Breed Profile
French Cuckoo Marans Chicken
Breed Overview and Origin
The French Wheaten Marans Chicken is a beautiful dark brown egg layer known for wheaten-colored plumage, feathered shanks, amber eyes, friendly temperament, and rich mahogany-brown eggs. If you want a productive backyard chicken with elegant farmyard looks and gourmet-style eggs, French Wheaten Marans can make a wonderful addition to your flock.
Marans originated in France near the port town of Marans. Cackle Hatchery’s article English Marans or French Marans Chicken? explains that French Marans have sparsely feathered legs, while English Marans are typically clean-legged because British breeders selected for featherless shanks. That feathered-shank trait is one of the main details that separates French Marans from English Marans.
The Wheaten variety earned American Poultry Association recognition in October 2011 at the Crossroads Show in Indianapolis, Indiana, according to the original Cackle Hatchery® description. Cackle Hatchery® lists French Wheaten Marans in the Dark Brown Egg Layers for Sale category and notes that its French Wheaten Marans bloodline has been developed since 2015.
Because French Wheaten Marans are friendly, sociable, active, and useful for dark egg production, they work well for customers who want a practical layer with rare-breed charm.
Appearance and Characteristics
French Wheaten Marans have light wheaten-colored feathers, feathered shanks, amber eyes, and attractive farmyard presence. The back color is fairly consistent, while breast and rear coloring may range from almost white to deeper red-clay shades.
Roosters can be calm compared with many breeds, and the original Cackle Hatchery® description notes that they may cohabitate nicely with one another. Even so, flock behavior can vary by individual bird, space, season, and male-to-female ratio.
The French type should show feathering on the shanks. However, Cackle’s original description notes that its 2015 flocks produced about 5% clean-legged birds. Therefore, customers should understand that a small percentage may not show the expected feathered-shank trait.
Egg Color and Production
French Wheaten Marans are bred for dark brown eggs. Customers often describe Marans eggs as chocolate-colored or gourmet-style eggs because of their rich shell color. Cackle Hatchery’s French Wheaten Marans Hatching Eggs page describes the hens as friendly, sociable, active birds that lay dark chocolate-colored eggs.
Cackle’s original description notes that French Wheaten Marans eggs should have a consistently deep red-brown shell, with a minimum of 3 on the Marans egg color chart. Cackle also notes that its flock lays shell colors around 5 to 8 on the French Marans egg color chart shown in the product gallery.
However, egg color can change during the laying cycle. As with many dark brown egg layers, shell color often starts darker and then lightens as the season progresses. In addition, French Wheaten Marans eggs are generally not as dark as eggs from French Black Copper Marans chickens, which are especially known for rich dark brown eggs.
Marans eggs are also a nice size. The original Cackle Hatchery® description notes that pullet eggs may weigh around 2.3 ounces, while mature hen eggs may reach about 2.8 ounces.
French Marans vs English Marans: What’s the Difference?
The biggest difference between French Marans and English Marans is leg feathering.
French Marans have sparsely feathered shanks. English Marans are typically clean-legged because British poultry breeders selected for featherless legs after importing Marans from France. Cackle Hatchery’s English Marans or French Marans Chicken? article explains that this remains the main difference between the two types.
Choose French Wheaten Marans if you want a French-style Marans with feathered shanks, wheaten plumage, amber eyes, and dark mahogany-brown egg potential.
Choose an English-style or clean-legged Marans option only if featherless shanks are part of your preference or breeding goal.
French Wheaten Marans vs Other Dark Brown Egg Layers
French Wheaten Marans are a strong choice for customers who want dark brown eggs, friendly temperament, and a beautiful wheaten-colored bird. However, Cackle Hatchery® offers several other dark brown egg layer options worth comparing.

If you want the darkest Marans egg potential, compare French Black Copper Marans chickens. Cackle describes French Black Copper Marans as rare, docile French chickens known for rich dark brown eggs and striking plumage.
For customers who prefer cuckoo coloring, French Cuckoo Marans chickens may be a better fit. Cackle describes French Cuckoo Marans as a rare U.S. chicken breed known for deep chocolate-brown eggs.
If you want a budget-friendly dark brown egg assortment, compare the Dark Brown Egg Pullet Surplus Special. Cackle notes that French Marans can be harder to vent sex, with a 75% sexing guarantee for that breed.

Temperament and Suitability
French Wheaten Marans are friendly, sociable, and active. They bring a nice balance of beauty, usefulness, and backyard personality. Because of that, they can work well for families, homesteads, small farms, and customers who want a dark brown egg layer with a little extra elegance.
This variety can work well for:
- Backyard egg flocks
- Dark brown egg baskets
- Homesteads and small farms
- Customers who want French-style feathered-shank Marans
- Poultry keepers who like friendly, active birds
- Flocks focused on gourmet-style egg color
- Customers comparing rare or specialty laying breeds
However, customers who need guaranteed ultra-dark egg color from every hen may prefer French Black Copper Marans. Also, customers who need high sexing accuracy should review the French Marans sexing note before ordering.
Overall, French Wheaten Marans fit best with customers who want friendly dark brown egg layers with attractive wheaten coloring and classic French Marans character.
Important Sexing Note
Cackle Hatchery® notes that most breeds average about 90% accuracy for gender sexing. However, French Marans are more difficult for vent sexors to identify. Therefore, Cackle’s sexing guarantee for French Marans is 75% accuracy.
This matters if you order females and cannot keep roosters. Customers with city ordinances, neighborhood rules, or strict flock ratio needs should take this lower sexing accuracy into account before checkout.
Because sexing accuracy is lower for French Marans, customers should plan ahead in case a chick sold as female turns out to be male.
Hatching Egg Option
Cackle Hatchery® also offers French Wheaten Marans Fertile Hatching Eggs during limited times of the year. That option can be a good fit for customers who enjoy incubating eggs or using a broody hen to hatch chicks.
Cackle’s French Wheaten Marans Hatching Eggs page notes that the hatching eggs ship seasonally from mid-February through June 6 and are sold in 12-packs only. It also recommends placing eggs in an incubator as soon as they arrive for best hatching results.
Choose chicks if you want already-hatched birds. Choose hatching eggs if you want the experience of incubating and hatching your own French Wheaten Marans.

Care and Housing Tips
French Wheaten Marans need the same dependable care as other standard-size laying chickens. They do best with a clean coop, secure run, proper feed, fresh water, and predator protection.
For best results, provide:
- A dry, well-ventilated coop
- Clean bedding
- Predator-resistant fencing
- Fresh water at all times
- A balanced chick starter and layer feed at the right ages
- Enough roosting space
- Nest boxes when pullets near laying age
- Shade and ventilation during hot weather
- Protection from drafts and damp bedding in cold weather
Because French Marans have feathered shanks, customers should keep bedding and runs as dry as possible. Muddy conditions can soil or damage leg feathering, especially during wet seasons.
Also, remember that dark egg color may lighten as the laying season progresses. This is normal and does not mean the hen is no longer a Marans.
