Description

Silver Sebright Bantam Chicken

Breed Overview and Origin

The Silver Sebright Bantam chicken is a true bantam known for its silver-laced feathering, small size, active personality, and classic show-bird style. If you want a small ornamental chicken with a polished look and a long exhibition history, this variety makes a beautiful choice for bantam hobby flocks, 4-H projects, and poultry shows.

Unlike many bantams that are miniature versions of larger chickens, Sebrights are true bantams, meaning they do not have a standard-size counterpart. Cackle Hatchery’s True Bantam Chicken Breeds guide explains that the Sebright is an old English true bantam created by Sir John Sebright. That same resource notes that Sebrights are unique because the males are hen-feathered, with rounded hackle and saddle feathers instead of the long pointed feathers most roosters have.

Silver Sebrights first became known in England in the early 1800s, after years of breeding work by Sir John Sebright. Later, the breed earned a place in the American Poultry Association Standard of Perfection in 1874, which helped secure its reputation as a classic exhibition bantam.

Because Silver Sebrights are small, bright, and highly ornamental, they work best for customers who enjoy active bantams with strong visual appeal. However, they are not the best fit for someone who mainly wants egg production or a broody mother hen.

Appearance and Characteristics

Silver Sebright Bantams have a striking silver-and-black laced pattern. Each feather has a clean silvery-white center outlined in black, which gives the bird a crisp, detailed appearance. As a result, Silver Sebrights stand out beautifully in a show cage, small ornamental flock, or backyard bantam pen.

One of the most unusual Sebright traits is hen feathering in males. Unlike most roosters, Sebright males do not develop long sickle feathers in the tail or pointed hackle and saddle feathers. Instead, they keep a more rounded feather shape, which gives the breed its distinctive exhibition look.

Cackle Hatchery’s Sebright Bantam Surplus Special lists Sebrights in the Rose Comb Clean Legged Bantams show class and gives mature weights of about 20 ounces for hens and 22 ounces for roosters. That page also describes Sebrights as ornamental, exhibition, and production bantams with cream or tinted bantam-sized eggs.

Since Sebrights are small and active, they need secure housing and predator protection. They can fly better than many heavier bantams, so a covered or well-fenced run is often a smart choice.

Silver Sebright vs Golden Sebright Bantams: How to Choose

Silver Sebrights and Golden Sebrights share the same true bantam type, active personality, clean legs, rose comb, hen-feathered males, and ornamental show appeal. The main difference is color.

Choose Silver Sebright Bantam if you want a small true bantam with silvery-white feathers outlined in black.

Choose Golden Sebright Bantam chickens if you prefer golden laced plumage with the same true bantam body type and show appeal. Cackle describes Golden Sebrights as true bantams with golden laced plumage, spirited personalities, and excellent show appeal.

Choose the Sebright Bantam Surplus Special if you enjoy Sebrights and do not need one exact color. That special may be a good fit for customers who want an assortment-style Sebright order when available.

For customers comparing many small chicken options, Cackle Hatchery’s Bantam Chickens for Sale category is a helpful place to review true bantams, clean-legged bantams, feather-legged bantams, and other small-flock options. Cackle notes that many bantam breeds and colors hatch and ship from February through August.

Egg Production and Utility

Silver Sebright Bantams serve mainly as ornamental and exhibition chickens. Therefore, customers should choose them for beauty, true bantam status, small size, and show appeal rather than egg production.

Hens may lay small cream or tinted bantam-sized eggs. However, Sebrights are not heavy layers. Cackle’s true bantam guide describes Sebright hens as poor layers of tinted eggs and notes that they seldom brood.

These birds do not serve as meat chickens either. Instead, their value comes from their laced feather pattern, active personality, unique hen-feathered males, and long exhibition history.

Temperament and Suitability

Silver Sebrights are active, alert, and lively bantams. With regular calm handling, they can become enjoyable birds for hobby keepers and exhibitors. Even so, they are generally more active and flighty than heavier, more docile bantams such as Cochins or Silkies.

