Black Swedish Duck

Breed Overview and Origin

The Black Swedish Duck is a calm, hardy, all-purpose duck known for its dark plumage, large white neck and chest patch, excellent foraging ability, and easy-going temperament. If you want a family-friendly duck that can handle cold climates, forage well, and bring classic backyard charm, this breed is a strong choice.

Swedish ducks originated in Pomerania, a Baltic Sea region that was once part of Sweden. Cackle Hatchery’s Swedish Duck in the Heritage Breed Spotlight explains that Swedish ducks have existed for more than 200 years and have been in the United States since 1884. The Blue variety entered the American Standard of Perfection in 1904, and Black Swedish ducks share the same breed family and practical backyard value.

Cackle Hatchery® offers Black Swedish Ducklings for customers who want calm, useful ducks for backyard flocks, family pets, foraging, eggs, and meat. Cackle’s listing describes Black Swedish ducklings as entertaining pets and useful table birds.

Appearance and Characteristics

Black Swedish Ducks are easy to recognize because of their dark body color and large white spot on the neck and chest. This white bib gives them a classic Swedish look and makes them stand out from solid-colored ducks.

Their dark feathers can be practical in outdoor settings because they do not stand out as brightly as white ducks. However, predator protection is still important. Ducks need secure nighttime housing, safe fencing, and protection from raccoons, foxes, dogs, hawks, and other common threats.

Black Swedish Ducks are sturdy, cold-hardy, and easy to enjoy. Their calm personality also makes them a good choice for families and young children with supervision.

Black Swedish Duck vs Blue Swedish Duck

Black Swedish and Blue Swedish ducks share the same general breed background, calm temperament, and all-purpose value. The main difference is feather color.

Choose Black Swedish Ducks if you want a dark duck with a white chest bib and a bold classic look. Choose Blue Swedish Ducks if you prefer a softer blue-gray bird with the same Swedish breed appeal.

Both varieties are hardy, calm, and useful for backyard flocks. In addition, both can provide eggs, meat value, and family-friendly personalities.

Black Swedish Duck vs White Pekin Duck

Black Swedish Ducks and White Pekin Ducks can both work well for backyard flocks, pets, eggs, and meat. However, they fit different customer goals.

Choose Black Swedish Ducks if you want a cold-hardy, calm, dark-feathered duck with a distinctive bib and strong foraging ability. Choose White Pekins if you want a larger, faster-growing white duck that is especially popular for meat and pet use.

Swedish ducks are a nice middle ground for customers who want a practical family duck with a more unique look than the common white duck.

Egg Production

Black Swedish Ducks can provide useful egg production for backyard flocks. They are not as egg-focused as Khaki Campbells or Welsh Harlequins, but they offer a strong balance of eggs, temperament, foraging, and meat value.

Duck egg production varies by breed, strain, age, health, daylight, weather, feed, and management. Cackle’s How Many Eggs Does a Duck Lay? explains that some duck breeds lay as well as chicken breeds, while breeds kept mainly for meat or ornamental purposes do not lay as heavily as breeds selected specifically for laying.

For customers who want to keep ducks laying well, Cackle’s Ducks for Eggs: How to Keep Your Ducks Laying Well is a helpful internal resource. The article explains that egg production depends on several factors that are often within the keeper’s control.

Foraging and Backyard Value

Black Swedish Ducks are excellent foragers. They enjoy searching for insects, greens, and other natural foods when given safe space to roam.

That foraging ability makes them a great addition to backyard flocks, homesteads, orchards, and small farms. They can add pest patrol, entertainment, eggs, and meat value to a property.

Cackle’s 12 Benefits of Keeping Ducks is a useful internal link for customers who are still deciding whether ducks fit their setup. That article connects duck keeping with practical benefits such as eggs, pest help, entertainment, and backyard value.

Temperament and Suitability

Black Swedish Ducks are calm, easy to handle, and good-natured. Their easy-going disposition makes them an ideal family duck, especially for young children with adult supervision.

They are also hardy and can thrive in cold climates when given proper shelter, dry bedding, and clean water. This makes them a good fit for customers who want a duck that can handle seasonal weather changes better than more delicate birds.

Like all ducks, Black Swedish Ducks need clean drinking water deep enough to dip and clean their bills and nostrils. They also need predator protection, shade in hot weather, dry bedding, safe housing, and enough room to move comfortably.

Keeping Ducks With Chickens

Some customers want to raise ducks and chickens together. This setup can work in some situations, but ducks and chickens have different water, bedding, and nighttime needs.

Ducks splash water and can quickly make bedding wet. Cackle’s Keeping Ducks Together with Chickens explains that first-time duck owners should not manage ducks exactly like chickens because ducks have different habits and care needs.

For customers planning a mixed flock, dry bedding, smart water placement, and enough space are especially important.

Fall Duck Shipping

For customers looking for ducks outside the main spring season, Cackle notes that fall duck shipping may be available for Black Swedish Ducks. Customers should check the Black Swedish Duck fall shipping page and the Availability Chart for current hatch and shipping dates.

Cackle Hatchery® cannot ship ducks to Hawaii. Keep this shipping note clear so customers can plan before placing an order.

  1. Amy Taylor

I ordered a sexed female and that’s what I got, but she lays white eggs, and not the blue/green tinted eggs I was hoping for. She and her blue Swedish sister are beautiful and because they’re so talkative they make fantastic “watch ducks” but I was just hoping for some colored duck eggs.

  2. JimmyFE

Swedish Ducks Black or Blue Full of Personality

I have both Black and Blue Swedish Ducks and they are funny and full of personality…easy to raise, smart and they are spoiled rotten…you should see them interact w my Great Pyraneese “HellBitch”, Shes 100lb Duck or maybe theyre 6lb great pyrs, but they have fun together…i recommend the swedish

  3. Strange bird Sue

    Good watch dog

These guys come soo tiny and seem frail. Don’t be desieved. Hardy little guys that grow up to have big attitudes. They let me know if someone comes around (man or beast). Well suited for cold weather and have become strong leaders for my flock

  4. Stephanie

    Great ducks

Great Ducks. Wonderful egg layers. Beautiful to look at too.

  5. Steve

    Good looking duck

I have two Black Swedes (and three of the Blue Swedes). They’re very hardy ducks – like to sleep outside and they get along well with the other breeds. They’re not super calm – still trying to tame them to be more friendly. Not mean, but they don’t come up and greet me like the Muscovoys do. Overall I like them though!

  6. Charlie

    Beautiful

Beautiful ducks with nice personality. We trained them to herd into their building at night. We have predator issues.

  7. Florida duck lovers

    Outstanding ducks, geese and service.

Picked up baby ducks and geese this morning. All 50 were alert and energetic. Tonight they are eating and drinking well. We couldn’t be happier or more satisfied.

  8. beamandcheapbeer

    Absolutely amazing breed!

In my experience, the Black Swedish duck is amazing! My kiddos just absolutely loved her! We would take walks around the neighborhood. Our neighbors got a kick out of Ducky! Highly recommended breed to train living in the house!
