Description

Black Old English Bantam Chicken

Breed History and Origin

If you are interested in the miniaturized version of the Standard Old English Game chicken, the professionals at Cackle Hatchery® offer several varieties including the Black Old English Bantam. This breed traces back to European game fowl and has been refined over time into a true bantam specifically for exhibition. The Black variety was recognized by the American Standard of Perfection in 1938, and it remains a popular choice for poultry shows today. Cackle Hatchery® has been developing its own bloodline or strain of pure Black Old English Game Bantams since 1993, focusing on maintaining proper type, feather quality, and consistency.

Appearance and Breed Characteristics

The Black Old English Bantam is a compact, athletic bird with a sleek, solid black feathering that gives it a clean and polished appearance. As part of the Game Bantam class, it carries a proud, upright posture with tight feathering, a defined comb, and a well-balanced body. Mature roosters typically weigh around 24 ounces and hens around 22 ounces, with pullets and cockerels slightly smaller. It’s important to note for new keepers that some white feathers may appear during the first and second stages of feathering, which is normal, but by around six months of age they develop into solid black plumage.

Egg Production and Broodiness

The Black Old English Bantam is not bred for egg production and is considered a poor layer. Hens produce small cream or tinted bantam-sized eggs on a limited basis. However, they are known to be setters, meaning hens will go broody and can hatch eggs. Fertility typically ranges from 40–55%, with a recommended mating ratio of approximately nine females to one male.

Temperament and Backyard Suitability

This breed is active and alert but is often noted for being tame enough to handle, even by children, when properly socialized. While they retain some of the spirited nature of game breeds, they are generally manageable and can make good pets in the right environment. Their small size allows them to fit well in backyard setups, though they benefit from secure housing. A roost height of 3 feet or higher is recommended to suit their active nature.

Production Positioning and Exhibition Use

The Black Old English Bantam is best positioned as an ornamental and exhibition breed. It is not intended for egg or meat production but instead valued for its classic game bird appearance, posture, and adherence to breed standards. This makes it a strong choice for poultry exhibitors and hobbyists looking for a traditional bantam with show presence.

Breeding Note / Color Note

Maintaining a consistent, deep black feather color without fading or uneven tones is important for exhibition-quality birds. The early-stage white feathering seen in young birds is temporary and should not be mistaken for poor quality. Selection should focus on feather finish, body type, and overall balance.

    Cackle Hatchery

I recently received my order of Old English Game Bantams. The order consisted of four varieties totaling 36 chicks. They all arrived in excellent condition, perfectly strong and healthy. In a short time they were busy eating, drinking and scampering around. I am really pleased with them! A very satisfied customer.