In addition, Sebrights can be capable fliers once mature. Because of that, they do best in a secure coop and run where they have room to move but remain protected from predators.

This variety can work well for:

  • Poultry exhibitors
  • Bantam hobby flocks
  • 4-H and youth poultry projects with guidance
  • Customers who want true bantam chickens
  • Keepers who enjoy active ornamental birds
  • Small coops with secure runs
  • Flocks focused on beauty instead of egg production

On the other hand, a different breed may suit you better if you want a calm lap-style chicken, a broody hen, or a high-production layer. Overall, Silver Sebrights shine when customers want a small, elegant, active show bantam with historic appeal.

Is the Silver Sebright Bantam Chicken Right for Your Flock?

Choose Silver Sebright Bantam chickens if you want:

  • A true bantam with no standard-size version
  • A silver-laced ornamental chicken
  • A small bird with strong exhibition appeal
  • A clean-legged bantam with a rose comb
  • A historic English breed developed by Sir John Sebright
  • A unique rooster type without long sickle feathers
  • A bantam for 4-H, showing, or hobby breeding
  • A bird that stands out in a small ornamental flock

However, consider another breed if you want steady egg production, broody hens, or an especially calm pet chicken. In short, Silver Sebrights fit best with customers who value beauty, rarity, true bantam type, and poultry exhibition history.

Care Notes for Silver Sebright Bantams

Silver Sebrights need the same basic care as other chicks, with extra attention to their small size and active nature. Since bantams are more vulnerable to predators, safe housing matters from the start.

For best results, provide:

  • A secure, predator-resistant coop
  • A covered or well-fenced run
  • Clean, dry bedding
  • Good ventilation
  • Age-appropriate chick feed
  • Fresh water at all times
  • Roosts suited to small bantams
  • Protection from drafts, extreme heat, and wet weather

Cackle’s true bantam guide notes that Sebright chicks can be delicate and may require extra care early on. However, mature Sebrights are active, hardy, and capable fliers.

Breed History and Preservation

The Sebright Bantam traces back to England and the work of Sir John Sebright, who spent years developing a small, laced, true bantam breed. The result became one of the most recognizable exhibition bantams in poultry history.

Silver and Golden are the two classic Sebright color patterns. Both are laced, clean-legged, rose-combed true bantams with the breed’s unusual hen-feathered male trait. Cackle Hatchery’s true bantam guide notes that Sebrights come in silver and golden laced patterns and remain one of the old true bantam breeds from England.

For customers who enjoy heritage-style exhibition poultry, Silver Sebrights offer more than a pretty pattern. They bring together breed history, true bantam type, detailed lacing, and a unique rooster feather structure that sets them apart from nearly every other chicken breed.

Recognition and Availability

Silver Sebrights have a long-standing place in poultry exhibition. The breed was admitted into the American Poultry Association Standard of Perfection in 1874, according to the original Cackle Hatchery® description.

Cackle Hatchery® lists Silver Sebright Bantams as baby chicks only, with no sexing available and seasonal shipping from early February through mid-August. Current hatch dates and estimated delivery windows can change throughout the season, so customers should check Cackle’s Chicken Availability Chart before ordering.

In addition, customers who enjoy Sebrights may want to review the Sebright Bantam Surplus Special when available.

What is a Silver Sebright Bantam chicken?

A Silver Sebright Bantam chicken is a small true bantam with silver-and-black laced feathering, clean legs, a rose comb, active personality, and strong ornamental or exhibition appeal.

Are Silver Sebright Bantams true bantams?

Yes. Sebrights are true bantams, meaning they do not have a standard-size counterpart. They were developed as a small bantam breed rather than miniaturized from a larger chicken.

What makes Sebright roosters unique?

Sebright roosters are hen-feathered. That means they do not have the long sickle tail feathers or pointed hackle and saddle feathers that most roosters have.

What color eggs do Silver Sebright Bantams lay?

Silver Sebright hens may lay small cream or tinted bantam-sized eggs. However, customers should choose this breed mainly for ornamental and exhibition value rather than egg production.

