Description

The Silver Spangled Hamburg is a Dutch breed and not of German origin. The spangled variety was evolved in England and admitted into the American Standard of Perfection in 1874. Our Silver Spangled Hamburgs are a combination of beauty and utility. These birds with symmetrical body, graceful carriage and attractive color have made them a very popular exhibition variety. Notable features: large rose comb and large round white ear lobes. They are very active, good flyers and do not do well in confinement.

I ordered 5 of these – all arrived very healthy and they’re now going on 12 weeks old, and I absolutely love them!

They are not the easiest birds I’ve run into, but if you’re into a little more intermediary level poultry-keeping they will make a great addition to your flock.
They are extremely active, and more than a little bit flighty, so they are better suited for free-range setups than for being cooped in a run up all day.

That said, mine have split their time between foraging on acres and acres in a rural setting, and the suburban backyard of my primary residence, and they do great in both settings, so they don’t require that much space to rummage around on. They are very active foragers, so they are great at keeping my back lawn clear of grubs and other nasty bugs! They also generally go great with my other birds (various chicken, turkey and guinea fowl breeds).

They are better for in cold weather settings, so if you (like I) live in hotter climates (I live in inland Southern California), make sure you have ample shade, hydration and dust bathing opportunities available – despite their usually active nature, they are among the first in my flock to tap out and take a siesta in the afternoon heat. They do tend to make that up, and then some, when it cools down in the evenings though, so a word of warning if you plan on keeping them in a coop/run overnight: it might be worth leaving them out a little longer than your other birds if you sport a mixed flock – mine were upsetting some of my more docile birdies trying to settle down for the night until I added a little timed hatch that lets them enter the enclosure a little later than the rest. Since then though, there has been only joy and harmony, and my lawn is entirely free of ticks, much thanks to these guys!

    Crazy Chicken Girl

I ordered 3 SSH and got 4. One was a boy the way I wanted it, and the other three were girls. One of the roosts fell on Dagger, that’s the boy’s name, and he broke his leg. The girls are great, no losses! I hope Dagger will be able to walk again. They are all about four months old now. Can’t wait to see eggs! Thanks Cackle!

This is my 3rd order from Cackle but my 1st order of silver spangled chicks. I received 2 extra and they are all very healthy. I am surprised to find these silver spangled hamburgs are the most friendly chicks to date! More inquisitive and confident than my Wyandottes, Barred Rocks, Lavenders and French maran chicks. Silver Spangles are Adorable!

Honestly, they are my favorite.I have four Silver Spangled. I also have Plymouth Barred Rock, Easter Eggers, F2 Olive Eggers, and Black Australorps. My male rooster(2 are silver spangled)is truly my knight and shining armour. They both eat from my hand. My other rooster(F2) is not so nice and every time, my main Silver Spangled (2nd in command) comes to my rescue. My little ladies are just the sweetest even though they are quite flighty. They’re so beautiful. I wish I could have more.

Beautiful birds. I have purchased from this hatchery a few times now. I lost one of these in shipping (first time that happened) but they put extra of another breed. I call these my dalmation chicks.

Always dreamed of having Hamburgs and finally got them. Definitely smaller than other chicks so it would probably be best to keep them in a separate brooder even though I didn’t. Ordered three and got four. One died at a day old and 2 of the remaining three were roosters. They fly really well and are more alert than my other breeds. Great looking bird!

    Siver Spangled Hamburgs

The Silver Spangled Hamburgs we ordered from Cackle Hatchery are excellent chickens. They are a smaller breed. We ended up with all hens which is fine. They hang with the other chickens outside and are really alert and fast. Beautiful birds. Everyone that sees them wants to know if they are for sale.

These are great little companion chickens, hens and roosters alike. The ones I received are thriving and I love them. They are great FFA chickens also.

    Not pleased

I ordered 5 silver spangled hamburgs and out of the 5, 3 were roosters and one of my hens died from a disease

    Great bird!

    Pastured raised

Beautiful bird to add to your flock! They get along well with other breeds. They are a little smaller but do well in cold or hot conditions.

All arrived alive though 5 were small and weaker than the rest never caught up and all 5 died before they were 4 weeks. The hens that made it are very strong I think too much in breeding am going to try to find a roosted unrelated. Thank you

Thank you so much for your attention to how you raise and ship chickens. It is MUCH appreciated. Next year when we get ourselves better situated I am sure there will be a substantial order coming from us.

My praise to Cackle Hatchery and their staff

Good Evening, I just received my order of chicks from Cackle Hatchery today. I want to extend my sincere praise to your company and staff. My chicks arrived healthy and without a single casualty!!! I have ordered from other hatcheries in the past and have waited anxiously for my chicks to arrive only to be disappointed by dead or nearly dead chicks. Your chicks are the best I have ever received from a hatchery. Although, I am experienced enough to be able to tell which breeds are which, I appreciated the fact that your staff took the time to mark similar breeds. Again, thank you to your staff, They won me over as a customer. I will be sure to tell all of my fellow chicken fanciers how impressed I am with Cackle Hatchery.

    Chick Order

Just wanted to let you and Jeff know how pleased I am with the Red Jungle Fowl and the Silver Spangled Hamburg chicks you sent…They arrived right on time, in great shape and are continuing to thrive. Thanks, also for the two extras you sent…I’ll be ordering again when I find myself in a fowl mood.
