Description
Porcelain d’Uccle Bantam Chicken
Breed Overview and Origin
The Porcelain d’Uccle Bantam chicken is a true bantam with feathered legs, muffs, a full beard, and soft porcelain coloring. If you want a small, gorgeous show bird with plenty of charm, this Belgian bantam is a beautiful choice.
The d’Uccle, also called the Belgian Bearded d’Uccle or Barbu d’Uccle, originated in Uccle, Belgium, near Brussels. The American Poultry Association notes that breeders developed the Belgian d’Uccle by crossing Booted Bantams with Belgian d’Anvers bantams, creating a short, broad, cobby, stately-looking breed.
The Mille Fleur variety entered the American Poultry Association Standard of Perfection in 1914, while the Porcelain variety followed later in 1965. Today, the Porcelain d’Uccle remains a favorite for customers who want a true bantam that is both ornamental and friendly.
Appearance and Characteristics
Porcelain d’Uccle Bantams have a delicate, pale color pattern that gives them a soft, frosted look. The Porcelain variety is closely related to Mille Fleur, but the base color is lighter and cooler. McMurray Hatchery describes Porcelain d’Uccles as having the same general characteristics as Mille Fleur, except the base color is pale blue instead of red, with feathers tipped in white.
These bantams are easy to recognize because of their feathered legs, muffs, and full beards. Their small size, full facial feathering, and fluffy feathered feet give them a charming, almost storybook appearance.
Because they are true bantams, they do not have a standard-size version. The small size is part of the breed, not a miniature form of a larger chicken.
Porcelain d’Uccle vs Mille Fleur d’Uccle
Porcelain d’Uccles and Mille Fleur d’Uccles belong to the same breed family, but their coloring is different.
Choose Porcelain d’Uccles if you want a softer, pale blue, cream, and white look. Choose Mille Fleur d’Uccle Bantams if you prefer the warmer red, gold, black, and white speckled pattern.
Both varieties have feathered legs, muffs, full beards, and true bantam size. In addition, both make excellent ornamental birds, show projects, and backyard pets. Your choice mostly comes down to color preference and availability.
True Bantam vs Miniature Bantam
The Porcelain d’Uccle is a true bantam. That means it has no large-fowl counterpart.
This makes d’Uccles different from bantams such as Cochin Bantams, Brahma Bantams, or Plymouth Rock Bantams, which are miniature versions of standard-size breeds. With d’Uccles, the bantam is the breed.
Because they stay small, they can work well in smaller coops and backyard setups. However, they still need secure housing, clean water, balanced feed, dry bedding, and predator protection.
Egg Production and Utility
Porcelain d’Uccle Bantams may lay small cream or tinted bantam eggs, but they are not heavy production layers. Most customers choose them for beauty, personality, show appeal, and ornamental value.
Backyard Chicken Coach estimates that Porcelain d’Uccle Bantams may produce about 100–150 eggs per year, though production varies by bloodline, lighting, management, and individual hen. Since these are small bantams, the eggs will also be small.
If your main goal is a large egg basket, choose a standard-size laying breed. However, if you want a gorgeous little bird that brings charm, color, and show value to the flock, the Porcelain d’Uccle is a strong fit.
Temperament and Suitability
Porcelain d’Uccle Bantams are often chosen as pets because they are small, charming, and generally easy to enjoy. Their feathered faces and gentle look make them especially popular with people who want ornamental backyard chickens.
They can be a good choice for families, hobby flocks, exhibition projects, and customers who enjoy true bantams. Because they are small, they need protection from larger, pushier flockmates and predators.
Their feathered feet also need attention. Mud, wet bedding, and snow can collect in the foot feathers, so a dry coop and well-drained run matter. In addition, their muffs and beard can get damp around waterers, so clean water setups and regular checks help keep them comfortable.
Feathered Feet, Muffs, and Beard Care
The Porcelain d’Uccle’s feathered legs, muffs, and full beard are part of its charm. Still, those beautiful features need simple, practical care.
Keep bedding dry, avoid muddy runs when possible, and check the feet during wet weather. If feathers around the face become dirty or wet, clean waterers and good coop conditions can help.
In winter, a dry coop is especially important. Small bantams can lose body heat more quickly than larger birds, and feathered feet can become uncomfortable if they stay wet.

