Description
Cuckoo Marans Chicken
Breed Overview and Origin
The Cuckoo Marans chicken is a rare, useful dark brown egg layer with roots in France. If you want a bird that brings something different to the egg basket, this breed is best known for its deep chocolate-brown eggs and practical dual-purpose value.
Marans chickens originated near the town of Marans, France, during the 1800s. Farmers developed them as sturdy dual-purpose birds for both eggs and meat. Today, Marans remain especially popular with chicken keepers who want darker brown eggs than most standard brown egg breeds produce.
Cackle Hatchery® has developed its production-type Cuckoo Marans bloodline since 1999. This line focuses on good egg production, reliable growth, and practical flock performance. Cackle’s production-type Cuckoo Marans generally have limited to no feathering on the legs, which many backyard keepers prefer in muddy or wet conditions.
Appearance and Characteristics
Cuckoo Marans have a black-and-white cuckoo feather pattern that many people compare to Barred Plymouth Rocks. The pattern gives the bird a clean, traditional look, while the Marans egg color gives it a more unusual place in the flock.
This production-type line usually has limited to no feathers on the legs. That makes daily care simpler if your run gets muddy, snowy, or wet. By comparison, French Cuckoo Marans usually have feathered legs and a slightly different breed presentation.
These birds grow quickly and carry enough size for dual-purpose use. So, if you want a chicken that lays dark eggs and still has some meat value, Cuckoo Marans are a practical option.
Cuckoo Marans vs French Cuckoo Marans: What’s the Difference?
Cuckoo Marans and French Cuckoo Marans look similar, but they are not the same Cackle Hatchery® offering.
Choose Cuckoo Marans if you want the production-type version with limited to no leg feathering. This option is often easier to manage in wet or muddy yards.
Choose French Cuckoo Marans if you want the French feather-legged version. Cackle lists the French line as having feathered legs, a docile temperament, large eggs, and dark brown shell color in the #5 to #8 range on the French Marans egg color chart.
For a deeper explanation, read Cackle Hatchery’s guide, English Marans or French Marans Chicken?. Cackle explains that it began breeding cuckoo Marans in 1999, when English Marans were more common in the United States, and later used “French Marans” to distinguish feather-legged French imports from the English type.
Egg Production and Utility
Cuckoo Marans are best known for dark brown eggs. Some eggs may show darker speckles or pigment spots, which is normal for Marans. The shell color can also shift during a hen’s laying cycle, so you may see darker eggs at some times and lighter eggs at others.
Cackle notes that egg color in its Cuckoo Marans generally ranges around #3 to #6 on the Marans color scale. That is darker than many common brown egg layers, though not always as dark as some French Marans lines.
Good nutrition supports shell quality. Calcium and vitamin K may offer some limited help with maintaining darker shell color, but genetics and the hen’s laying cycle play the bigger role. Actual production and shell color can vary with age, feed, daylight, weather, stress, and overall flock care.
If you enjoy hatching projects, Cuckoo Marans Fertile Hatching Eggs may be available at limited times of the year. For birds closer to laying age, Cuckoo Marans Started Pullets may also be a good option.
Temperament and Suitability
Cuckoo Marans can make practical backyard and homestead chickens. They grow well, lay attractive dark brown eggs, and bring more body than many lighter egg breeds.
Their cleaner legs make them easier to manage than feather-legged varieties if you deal with wet soil, snow, or mud. That said, every flock still needs dry bedding, good drainage, clean water, quality feed, predator protection, and enough space.
They can fit a coop-and-run setup, and they can also enjoy free range when you provide a safe area. As with any breed, temperament can vary by bird, handling, and flock setup.
Is the Cuckoo Marans Chicken Right for Your Flock?
Choose Cuckoo Marans if you want:
A rare French-origin chicken
A dark brown egg layer
A production-type Marans from Cackle Hatchery®
A bird with limited to no leg feathering
A fast-growing dual-purpose chicken
A black-and-white cuckoo feather pattern
A useful backyard or homestead bird
A cleaner-legged alternative to French Cuckoo Marans
A hatching egg or started pullet option when available
Overall, this breed is a good fit if you want darker eggs without choosing a feather-legged Marans line. It gives you a useful mix of egg color, growth, and backyard practicality.
If you are still comparing breeds, the Chicken Breed Selector and Chicken Breeds List Comparison Chart can help you sort birds by egg color, purpose, size, and flock needs.
Breed History and Preservation
The Marans breed developed in and around the town of Marans, France, during the 1800s. Farmers wanted a hardy dual-purpose bird that could provide both eggs and meat. Over time, the breed became famous for its unusually dark brown eggs.
The American Poultry Association recognizes Marans in the Continental class, but not every Marans color variety has APA recognition. Cackle lists its production-type Cuckoo Marans as APA status “No,” even though the broader Marans breed has recognized varieties in the United States.
In the United States, Cuckoo Marans remain less common than many standard brown egg breeds. That gives them extra appeal if you want something a little more unusual in your flock.
Recognition and Availability
The American Poultry Association places recognized Marans varieties in the Continental class. However, Cackle’s production-type Cuckoo Marans do not currently carry APA recognition as a variety.
You can start with Cuckoo Marans chicks when they are in season. If you want older birds, Cuckoo Marans Started Pullets may be available. If you prefer hatching, Cuckoo Marans Fertile Hatching Eggs may be offered at limited times of the year.
Before you plan your order, check the Availability Chart for current hatch and shipping options. Availability can change by season, hatch date, and egg numbers.

