Description

Partridge Cochin Bantam Chicken

Breed History and Origin

The team at Cackle Hatchery® strives to offer a wide range of chicken breeds, including several Cochin Bantam varieties such as the Partridge Cochin Bantam. Cochins originated in Asia and became widely popular in the United States during the 1800s due to their size, feathering, and gentle temperament. The bantam version carries these same traits in a smaller form and has been recognized by the American Standard of Perfection since 1874. Cackle Hatchery® has been developing its own bloodline or strain of pure Cochin Bantams since 1971, focusing on feather quality, consistency, and temperament.

Appearance and Breed Characteristics

The Partridge Cochin Bantam is known for its intricate feather pattern, which typically includes rich brown tones with black penciling that creates a layered, detailed look across the body. This pattern extends throughout the bird, including the heavily feathered legs and feet, giving it a full, uniform appearance. Like all Cochins, it has a soft, rounded shape due to its abundant plumage, making it appear larger than its actual size. Mature roosters typically weigh around 30 ounces and hens around 26 ounces, with pullets and cockerels slightly smaller. As part of the Feather Legged Bantam class, feather quality and pattern clarity are key features.

Egg Production and Broodiness

The Partridge Cochin Bantam offers fair egg production for a bantam, laying small brown eggs on a consistent but moderate basis. This breed is especially valued for its strong broodiness. Hens are reliable setters and are often used to hatch eggs, making them an excellent choice for keepers needing a dependable broody hen. Fertility typically ranges from 40–55%, with a recommended mating ratio of approximately six females to one male.

Temperament and Backyard Suitability

This breed is extremely docile and easy to handle, making it one of the best options for families, beginners, and backyard keepers. They are calm birds that do well in mixed flocks with other gentle breeds. Their small size and low feed requirements make them efficient to keep, and their friendly nature makes them ideal pets. Due to their heavy feathering and structure, they prefer lower roosts, typically between 0 to 2 feet, and benefit from clean, dry conditions to maintain feather quality.

Production Positioning and Exhibition Use

The Partridge Cochin Bantam is best positioned as a pet, broody hen, and ornamental breed with light egg production. While they do produce eggs, their primary value lies in their temperament, broodiness, and detailed feather pattern. They are also a strong exhibition bird, particularly when the penciling pattern is clean and well-defined.

Breeding Note / Color Note

Partridge coloration requires careful breeding to maintain consistent penciling and even distribution of color across the body. Selection should focus on feather detail, pattern clarity, and maintaining the dense feathering typical of Cochin Bantams.

We ordered the cochin bantams for my children’s 4H project this past year, and we absolutely love them! They are so entertaining and their fluffy butts are adorable! Highly recommend this breed if you’re in it for the hobby!

    fluffy butts

I ordered cochin chicks this year and could not be happier. Because there are too many to name I just call them the fluffy but gang. The partridge roosters are the eye candy of the flock. Great breeding. All your chicks have better size and color than what I ordered from other hatcheries. You have a new fan.

    Thank You

A huge thanks for my bantam chickens. All 25 plus the extras sent arrived doing well, and here we are three weeks later and all chicks are still going strong. I have purchased chickens from two or three different local places before and lost some here and there, so I am very impressed with how they all are doing. I will definitely recommend your hatchery to my poultry friends, and plan to order from you again when we’re ready for more

    Thanks Guys! Excellent Order

100% live arrival when I picked up this morning at Post Office. It’s been many years since I ordered from you , from the looks of today’s chicks that won’t happen again. Excellent chicks, strong solid bodies, vitality and good crest on. One jumped into the brooder to drink before I even had a second to dip its beak. Never have I had that before even in ones I hatch.
