Description

Golden Cochin Bantam Chicken

Breed Overview and Origin

The Golden Laced Cochin Bantam chicken is a small, fluffy, feather-legged bantam with beautiful black and golden-brown feathering. If you want a miniature chicken that looks fancy, behaves well, and works nicely as a pet or show bird, this Cochin Bantam variety is a strong choice.

Cochins trace back to large feather-legged chickens from China that arrived in Europe and North America during the 1840s and 1850s. The Livestock Conservancy explains that Cochins helped spark the 19th-century “hen fever” because their heavy feathering, large size, and calm disposition impressed poultry keepers.

The bantam version gives customers the same soft, rounded Cochin look in a smaller bird. Cackle Hatchery® sells Golden Laced Cochin Bantams as baby chicks, and the breed fits well for backyard pets, children’s poultry projects, exhibition, and customers who enjoy feather-footed bantams.

Appearance and Characteristics

Golden Laced Cochin Bantams have gorgeous black and golden-brown feathers. The lacing gives each bird a rich, patterned look, while the fluffy body and feathered feet create the classic Cochin Bantam shape.

These birds have a round, soft appearance with plenty of feathering on the body, legs, and feet. That full feathering makes them look larger and puffier than many other bantams.

The Livestock Conservancy describes Cochins as full, soft-feathered birds with feathering that extends down the legs, feet, and toes. Although the bantam is much smaller than the large fowl, it keeps that same feather-legged style.

Golden Laced Cochin Bantam vs Other Cochin Bantams

Golden Laced Cochin Bantams share the same fluffy body, feathered feet, and gentle nature found in other Cochin Bantam varieties. The main difference is color.

Choose Golden Laced Cochin Bantams if you want black and golden-brown laced feathering. Choose Black, Buff, Partridge, Barred, Blue, Splash, Mottled, Birchen, or other Cochin Bantams if you prefer a different color pattern.

Cochins International lists Golden Laced as a standardized bantam Cochin variety. The group also lists several other Cochin Bantam colors, including Black, Buff, Partridge, Barred, Birchen, Blue, Mottled, Silver Laced, Splash, and White.

Cochin Bantam vs Standard Golden Laced Cochin

Cochin Bantams are the miniature version of the standard Cochin. They keep the soft feathering, feathered feet, and gentle personality, but they take up less room and eat less feed.

Choose Golden Laced Cochin Bantams if you want a smaller bird for pets, children, showing, broody hens, or limited backyard space. Choose the standard Golden Laced Cochin Chicken if you want the larger version with more body size.

Cackle’s bantam category explains that bantams are miniature chickens, often about one-third to one-fifth the size of standard chickens. Because of their smaller size, many customers like bantams for pets, showing, broody hens, and small backyards.

Egg Production and Utility

Golden Laced Cochin Bantams may lay small brown bantam eggs, but they are not heavy production layers. Most customers choose them for temperament, beauty, broodiness, and show appeal.

Cochin Bantam hens often make good broody mothers. That makes them useful for hobby keepers who enjoy natural hatching and chick raising. Since they are small, they cannot cover as many eggs as a large hen, but their mothering instinct can be very helpful in a bantam flock.

If your main goal is a full egg basket, choose a standard-size production layer. However, if you want a gentle, fluffy bantam that brings personality, mothering ability, and ornamental value, this variety is a sweet option.

Temperament and Suitability

Golden Laced Cochin Bantams are gentle, attractive, and easy to enjoy. Their calm nature makes them a good choice for families, small backyard flocks, poultry projects, and customers who want a friendly bantam with personality.

They can also show well. Their round body, feathered feet, soft plumage, and golden laced coloring give them strong exhibition appeal when birds have good type and condition.

Because they have feathered feet, they need dry housing and clean bedding. Mud, wet litter, and snow can collect in the foot feathers, so it helps to keep the run well drained and check their feet during messy weather.

Feathered Feet Care

Feathered feet are part of the Cochin Bantam charm, but they need extra attention. Keep bedding dry, avoid muddy runs when possible, and check the feet if the weather turns wet or snowy.

A clean coop makes a big difference. In addition, low roosts can help these small, heavily feathered birds get on and off the perch safely. Since their feet carry feathers, rough wire flooring or constantly damp ground can damage feather condition.

With simple care, Golden Laced Cochin Bantams can stay comfortable and look their best.

