Description

Splash Rosecomb Bantam Chicken

Breed History and Origin

When it comes to true miniature chickens, Cackle Hatchery® is proud to offer the Splash Rosecomb Bantam. This variety follows the long-established Rosecomb Bantam line, a true bantam breed most likely originating from England and developed specifically for exhibition purposes. While this Splash variety is not currently recognized by the APA, it carries the same refined structure and characteristics expected of Rosecomb Bantams. Cackle Hatchery® has been developing its own bloodline or strain of pure Rosecomb Bantams since 1979, focusing on consistency in type, size, and coloration.

Appearance and Breed Characteristics

The Splash Rosecomb Bantam is a compact, true bantam with no large fowl counterpart, bred for its small size and sharp appearance. Mature roosters typically weigh around 26 ounces and hens around 22 ounces, with pullets and cockerels slightly smaller. This variety features a white base feather color with irregular black or blue splashing throughout, giving each bird a unique pattern. Like all Rosecombs, it has a low, broad rose comb, large white earlobes, clean legs, and an upright, alert stance. These features combine to create a polished and eye-catching bird suited for exhibition.

Egg Production and Broodiness

The Splash Rosecomb Bantam is not bred for production and is considered a poor layer. Hens produce small cream or tinted bantam-sized eggs on a limited basis. However, they are known to be setters and will go broody, which can be useful for hatching small clutches. Fertility generally ranges from 40–55%, and a mating ratio of approximately nine females to one male is recommended for breeding.

Temperament and Backyard Suitability

This breed is active and alert, with a lively temperament typical of true bantams. While not aggressive, they are more energetic than many standard-sized backyard breeds and require a secure environment due to their small size and vulnerability to predators. They adapt well to smaller spaces but benefit from proper housing and protection. A roost height of 2 to 6 feet is ideal, allowing them to perch comfortably.

Production Positioning and Exhibition Use

The Splash Rosecomb Bantam is strictly an ornamental and exhibition bird, not intended for egg or meat production. Its primary value lies in its miniature size, unique splash coloration, and adherence to Rosecomb type. This makes it a strong choice for poultry enthusiasts and exhibitors looking for a distinctive bantam to showcase.

Breeding Note / Color Note

Splash coloration can vary significantly between birds, and breeding for consistent patterning requires careful selection. When working with Splash Rosecomb Bantams, attention should also be given to maintaining proper comb shape, body structure, and overall balance to meet exhibition expectations.

FAQ

What is a Splash Rosecomb chicken?
A Splash Rosecomb is a color variation of the Rosecomb breed, featuring a pale bluish-white base with irregular darker blue or gray splashes. Each bird’s pattern is unique, making them especially popular for ornamental flocks and exhibition.

How many eggs do Splash Rosecomb chickens lay per year?
Splash Rosecombs are light layers, typically producing around 50–100 small white eggs per year. They are not bred for production and should be considered ornamental first.

Are Splash Rosecomb chickens good for backyard flocks?
They can do well in backyard settings, especially for keepers looking for small, decorative birds. However, their small size makes them more vulnerable to predators, so secure housing is important.

Are Splash Rosecomb chickens friendly or aggressive?
They are generally active and alert rather than overly docile. While not aggressive, they can be more flighty and independent compared to heavier, more laid-back breeds.

Do Splash Rosecomb chickens go broody?
Broodiness is uncommon in Rosecombs. They are not reliable setters, so hatching typically requires an incubator or a broody hen of another breed.

    very pretty bantam

The splash bantam is a nice small size and the color, pale powder blue with dark gray splash and bright red comb, is beautiful !! Easy to feed and keep, however outside areas must be covered with over head fencing as they are active flyers. I really enjoy this bantam.

    Chicks arrived safely!

Just a note to let you know that all is well with my order. I was impressed with the packaging that you had the chicks in. It was very secure and the “nest” kept them well protected from bumps and the cold. This was my first time ordering any type of animal through the mail and I admit I had concerns about this, especially since my order was all bantam chicks. But all peeps were healthy and alert and adjusted to the brooder no problems. Also since this is my first try at chickens I appreciated the care sheet that came with the birds. I would definitely recommend your hatchery to anyone interested in poultry. You handled my small order promptly and exactly as stated on your website.