Breed History and Preservation
The d’Uccle breed developed in Belgium around the late 1800s and early 1900s. The Livestock Conservancy explains that Michael Van Gelder of Uccle, Belgium, played an important role in developing the Barbu d’Uccle and likely used breeding stock from English and German poultry shows.
The breed became popular in Europe because of its beautiful feathering, compact shape, and ornamental value. In the United States, the Mille Fleur variety entered the APA Standard of Perfection in 1914, while Porcelain was added in 1965.
Today, Porcelain d’Uccles remain popular with bantam keepers, exhibition poultry enthusiasts, and backyard hobbyists who appreciate rare-looking, feather-footed birds.

The D’uccles are one of my favorite bantam breeds. They are extremely friendly and pretty healthy and hearty. They make it through winters nicely. All my chicks were healthy and happy when I got them. The roosters have that brown highlight feathers now that they are fully grown. They also have the cutest crow, especially when they are young.

I am obsessed with my Porcelain d’Uccles! They’re tiny, fluffy, bougie little chickens with big personalities. They walk around like they’re wearing fancy feathered pants, and they’re surprisingly sweet and cuddly. They lay cute little eggs and love being held. Truly one of the best breeds I’ve ever added to my coop! And honestly… I’m already hooked. I can’t wait to add Mille Fleur d’Uccles next their coloring is gorgeous, and I know they’ll fit right in with my little feathered fashionistas.
Cackle did add and extra couple to my order and I’m glad they did cause a few of them were DOA.

The Porcelain D’uccle chicks I received from Cackle on the first of August have feathered out and are thriving. I had 100% success raising these chicks with a group of Silver Sebright and Spangled OEGB. The chicks are all very friendly and accustomed to being handled. I was lucky to have a ratio of 2 males to 4 females if I’m guessing the sex of the growing birds. One of my favorite Porcelain D’uccle I call Little Blue as her color is spectacular. One that I think may be a rooster I call Tweety Bird because it is more lemon yellow. A couple almost have a mille fleur pattern of blue with yellow feathers. Love these booted bantams and the hatchery for setting us up for success.

Chicks arrived on time and in healthy, robust condition. I called ahead to my postal annex to alert them to the shipment and they notified me right away once the chicks had arrived. Cackle customer service was very kind and helpful, answering questions I had during shipping. I ordered six and was thrilled to see eight happy peeps on arrival.

The silliest Babies!
I ordered 5 and got 2 extra. No regrets! One of them has splay leg, but all of them are the goofiest birds and they are so sweet and do great with handling! This is the least skittish batch of chicks I’ve ever had. Thanks Cackle Hatchery!

Cute quirky birds!
I bought a mixed batch of baby chicks, all arrived healthy except for one that died the next day. I bought 5 porcelains total, and ended up with 2 boys and 3 girls. All of them are super quirky (one will get up high and fly on my head when she sees me) and friendly, And healthy. They are about 7 to 8 months old currently and doing great!

Beautiful Birds
The Porcelains are quiet. Not aggressive. We have one pair and they stay together even though we have 15 other bantams. They are shy, stick close to the barn even though they are free range. We have had very good experiences with Cackle Hatchery and will order from them again.

Thanks
Everything went perfectly. We ordered 28 chicks from different varieties & got 35 total. Shipped on May 26 & got here on the 28th. I was so worried the post office would mess things up. They never called me but thanks to Cackle’s system, I got the tracking # & monitored the shipment. They all arrived perfectly fine chirping like crazy & moving around. I followed their instructions & all were doing great til Saturday when 1 of the porcelain duccles died overnight. For such a long journey I am extremely & pleasantly surprised. We ordered 5 of these porcelain duccles & got 1 extra so even though it’s sad it’s ok. Very pleased with the way the company works. Thank you so much.Highly recommend.

Thanks!
We have no words to adequately express our gratitude to everyone at Cackle Hatchery! The weather was so cold with temps in the 20’s and wind chills in the teens. But a box of 34 chicks arrived safely! The little Porcelain D’Uccles are wonderful. Thank you so very much! The Smith Family
