Description

Silver Duckwing Old English Bantam Chicken

Breed History and Origin

Cackle Hatchery® has spent years breeding Old English Bantams, including the well-established Silver Duckwing Old English Bantam. This variety traces back to traditional European game fowl and has been refined into a true bantam for exhibition. The Silver Duckwing pattern has been recognized by the American Standard of Perfection since 1938, making it one of the more classic and dependable show varieties. Cackle Hatchery® has been developing its own bloodline or strain of pure Silver Duckwing Old English Game Bantams since 1993, focusing on maintaining correct type, coloration, and overall consistency.

Appearance and Breed Characteristics

The Silver Duckwing Old English Bantam is known for its clean, high-contrast feather pattern. It typically features bright silver hackles and saddle feathers over a darker black breast and body, creating a sharp and defined “duckwing” appearance. Like other Old English Game Bantams, it carries a proud, upright posture with tight feathering and a well-balanced, athletic build. Mature roosters typically weigh around 24 ounces and hens around 22 ounces, with pullets and cockerels slightly smaller. As part of the Game Bantam class, this breed is bred for symmetry, alertness, and clean feather lines that perform well in exhibition.

Egg Production and Broodiness

The Silver Duckwing Old English Bantam is not bred for egg production and is considered a poor layer. Hens lay small cream or tinted bantam-sized eggs in limited quantities. However, they are known to be setters, meaning hens will go broody and can hatch eggs successfully. Fertility typically ranges from 40–55%, with a recommended mating ratio of approximately nine females to one male.

Temperament and Backyard Suitability

This breed is active and spirited but is generally easy to handle with regular interaction. Despite their alert nature, they are often tame enough to be handled by adults and children alike when properly managed. Their small size makes them well-suited for backyard flocks, especially where space is limited. They can do well with other calm breeds, though their active personality should be considered. A roost height of 3 feet or higher is recommended.

Production Positioning and Exhibition Use

The Silver Duckwing Old English Bantam is best positioned as an ornamental and exhibition breed with minimal production value. While they may lay occasional eggs, their primary appeal lies in their sharp coloration, classic game bird posture, and adherence to APA standards. This makes them a strong choice for poultry shows and for hobbyists looking for a traditional bantam with proven show quality.

Breeding Note / Color Note

Maintaining the clean silver hackles without brassiness and a deep, even black body is essential for exhibition-quality birds. Selective breeding should focus on color clarity, feather condition, and proper body structure to meet breed standards.

They Are Very Sweet, Thank You.

I bought three colors of OEGB (Silver Duckwing, Spangled, and Ginger).

The chicks arrived in 2 days. I ordered 16 and received 3 extra (in generous consideration if any didn’t survive), making 19 chicks total. 5 weeks later, only 1 chick died, so I consider this a great survival rate.

Their colors look great and I look forward to seeing their full feathering. So far we seem to have more hens than roosters, so we got lucky.

The chicks have been very friendly and we have really enjoyed them. They run right up to our hands and are obsessed with perching on us—they just jump right up on your arms and shoulders!

The first few weeks, they were very easy to handle and cuddle. 5 weeks later, they are still very friendly but more spirited and want to perch on us rather than be overly handled.

I’m happy with them and would recommend Cackle Hatchery.

    Quality bantams

I order 5 silver duck wing bantams and i am happy to say they all are alive and well. 3 turned out to be males and all three have beautiful plumage and colors. They also seem to get along well with no aggression issues. Definitely recommend these birds along with any other breed.

    Silver duckwing bantams

We had a silver duckwing old english bantam that was the sweetest and friendliest of all our chickens. She disappeared one day and we had to get another. I ordered 5 and they were healthy chicks now grown and as friendly and sweet as our little Ash.

  6. Banty

Sad loss of our favorite chicken

We lost our little “Banty” to a hawk yesterday. Our family was and is devastated, as he was by far our favorite. Smallest defender of his 13 large hens, and always letting us pick him up (with an occasional peck to remind us of his manhood). We will definitely be getting another of these and hope to have just as good a result but for a longer life this time. RIP Banty.

  7. Iowa Chicken Chick

    Thank You

I want to thank you for my bantam old english chickens. I have never had chicks that love me so much. I treat them as though they are my children. They like to be held and kissed. I really love them. Thanks again. If I need more I will order from you folks again.

    Cackle Hatchery

I recently received my order of Old English Game Bantams. The order consisted of four varieties totaling 36 chicks. They all arrived in excellent condition, perfectly strong and healthy. In a short time they were busy eating, drinking and scampering around. I am really pleased with them! A very satisfied customer.
