Breed Profile
Easter Egger Chicken
Breed Overview and Origin
The Easter Egger™ chicken is one of the most fun birds you can add to a backyard flock. If you want colorful eggs, a wide range of feather colors, and chickens with plenty of personality, Easter Eggers™ are a favorite for good reason.
These chickens trace their background to blue egg laying stock with South American roots. The original blue egg gene came from chickens associated with the Araucana people of Chile. Over time, breeders developed different lines, including Araucanas, Ameraucanas, and the mixed-color Easter Egger™ type many backyard keepers love today.
Easter Eggers™ are not the same as true Araucanas or true Ameraucanas. Instead, they are colorful backyard chickens selected for beards, tails, varied feather patterns, good egg production, and colorful egg shells.
Appearance and Characteristics
Easter Eggers™ come in many colors and patterns. You may see all kinds of feather combinations, which is part of the fun. Since they do not breed as one fixed color variety, each flock can look a little different.
Most Easter Eggers™ have a full beard under the beak and a tail. That helps set them apart from true Araucanas, which are rumpless and may have ear tufts. They also differ from true Ameraucanas, which come in recognized color varieties and have more standardized breed traits.
Because Easter Eggers™ can vary so much, do not expect every chick to grow into the same color or pattern. If you enjoy variety, that is a feature, not a flaw.
Easter Egger™ vs Araucana vs Ameraucana
These names often confuse new chicken keepers, so here is the simple version.
Araucanas are a true breed. They are rumpless, meaning they do not have tails, and they may have small ear tufts. Araucanas also carry genetic challenges tied to tufting.
Ameraucanas are also a true breed. They have tails, beards, muffs, and recognized color varieties. Breeders work with them for standard type and show-quality traits.
Easter Eggers™ are different. They usually have tails and beards, but they do not come in pure, standardized color varieties. They are selected more for colorful eggs, varied feather patterns, and backyard usefulness than for poultry show standards.
So, if you want a standardized show breed, look at Ameraucanas or Araucanas. If you want a fun backyard layer that may give you blue, green, or pinkish-brown eggs, Easter Eggers™ are a great choice.
Egg Production and Utility
Easter Egger™ hens are best known for colorful eggs. Shell colors can range from pale blue to darker blue, various shades of green, and occasionally light brownish or pinkish tones.
One important note: each hen usually lays one egg color. For example, a hen that starts laying green eggs will generally keep laying green eggs. You get the rainbow effect from having multiple hens in the flock, not from one hen changing colors every day.
These birds also make practical backyard layers. Cackle Hatchery® selects Easter Eggers™ for colorful egg shells and good egg production. Actual laying can vary with age, daylight, feed, weather, housing, and overall care.
The meat can also be useful. Your original description notes that it has a flavor similar to quail, which makes this bird more than just a novelty egg layer for some homesteads.
Temperament and Suitability
Easter Eggers™ work well in backyard coops, larger chicken houses, and free-range flocks. They are popular with families because they bring variety, color, and a little surprise to the egg basket.
They can be a good choice for beginners, especially if your main goal is a fun, colorful flock rather than strict breed standards. Give them clean water, balanced feed, a dry coop, shade, predator protection, and enough room to move.
Because they vary in color and background, individual temperament can vary too. Still, many keepers find them friendly, curious, and enjoyable to watch.
Crossbeak and Beak Development Note
Easter Eggers™ can have an inherited beak issue called crossbeak or scissor beak. This happens when the top and bottom beak do not line up correctly. In mild cases, a bird may still eat and drink with some management. In more severe cases, the condition can worsen as the chick grows.
Cackle Hatchery® notes that about 1 out of 100 chicks may show some level of this issue as they grow. It is worth knowing before you order so you can watch young birds closely and respond early if one needs extra care.

Breed History and Preservation
Easter Eggers™ trace their background to blue egg laying chickens from South America. The blue egg trait came through chickens linked to the Araucana people of Chile. From that foundation, poultry breeders developed different blue egg lines and breed types.
True Araucanas and Ameraucanas have more specific breed standards. Easter Eggers™ developed as a more varied backyard type. Instead of focusing on one standard color or show form, they focus on colorful eggs, feather variety, and practical flock use.
Because Easter Eggers™ are not a standardized breed, preservation works differently than it does for recognized heritage breeds. Their value comes from the blue egg gene, genetic variety, and backyard usefulness.
Recognition and Availability
The American Poultry Association does not recognize Easter Eggers™ as a standard breed. They are best understood as a colorful, useful backyard chicken type rather than a show breed.
You can choose Easter Egger™ chicks when they are available. If you want birds closer to laying age, Easter Egger™ Started Pullets may be available. Many people who like the standard-size birds also enjoy the Easter Egger Bantam Chicken, the miniature version.