Are Silver Sebright Bantams good egg layers?

No. Silver Sebrights are not strong production layers. Cackle’s true bantam guide describes Sebright hens as poor layers with tinted eggs.

Are Silver Sebright Bantams broody?

Sebright hens seldom brood, according to Cackle’s true bantam guide. Customers who mainly want a broody mother hen may prefer breeds such as Silkies or Cochin Bantams.

Are Silver Sebright Bantams friendly?

They can become enjoyable birds with regular calm handling, but they are usually active and alert rather than extremely docile. They work best for customers who enjoy lively ornamental bantams.

Are Silver Sebright Bantams good for beginners?

They can work for beginners who are prepared for small, active bantams and can provide secure housing. However, new keepers should know that Sebright chicks may need extra care early on.

Are Silver Sebright Bantams good for children or 4-H?

Yes, they can be good for 4-H or youth poultry projects when children receive guidance. Their small size, true bantam status, and showy lacing make them appealing exhibition birds.

Are Silver Sebright Bantams good for free range?

They can enjoy supervised outdoor time, but a protected run is usually safer than open free range. Their small size and flying ability make predator protection especially important.

Are Silver Sebright Bantams cold hardy?

Mature Sebrights can handle cool weather with a dry, draft-free coop and good ventilation. However, like all small bantams, they need protection from wet bedding, harsh wind, and extreme cold.

Are Silver Sebright Bantams heat tolerant?

They can do well in warm weather when keepers provide shade, ventilation, and cool clean water. During extreme heat, small bantams need close attention because they can stress quickly.

How big do Silver Sebright Bantams get?

I ordered 25 sebrights in the spring of 2025. I purchased them with the intention of starting a breeding flock for showing as I was unable to find any available local to me. My review is based upon how my birds from Cackle have matured out in comparison to the APA Standard of Perfection.

    Pros:
    – Fairly solid and consistent lacing, although a few birds had broken lacing on secondaries
    – Fairly well body shape on most birds, however obviously not as balanced as show quality birds
    – Nice rosecombs with points on roosters. I did not have any single comb cockerels in my order.
    – Good personalities
    – Hearty bloodlines, they have held up well to both hot (110+) and cold (-4 with windchill) days without any problem

    Cons:
    – Many, many, many pink toes. I removed 3/4 of the chicks from the breeding program within the first month due to pink toes
    – A few hens with red combs versus mulberry combs
    – Some roosters popping up with almost solid black hackle and saddle feathers
    – Sooty tail feathers on multiple roosters

All in all, if you are wanting to show sebrights, starting with hatchery stock obviously puts you behind but it is possible to do with consistent work and heavy culling. If you are wanting flashy, pretty birds for your yard, these are absolutely them!

I give them 5 stars because for hatchery quality birds, they are perfect! I do highly recommend!

I received Silver Sebright chicks at the beginning of August. The chicks are almost fully feathered out and I had 100% success raising them with a group of Porcelain D’Uccle and Spangled OEG Bantam. Seems its almost 50% rooster to pullet ratio if I am guessing gender at this time. One “rooster” has a single comb instead of a rosecomb. One chick still has chick feathers on its head and is smaller than the rest of the group. They are curious and friendly and usually the first ones to approach when I bring them treats. They are so tame they can easily be picked up.

  3. Tyler McCaughn

Out of all the birds that I purchased this year, these are my favorites. Small & docile birds with a striking appearance. When I realized that I had more than I needed, there were people lining up to adopt them from my flock. I don’t remember losing any of these when they arrived. Just like the goldens, I’ll purchase again.

  4. Keshka Kotera

Cute and perky. They have a fun personality and are quite curious about what you are doing. The pattern is very distinct and they stand out looking very pretty.

