Description

Light Sussex Chicken

The Light Sussex Chicken is a traditional English breed with a long and respected history, recognized by the American Standard of Perfection for its usefulness and beauty. Originating in England, the Light Sussex was developed as a practical dual-purpose chicken, valued for both egg production and meat quality. Its bright white body with black neck hackles and black tail feathers gives it a clean and eye-catching appearance in the flock.

Cackle Hatchery® offers the production-type Light Sussex, bred for steady laying performance and good growth rather than show. These birds are considered dual-purpose, providing both brown eggs and a well-sized table bird. Mature hens generally weigh around 7 pounds, while roosters can reach about 9 pounds, with pullets and cockerels slightly lighter.

Light Sussex chickens are known for their gentle and curious temperament, making them well suited for backyard flocks and free-range systems. They adapt easily to confinement but truly shine when given room to forage. Hens may become broody at times and often make attentive mothers when allowed to set and raise chicks.

Egg production is reliable, with hens laying an estimated 200 to 250 medium-to-large brown eggs per year (production estimates only; see FAQ), depending on care and environment. They prefer a roost height of two to four feet and do best with a breeding ratio of about nine females to one male, with fertility typically ranging between 60 and 75 percent.

Cackle Hatchery® has been developing its Light Sussex bloodline for many years, focusing on strong laying ability, good temperament, and birds that perform well in backyard settings.