I’ve been ordering chicks from Cackle for 12 years. These were my first time with Cuckoo Marans and as usual I was NOT disappointed. Chicks arrived in May, they are now grown up girls that are laying beautiful dark brown eggs. They are such calm friendly ladies. Big hens. Strong. I have been so so pleased with these girls. They have matured into really nice hens and I am well pleased with them. They are hearty sound and friendly birds. Worth adding to a flock!!!

I received my day one chicks early in June. These cuckoo Marans are lovely. Nice and large, the rooster has a nice crow. I’m anxious for them to begin laying!!

I received a mixed breed order of 45 chicks; Easter Eggers, Rhode Island Reds and Cuckoo Marans the beginning of July. All chicks arrived healthy and active and are quickly growing into young pullets. The Cuckoo Marans are quite impressive, the roosters are 50% larger than the RIRs. A few of the Marans hens are larger than the RIR roosters also. I have grown Cuckoo Marans in the past, and I really like the breed. They are friendly and calm and lay a good amount ot dark brown eggs. I have always been happy with Cackle Hatchery chicks and believe they are superior to other hatcheries in temperment and laying ability.

2 1/2 . It isn’t really for the chickens itself. I bought some blue egg layers along with a few of these cuckoo marans. As well as another breed that I don’t recall… they were for two elderly couples That wanted some chicken so we thought we would get them some free of charge. anyways what they did was they put a colored dye on the beard of the chickens that were supposed to be these cuckoo marans. Fast-forward…. We ended up giving away these dark brown egg layers, which are the ones we wanted to keep…. Because we have already ordered blue egg layers from them not too long ago

We originally purchased three day-old pullets, and received an extra, which we really appreciated. All four girls were healthy and vigorous at six weeks, when we gifted three of the four to our friends who were looking to start a flock. The one we kept is easy to work with, gets along well with the rest of the flock (which includes standards hens from multiple breeds), and lays beautiful, dark eggs. I do have to say that some of her eggs, particularly when she first lays again after molt and winter break, are more of a rosy-peach color. After a few weeks, they get a lot darker, and are a gorgeous dark copper color by mid-late spring. She does not lay much once summer temperatures soared and drought set in (100s and up for multiple weeks), but that is true of most of the flock. It is now mid-January, and since she started laying again two weeks ago. She is generally more aloof than many of our other hens, but is friendlier when she is laying. We have not tried processing any as meat birds, but she is a sturdy and well-built hen that would likely make a good table bird. Another bonus: her eggs hold up beautifully when preserving with water-glassing.

Happy Camper
I was a little concerned that my order said “processing” after ship date of the 27th. I received my order of 18 healthy Cuckoo Marans +1 on Friday the 29th. They are doing great. No issues yet, no losses. Did have 2 develop “pastey butt” this morning the 31st. I added Dr. Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar to the water. I am very pleased with the quality and health of the chicks. Will definitely order from again without hesitation.

