Description

Black Swedish Duck

Breed History and Origin

The Black Swedish Duck is a hardy and versatile breed originating from Pomerania (historically part of Sweden, now Germany). Known for its adaptability and utility, this breed has remained popular among backyard flock owners and small farms. Cackle Hatchery® Poultry Breeding Farm has been developing its Blue and Black Swedish duck bloodlines since 1977, maintaining consistent quality and performance.

Appearance and Breed Characteristics

Black Swedish ducks are easily recognized by their deep black plumage accented with a distinct white bib on the chest. Their bold coloring and clean contrast make them an attractive addition to any flock. Mature hens typically weigh around 6 pounds, while drakes average about 7 pounds, placing them in the Medium Weight duck class.

Egg Production and Performance

Black Swedish ducks produce approximately 130–180 large to extra large eggs per year. Eggs are typically white, with occasional gray-tinted shells.

Temperament and Flock Suitability

This breed is known for its docile, calm, and easygoing temperament, making it ideal for backyard flocks and families. Black Swedish ducks are easy to handle and adapt well to a variety of environments. Fertility percentages generally range between 60–75%, with a recommended mating ratio of seven females to one male. Gender accuracy is approximately 90%.

Cold Hardiness and Foraging Ability

Black Swedish ducks are very hardy in colder climates and perform well in northern environments. They are also excellent foragers, helping control insects and making them a practical addition to farms, gardens, and homesteads.

Backyard and Farm Use

This breed is well suited for egg production, meat use, and ornamental appeal. Their calm nature and adaptability make them a strong all-around choice for both beginners and experienced poultry keepers.

Housing and Management

Like other ducks, Black Swedish ducks do not require roosts and remain at ground level (floor). They benefit from access to water and outdoor space for natural foraging.

  1. Amy Taylor

I ordered a sexed female and that’s what I got, but she lays white eggs, and not the blue/green tinted eggs I was hoping for. She and her blue Swedish sister are beautiful and because they’re so talkative they make fantastic “watch ducks” but I was just hoping for some colored duck eggs.

Swedish Ducks Black or Blue Full of Personality

I have both Black and Blue Swedish Ducks and they are funny and full of personality…easy to raise, smart and they are spoiled rotten…you should see them interact w my Great Pyraneese “HellBitch”, Shes 100lb Duck or maybe theyre 6lb great pyrs, but they have fun together…i recommend the swedish

  3. Strange bird Sue

    Good watch dog

These guys come soo tiny and seem frail. Don’t be desieved. Hardy little guys that grow up to have big attitudes. They let me know if someone comes around (man or beast). Well suited for cold weather and have become strong leaders for my flock

  4. Stephanie

    Great ducks

Great Ducks. Wonderful egg layers. Beautiful to look at too.

  5. Steve

    Good looking duck

I have two Black Swedes (and three of the Blue Swedes). They’re very hardy ducks – like to sleep outside and they get along well with the other breeds. They’re not super calm – still trying to tame them to be more friendly. Not mean, but they don’t come up and greet me like the Muscovoys do. Overall I like them though!

  6. Charlie

    Beautiful

Beautiful ducks with nice personality. We trained them to herd into their building at night. We have predator issues.

  7. Florida duck lovers

    Outstanding ducks, geese and service.

Picked up baby ducks and geese this morning. All 50 were alert and energetic. Tonight they are eating and drinking well. We couldn’t be happier or more satisfied.

  8. beamandcheapbeer

    Absolutely amazing breed!

In my experience, the Black Swedish duck is amazing! My kiddos just absolutely loved her! We would take walks around the neighborhood. Our neighbors got a kick out of Ducky! Highly recommended breed to train living in the house!
