Black Breasted Red Old English Bantam Chicken

Breed History and Origin

At Cackle Hatchery®, we proudly offer the Black Breasted Red Old English Bantam, one of several varieties of Old English Bantams that we have years of experience breeding. This miniature version of the Old English Game chicken traces its origins back to Europe and represents one of the oldest game bantam types. The breed was recognized by the American Standard of Perfection in 1925 within the Game Bantam class. Cackle Hatchery® Poultry Breeding Farm has been developing its bloodline of pure Black Breasted Red Old English Game Bantams since 1993.

Appearance and Breed Characteristics

Black Breasted Red Old English Bantam chickens are admired for their striking red and black feathering and upright, confident posture. They have the classic game bird appearance with a compact body, alert stance, and refined features. Mature hens typically weigh about 22 ounces, while roosters average around 24 ounces. Pullets generally weigh about 20 ounces, and cockerels about 22 ounces. Their traditional coloring and structure make them a popular choice for exhibition poultry enthusiasts.

Egg Production and Performance

Black Breasted Red Old English Bantam hens lay small cream or lightly tinted bantam-sized eggs, and egg production is considered poor compared to production breeds. This variety is primarily valued for ornamental and exhibition purposes rather than egg production.

Temperament and Flock Suitability

This breed is known for being active and alert, with a more spirited nature typical of game bantams. While manageable, they are best suited for poultry keepers familiar with active breeds. Fertility percentages generally range between 40–55%, with a recommended mating ratio of nine females to one male. Hens are considered setters and may go broody. They typically prefer roost heights of three feet or higher.

Exhibition and Breed Use

The Black Breasted Red Old English Bantam is primarily an ornamental and exhibition breed, prized for its traditional game bird appearance and vibrant coloration. They can also be kept as pets by experienced poultry keepers who appreciate their active personality.

Love them! They are actually my husbands bantams lol they are super sweet and very tiny. Received them in May. They are now 6 months. They are doing great. Only 1 female. But the roosters are gorgeous. They sound like a squeaky toy when they crow lol I definitely recommend them and Hackle Hatchery. Ordered lots from them and I’m always very pleased!

A definite must have! Smaller eggs, but the best personality of any bird. Every night when I get home, I yell for “my birdies” and they literally fly to me an on me. We have two hens that stay broody, will let them hatch some next spring.