Nice layers, lighter eggs than anticipated
We ordered 3 Cuckoo Marans female chicks last spring, and they are now beginning to lay at about 8 months. All three arrived perfectly healthy, and grew into big, agreeable hens! They are reliably laying decent sized, darkish eggs, though they are noticeably lighter than the eggs pictured. We were very excited about the dark eggs, but despite this are pleased with them overall.

Thanks
We ordered 50 birds back in july. 15 easter eggers, 10 Jersey giants, 10 Buffs, 5 Leg horns, 5 welsumers, and 5 marans. All of the birds arrived alive which is amazing since we are located in hawaii! I would like to point out that they give you a full list of what you ordered/ got extra which was a really nice touch. We lost one bird at a few days old but Cackle sent us 60 birds instead of 50 so it wasn’t an issue. I would like to mention we ordered 10 roos that were all marked on their heads with paint which was amazing. Fast forward a few months. all of the birds made it besides that one we lost in the first few days. We have a few extra roos that we didnt order but I think they gave them to us because we ordered 5 buff roos and 5 jersey roos but zero egger roos. Also, all of the birds are very healthy and all seem to be growing to breed standards. I couldn’t be happier with my order. I have ordered from other hatcheries in the past and I have had many issues (wrong chickens, dead/ sick birds, bad packaging, the list goes on) none of those issues happened when I ordered from cackle. With all of that being said they are still a hatchery and the birds aren’t going to be the cream of the crop to say but they are damn close! If you want a decent flock with beautiful birds and you don’t want to pay an absurd price to a private breeder cackle is your one stop shop!

Excellent hatchery
Excellent hatchery. Highly recommend

Longevity Concern
I purchased 4 Maran pullets in autumn of 2018 and while they were wonderful chicks, they have just started laying and I have lost 2 to egg laying issues (one was egg bound and one suffered from prolapsed vent which eventually lead to her death). I have free choice oyster shell and an existing flock of 18 healthy and happy girls. I am not sure if this is a breed related or breeding issue, but it was definitely disappointing to put 9 months into a bird to have them die at the start of egg laying.

Wonderful Egg Quality for Hatchery Birds
I was very skeptical at first, when I read other breeders comments on how the egg color was not that great on hatchery marans but after owning these birds for almost 2 years and seeing the consistency of their egg color, Cackle, I believe in your quality. I am ordering Black Marans this year which are more expensive, but putting my faith in the breeding experts at Cackle that these new Marans will be everything I hoped for.

great chicken
I ordered these last May, none have feathers on feet which is nice, this is my 1st year owning these their eggs do range from deep chocolate brown to chocolate brown, the hens are friendly and allow you to check under them for eggs without pecking your hands, even the rooster is very nice not disappointed. The chicks arrived safe and sound this morning. The Post Master called me at 6:55 AM this morning and told me the chicks had arrived. Thank you very much, I was afraid they would be in bad shape or possibly some had not made it due to the hot weather, however thank the Good Lord, they were all alive and seemed to be healthy. They went straight to their water and started eating before I came to work. All is fine. Again I appreciate your prompt and kind service. They are all well and fine this morning and I thank you and your personnel for the help.

I wanted to thank you for your help with our poultry order this year. It was was disheartening to lose so many chicks and I really appreciated you calling me personally to do some troubleshooting. I also want to thank you for the beautiful replacement chicks you sent. They are doing fine and it was so nice to get to try some of the breeds that were sold out before. As a side note I was to say how impressed I am with your Spitzhaubens. They are perky, energetic and extremely friendly. Plus they are a treat to look at! Thank you for your top notch service, personal attention and prize-winning birds.

The chicks are very active. After I dipped their beaks in the warm water, they ran across the enclosure as if to show glee. They ate and drank like old pros after just a short time. These are my first chickens (I’m 71). I am amazed at how fast they learn. I’m very impressed with how your operation works. People are very courteous and the job gets done as it should. Thanks again. Hope this works nicely so I can order a couple straight runs next time.

Greetings
I just wanted to tell you we have received the chicks a week ago. There were 21 in all and they are doing wonderful. Have never ordered online before, so I was somewhat nervous. I am very pleased that they are healthy and it was a wonderful experience with your company.
