Description
Isabel Brahma Chicken
Breed Overview and Appearance
The Isabel Brahma is a truly eye-catching variety, featuring a soft blend of pale golden and lavender plumage. This pastel coloring on such a large, stately bird creates a standout presence in any flock. Also referred to as “Isabella,” this rare color variation adds ornamental appeal to an already impressive breed.
Size and Characteristics
Brahmas are the second largest chicken breed, just behind the Jersey Giant, with some individuals growing even larger. They are known for:
- A broad body and wide stance
- Feathered legs and feet
- A small pea comb and prominent beetle brow
Their heavy build makes them poor flyers, which helps keep them contained in most setups.
Egg Production and Utility
Isabel Brahmas are a dual-purpose breed, valued for both egg production and meat. Hens are dependable layers, producing approximately 180–240 medium to large brown eggs per year, with strong laying performance during winter months.
Temperament and Suitability
Despite their size and bold appearance, Isabel Brahmas are calm, quiet, and exceptionally gentle. They:
- Get along well with other breeds
- Do not bully smaller or timid birds
- Are easy to handle and people-friendly
This makes them an excellent choice for backyard flocks, families, and beginner chicken keepers.
Hardiness and Care
Their large size, dense feathering, and small comb make them highly winter hardy. They also tolerate warmer conditions when provided with adequate shade and water. Feathered legs should be checked regularly for mud or debris buildup.
- Large, docile breed ideal for families and mixed flocks
- 180–240 brown eggs per year with strong winter laying
- Exceptionally cold hardy with proper care
- Poor flyers, making them easy to contain
- Rare pastel plumage adds strong ornamental value
Recognition and Availability
While Brahmas have been recognized by the American Poultry Association since 1874, the Isabel variety is not currently recognized.
