Description
White Cochin Standard Chicken
Breed History and Origin
We offer the beautiful White Cochin Standard breed of chicks and they will make a great addition to your property. Originating from Asia and introduced to America in the 1800s, Cochins became widely known for their large size, feathering, and calm temperament. The White variety is one of the classic color types within the breed. Cackle Hatchery® Poultry Breeding Farm has been developing its bloodline or strain of standard size Cochin chickens since 1975.
Appearance and Breed Characteristics
The White Cochin Standard is a large, feather legged bird with soft, fluffy feathering and a clean, bright white appearance. Like all Cochins, it has a rounded body and heavily feathered legs and feet, giving it a full and impressive look. Mature hens typically weigh around 8½ pounds, while roosters average about 11 pounds, with pullets around 7 pounds and cockerels about 9 pounds.
Egg Production and Broodiness
They will lay small to medium sized brown eggs, producing approximately 110 to 160 eggs per year depending on care and environment. While not a high-production layer, the White Cochin Standard is well known for broodiness and is an excellent choice for raising chicks.
Temperament and Backyard Suitability
This breed has a docile and gentle temperament, making it a great choice for backyard flocks, families, and those looking for a calm pet chicken. Their easygoing nature allows them to behave well around children. Like other Cochins, they do best with low roost heights of 0 to 2 feet and clean, dry conditions to maintain feather quality. Fertility percentages generally range between 40 to 55 percent, with a recommended mating ratio of 6 females to 1 male.
Production Positioning and Exhibition Use
This is an ornamental and meat-type exhibition bird rather than a true production breed. The White Cochin Standard is best suited for backyard enjoyment, broody hen use, and exhibition value rather than maximum egg output.

Chickenlover16 –
Got a couple of white roosters in my cochin surplus order from May 2020. Kept one for my cochin hens, and he is just the sweetest, calmest rooster around. He’s big, fluffy, and hardly ever crows. He’s such a gentleman to his hens. Been very healthy from day one.
Christy –
Nice chickens
These were really nice chickens. We ordered 5 and lost 1. They were not sexed so we have 2 roosters and 2 pullets. They are docile easy to handle birds.
