large, beautiful, healthy fowl with the sweetest temperaments. These are by far the nicest and most well-mannered chickens.
The quality from Cackle Hatchery truly shows — strong, vibrant chicks from day one, and now absolutely stunning adults. I’m so impressed with the consistency, health, and calm nature of this flock. Thank you, Cackle Hatchery, for providing such top-quality birds and excellent service. I’ll definitely be a returning customer!

Absolutely love my Barred Standard Cochins! I ordered 15 chicks in May, when they came I received 2 extras. They are now 9 weeks old and out of the 17 chicks I received, only ONE chick didn’t make it and that was only because it failed to thrive like the rest. They’re all healthy and beautiful! I also ordered them straight run, and really got lucky because so far it’s looking like I only have 1 rooster! These are also the friendliest breed of chickens I have ever owned! Super pleased! 😊

Genuinely the most lovely chickens! Largefowl Barred Cochins from Cackles are outstanding in their docile nature, massive size, are great layers, and literally PERFECT for families with small children who want to hold them. All 3 girls layed through a literal polar vortex without any issues and didn’t succumb to any diseases, nor have issues in my dynamic cold and hot humid summer climate (just had a shady run and water like usual). I added some photos of them at various ages for reference. They are a permanent variety in my flock now, I’m extremely pleased and hope to see them go broody in the years to come. I ordered 3 straight run chicks in May 2024 and ended up with three gorgeous hens. I plan to purchase a rooster and more of this glorious Cochins! They’re here for the pets, the treats, the petting, I’m now here for any large fowl Cochin from here! Also pictured, my Cackles Blue Sumatra Pepe! Absolutely wonderful flock, rearing and excellent experience. Thank you, Cackle Hatchery!

I absolutely am in love with Cochins. I’ve had both sizes bantam and now the large. I ordered Barred Cochins, Silver lace and Gold lace Cochins. This April 15th Everyone arrived happy and healthy in 2 days. Cochins are absolutely beautiful wonderful, sweet, friendly and absolutely so fun to watch. My girls are still too Young, but I know this breed makes exceptional mothers. I received a free rooster which I’m so thankful for he’s wonderful and sweet and his name is Lovey. These guys certainly do like to eat, but I let mine free range most of the day to help out.

Ordered 3 Barred Cochin females (+ extras) and only one turned out to be female. We were so disappointed not to receive more hens, we ordered 10 (!) more (+ extras), and the 2nd time around we had even worse luck – only one hen again! So in total, 13+ chicks and only 2 were actually female. The two we have are adorable, round fluffy treasures that we LOVE, but I’d be really hesitant to order again, unfortunately.

Ordered 3 chicks, received 4. Of the three cochin varieties we ordered (Barred, Blue and Partridge) the Barred by far has the most personality. Very comfortable around us and our dogs at only one month old. Curious and active. Coming from a background in poultry breeding I’m VERY impressed with the body structure/head structure of these chicks. These are strong, healthy young birds.

Great Birds
Great, beautiful, and wonderful mothers. My hen was only about 7 months old and she became broody and hatched out 7 chicks. They are great hens and let’s not forget the roosters! He is very protective of his hens but at the same time, he is very nice and gentle and likes to be held by humans. Great bred for first time chicken owners or if you live in cold areas like colorado

Cust Response
Just wanted to say that the Standard Golden Laced Cochins and the Standard Barred Cochins I ordered and received back in April are looking just beautiful! Very beautiful chickens, with great feathering! I am pleased with both breeds, and am especially excited about the standard sized Barred Cochins because it was only when I saw them on your list of cochins did I realize that the Barred even existed in the standard size! Thank you again, I would and do recommended your hatchery to my friends and acquaintances.
