Description

Lavender English Orpington Chicken

Breed Overview and Color Genetics

The Orpington breed originated in England in the 1800s, but the Lavender English Orpington is a more recent and highly sought-after variety. Its plumage is a soft, even light slate blue, often referred to as “self blue” because each feather is a uniform color.

Unlike blue varieties, lavender birds breed true, meaning mating two lavenders will consistently produce 100% lavender offspring. This makes them especially appealing for breeders looking for color consistency.

Appearance and Characteristics

Lavender English Orpingtons are known for their distinctive, rounded look and impressive size:

  • Broad, deep body with a low stance
  • Short back and legs compared to American Orpingtons
  • Loose, soft plumage creating a full, fluffy appearance

Mature roosters typically weigh 13–15 pounds, while hens range from 9–12 pounds.

Egg Production and Utility

These birds are a dual-purpose breed, valued for both eggs and meat. Hens produce approximately 90–120 medium-sized eggs per year with shells ranging from brown to cream.

They are considered reliable winter layers and, as a slower-growing breed, are also appreciated for their rich, flavorful meat.

Temperament and Suitability

Lavender English Orpingtons are exceptionally docile and people-friendly, making them an excellent choice for:

  • Backyard flocks
  • Families with children
  • Beginner chicken keepers

They enjoy foraging but also adapt well to confinement, offering flexibility in different setups.

Hardiness and Care

Their loose feathering makes them highly winter hardy, while still tolerating warmer climates with proper care.

Broodiness is variable, but some hens will set and raise chicks successfully.

Important Breeding Note

Lavender chickens may carry what is often referred to as the “shredder gene,” which can cause:

  • Frayed or split feathering
  • Rough feather appearance, especially in males

This is a known trait associated with the lavender gene and does not impact overall health.

Recognition and Availability

English Orpingtons, including the lavender variety, are not currently recognized by the American Poultry Association.

Cackle Hatchery® has been developing its 100% English Lavender Orpington bloodline since 2024.

Breeding and Management Notes

Fertility typically ranges from 65–80%, with a recommended mating ratio of 4 females to 1 male. They prefer roosting heights between 2 to 4 feet and are easy to manage in most flock environments.