  5. Whittni (@WhitsFlock)

We ordered 5 and received 6. 3 were roosters and were rehomed. Of the 3 pullets we kept, 2 passed away prior to lay (within a couple weeks of each other). They seemed like healthy rambunctious new chicks, but did not survive well enough to become adults. They were human friendly, but 1 rooster was especially spooky around people. I don’t recommend sebrights, they just aren’t a hardy breed, and even if they do make it–they only live 8 years compared to an Old English Bantam who can make it to 15 (nearly double). Our chicks were vaccinated and raised in a great setup. No parasite or predators impacted mortality of the sebrights.

  6. Curtis Hawn

Ordered ten of these last year. They are by far some of the prettiest bantams to raise. All of them thrived. Ordering more this year to add to my flock. If you love bantams you will not be disappointed. Their coloring and lacing is absolutely stunning. Great job cackle.

  7. leonel

  8. Spiderbunny in PR

    Thanks

Everything went perfectly. We ordered 28 chicks from different varieties & got 35 total. Shipped on May 26 & got here on the 28th. I was so worried the post office would mess things up. They never called me but thanks to Cackle’s system, I got the tracking # & monitored the shipment. They all arrived perfectly fine chirping like crazy & moving around. I followed their instructions & all were doing great til Saturday when 1 of the porcelain duccles died overnight. For such a long journey I am extremely & pleasantly surprised. We ordered 5 of these silver sebrights & got 2 extra. Very pleased with the way the company works. Thank you so much.Highly recommend.

  9. Eric

    Great purchase

We ten silver sebrights this August, and discovered 12 in the box! All were fine, except one which was listless and didn’t recover. Now we have eleven wonderful little critters. The roosters seem to get along (so far) which is nice. Thanks!

  10. Sierra

Very Happy 1st Time Chick Mom

  11. Reggie

    Chicks welcome home

Thank you for sending a great looking bunch of CHICKS. I ordered 5 and you sent us 8. They all arrived alive, the pad that you placed inside for heat was still warm. The Post Office call first thing in the morning. My daughter is very happy, hopefully there is a 4H champion in there somewhere!! Will send pictures if so. THANK YOU AGAIN!

  12. Kristi, Virginia July 2013

    Our new chicks

Our new babies arrived yesterday. I want to commend you. They arrived carefully packaged with the somewhat larger chicks in a separate space and all looking spry and safe. I had sworn I would never order from a hatchery again after an absolutely HORRIBLE experience one time with another hatchery. If you order less than 25 they put in extra chicks for warmth during shipping. i didn’t know that having never ordered them before and I ordered 20 banties. Some person put in extra-regular-size chicks (leghorns) with the banties and seven of my little banties were crushed in transit. Nevertheless, nothing would bring back those poor little chicks and I knew I would never do business with them again. When we have occasion to order chicks again, you can be assured it will be from Cackle Hatchery.

    Attn: cackle-Extremely Happy Customer

Just a quick note to thank you for my surprise package and to let you know how much I enjoyed visiting there on Tuesday. All the babies in the surprise package arrived alive and are growing like weeds. The three little turkeys and silver Sebright chicks I when I visited made the trip home with us just fine and are doing great. I told Don we would have to make a “Cackle visit” a routine part of our trips north from now on. Thanks Again!!!

My praise to Cackle Hatchery and their staff

Good Evening, I just received my order of chicks from Cackle Hatchery today. I want to extend my sincere praise to your company and staff. My chicks arrived healthy and without a single casualty!!! I have ordered from other hatcheries in the past and have waited anxiously for my chicks to arrive only to be disappointed by dead or nearly dead chicks. Your chicks are the best I have ever received from a hatchery. Although, I am experienced enough to be able to tell which breeds are which, I appreciated the fact that your staff took the time to mark similar breeds. Again, thank you to your staff, They won me over as a customer. I will be sure to tell all of my fellow chicken fanciers how impressed I am with Cackle Hatchery.

  15. Jeffrey April 2014

    Chicks Arrived

I ordered 15 Sebright chicks, you placed 18 of them in the box. All arrived alive and healthy, they were packed very well. I received three calls from the Post Office to come and get them, they were driving the staff nuts with all the noise. Thank you very much.

  16. Sandy Wisconsin May 2011
