Description

Easter Egger Bantam Chicken

Breed History and Origin

The Easter Egger Bantam is the miniature version of the popular Easter Egger Standard chicken. Rather than being a standardized breed, Easter Eggers are a hybrid type bred for their unique egg colors and varied feather patterns. Cackle Hatchery® does not offer a specific color variety for this bantam, but instead breeds for a wide range of mixed feathering colors, making each bird visually unique. This variety has become a favorite among backyard poultry keepers for both its appearance and colorful egg production.

Appearance and Breed Characteristics

Easter Egger Bantam chickens come in a wide assortment of feather colors and patterns, meaning no two birds look exactly alike. Their smaller bantam size makes them easy to manage in backyard settings. Because they are not bred to a strict standard, their appearance can vary widely, but they are most valued for their colorful egg production and friendly personality.

Egg Production and Performance

Easter Egger Bantam hens lay naturally colored eggs, which can range from shades of blue and green to occasional brown or pink tones. Egg size is small, and production is considered good for a bantam breed. Their colorful eggs make them a popular choice for backyard flocks focused on variety.

Temperament and Flock Suitability

Easter Egger Bantams are known for being friendly, adaptable, and great for backyard enjoyment. They make excellent hobby chickens and are well suited for families and small flocks. Hens are also known to be good broody mothers, making them useful for hatching and raising chicks naturally.

Important Breed Notes

It should be noted that this type has an inherent genetic beak issue. Approximately 1 out of 100 chicks may develop a scissor beak or cross beak condition, where the top and bottom beak do not align. This condition can worsen as the bird grows. More information about this issue can be found on the Cackle Hatchery® blog, along with additional resources available online. Unlike some Araucana lines, most Easter Egger chickens do not inherit lethal alleles from their parents.

Backyard and Hobby Use

The Easter Egger Bantam is an excellent all-around backyard chicken, valued for its colorful eggs, friendly nature, and broody tendencies. Their smaller size and unique egg colors make them a fun and practical addition to hobby flocks.

Out of 11 chicks- 7 ended up roosters. Which is pretty disappointing.
I realize this was a “straight run only.” But I won’t be ordering anymore unless they start offering sexing for this breed. Other than that, the roosters are beautiful. The hens haven’t started laying yet.