Choose Golden Laced Cochin Bantams if you want:

Breed History and Preservation

Cochins began as large feather-legged chickens from China. When they arrived in the West, their size, feathering, and calm temperament created major excitement among poultry keepers. In fact, the breed helped push poultry keeping from simple farm use into hobby and exhibition circles.

Bantam Cochins later gave keepers the same look in miniature form. These smaller birds became popular because they were easier to house, easier to show, and still carried the same fluffy feather-footed charm.

Cochins International lists Golden Laced Cochin Bantams as standardized in 1965, while the large-fowl Golden Laced Cochin also appears as a standardized large-fowl variety. Today, the Golden Laced variety remains a beautiful option for customers who like patterned feathering and classic Cochin Bantam temperament.

  1. Monica Bailey

Love this breed! Very friendly, clam and cute! Great for my backyard coop. Loves to hang out in the garden with me. I would definitely order this one again.

  2. MICHELLE COLE

Absolutely love our order! Strong healthy chicks grew up to be beautiful healthy pullets! They are the perfect size! Perfect coloring! Best feathering! Will definitely order again next year!!!

  3. s.kress

Meant to give a 3 star rating on my previous review, not a 4 star. 3 star because they are healthy and pretty but only 3 stars due to the sexing screw up.

  4. s.kress

Beautiful chicks, healthy. Bought as a gift for my daughter who loves the Golden Laced.
Ordered 3 pullets and unfortunately received 3 cockerels.
Realize it’s not 100% accuracy but it is discouraging to place an order for sexed chicks (pullets) and end up with males. Being a small order and having to pay the extra $20.00 I would hope that I wasn’t paying for males that I have no use for.
My other orders from Cackle were spot on in their sexing but I have to say they were all auto-sexed breeds so am not sure if vent sexer had an “off” day this time or someone pulled these Golden Laced from the wrong box.

  5. Cackle Hatchery Team

    So sorry Lin

Please send us pictures. Perhaps you were sent the standard sized cochin. Please contact us so we can make this right. Call 417-532-4581 or email cacklehatchery@cacklehatchery.com

  6. Lin

    not miniature cochin I expected

I wonder if my order was confused? I have given these 6 month old chickens to my daughter as these are huge in comparison to the rest of my cochin breeds. Nice chickens, nice demeanor and coloring, expect nice sized eggs, just too big for my flock.

  7. farmer john

    needs more brreding work

These birds I do have to give them credit for really well pattern of Golden Laced but they ate a bit leggy and don’t have enough width through the body very narrow and pointed especially the high end and rump and really need for breeding feathering down the leg and shanks. Not show quality at all and pricey for pets.

  8. JLD

Very happy with my golden laced bantam chickens and with Cackle Hatchery.

My 5 golden laced cochin bantams are now 5 months old. They have thrived and developed into beautiful hens. Very gentle and easy to work with. This is the second time I have ordered from Cackle Hatchery. Both times the baby chicks have arrived healthy and strong.

  9. chick

Purchased a cockerel and 4 pullets for my daughter. She showed them in our small county fair and won champion bantam with the cockerel. sweet birds.

    Nice birds

  10. Rusty

    Wonderful birds

We are quite satisfied with our birds. They are healthy, robust and quite friendly. More pets than livestock, they are very easy to cate for.

  11. Philip

    Active and healthy birds

My birds are now 4 months old. One extra bird was sent with my order, but didn’t make it, so I got exactly as many as I paid for. The remaining birds arrived healthy, grew quickly, and developed nice variations in their coloring. Some have feathers that are mostly black with a little bit of brown in the center, others are more brown than black. There are different shades of brown as well. They are all friendly, quiet, and will eat from my hand. Surprisingly, they don’t seem interested in meal worms, which my previous chickens loved. Favorite treats are corn meal, grasshoppers, and bee pollen.

  12. WallFarms

Hobbying with our new breed of chicken

We received our order of 5 Golden Laced Cochin Bantams almost 3 weeks ago along with 27 other chicks. We are looking forward to watching these grow. They are already making good progress. This is our second order from your hatchery and have been very pleased with each order. My wife and I also attended the festival this past year and enjoyed our time there. Thanks for your hard work in producing good stock. We always share Cackle Hatchery as being the source for our flock.

  13. Brad & Vicki Texas May 2010

    Cackle Hatchery

We received them the morning after I wrote you. Chickens are wonderful!! We only had 1 die about 4 hours after we put them in the brooder. I am very happy with Cackle Hatchery. This is the 2nd time we have ordered chickens from you all. We will always do business with you and we will let our friends know. Thank you
