Description
Royal Palm Turkey
Breed Overview and Origin
The Royal Palm Turkey is a rare heritage turkey known for its beautiful white plumage trimmed in black, smaller heritage size, natural breeding ability, and farm usefulness. If you want an eye-catching turkey for a backyard flock, homestead, exhibition pen, or small family farm, this variety is a strong choice.
Royal Palms were admitted into the American Standard of Perfection in 1977. Cackle Hatchery® lists this variety with Watch status through The Livestock Conservancy and notes that its poultry breeding farm has developed a pure Royal Palm Turkey bloodline since 1976.
Cackle Hatchery® offers Royal Palm Turkey poults as part of its heritage turkey lineup.
Appearance and Characteristics
Royal Palms are one of the most visually striking turkey varieties. Their bright white feathers are trimmed in black, giving them a clean, ornamental pattern that stands out in a flock.
This variety is considered smaller than many other heritage turkeys. Because of that lighter size, Royal Palms are often especially appealing for customers who want a beautiful heritage turkey without raising one of the largest traditional varieties.
Cackle’s blog Heritage Turkey Spotlight — Royal Palm, Ideal for Small Families describes the Royal Palm as a lightweight turkey with stunning white plumage trimmed in black. The article also notes that similar black-laced white turkey patterns have been raised in Europe since the 1700s.
Rare Heritage Turkey Value
This variety belongs in Cackle’s Heritage Turkeys category. Heritage turkeys are a good choice for customers who want active birds with traditional farm traits, natural reproduction, and long-term flock value.
Royal Palms are especially useful for customers who want a smaller heritage turkey with strong ornamental appeal. They are capable of breeding naturally, and hens may go broody.
Cackle’s Turkey Breeds List Comparison Chart lists Royal Palms as active birds used for laying eggs and exhibition, with APA recognition, Watch status through The Livestock Conservancy, a suggested mating ratio of 7 females to 1 male, and a roost height of 2+ feet.
Royal Palm Turkey vs Larger Heritage Turkeys
Royal Palms are generally smaller than many other heritage turkey varieties. That makes them a good option for customers who want heritage beauty, natural reproduction, and farm usefulness, but do not necessarily want one of the largest meat-focused turkeys.
Choose Royal Palm if you want a striking ornamental turkey, a smaller heritage bird, and a useful farm forager. Choose larger heritage varieties such as Bourbon Red Turkey, Bronze Heritage Standard Turkey, or Narragansett Turkey if you want a larger bird with stronger meat emphasis.
Customers who are still comparing breeds can use Cackle’s Turkey Breeds List Comparison Chart to compare temperament, purpose, recognition, roost height, and conservation status.
Royal Palm Turkey vs Broad Breasted Turkeys
This rare heritage variety is very different from broad breasted production turkeys.
Choose Royal Palm if you want a naturally breeding, active, attractive turkey for a backyard, homestead, or exhibition setting. Choose a broad breasted turkey if your main goal is fast meat production and a larger commercial-style carcass.
Cackle’s Heritage Turkeys category explains that heritage turkeys mate naturally, live long lives, and are biologically suited for range where they can forage for additional food.
Farm Use and Insect Reduction
Royal Palms fend for themselves well when given proper space, shelter, and management. They are also useful around the farm for insect reduction, which makes them a practical choice beyond their ornamental appearance.
Because they are active birds, they should have secure nighttime housing, predator protection, clean water, proper turkey feed, roosting space, and room to move. Their smaller heritage size can make them a good fit for customers who want a manageable farm turkey with visual appeal.
For customers new to poults, Cackle’s How to Brood Turkey Poults and Starve-Out in Turkey Poults are helpful care resources to read before arrival.
Meat, Eggs, and Exhibition Value
Royal Palms are often valued most for exhibition, beauty, insect control, and small-farm usefulness. They can lay seasonal eggs, but customers should not think of turkeys as high-production egg birds.
Cackle’s turkey comparison chart lists Royal Palms for laying eggs and exhibition, while rating egg production as poor compared with high-laying poultry.
For realistic turkey egg expectations, Cackle’s How Many Eggs Does a Turkey Lay? is a useful internal resource.
Breeding and Broodiness
Royal Palms are capable of breeding naturally and may go broody. This makes them a strong option for customers who want a sustainable heritage turkey flock rather than a broad breasted production flock.
If customers plan to keep breeding groups, they should pay attention to male-to-female ratios, bird condition, nutrition, and overall flock health. Cackle’s Turkey Mating Ratio for Good Fertility is the best internal resource to place here for customers planning breeding pens.
Keeping Turkeys With Chickens
Some customers want to raise turkeys and chickens together. This can work in some setups, but customers should understand blackhead disease risk before mixing flocks.
Cackle’s Keeping Turkeys With Chickens is a helpful internal resource for mixed poultry planning. For deeper disease information, customers should also read Blackhead in Turkeys Is a Serious Disease.
These links fit naturally in the care section because many backyard poultry keepers ask whether turkeys can live with chickens.
Sexing Turkey Poults
Turkey poults can be difficult to sex when young. Customers should not expect sexing to be as simple as it is with many chicken breeds.
Cackle’s Sexing Turkey Poults and Guinea Keets is a useful internal resource for customers who want to understand sexing expectations before ordering.
Shipping Note
Cackle Hatchery® cannot ship turkeys to Hawaii. Keep this shipping note clear on the product page so customers can plan before ordering.
Availability changes by hatch date and season. Customers should check the Royal Palm Turkey product page and Cackle’s Availability Chart before placing an order.
Is This Breed Right for Your Flock?
Choose this variety if you want:
A rare heritage turkey
A smaller heritage turkey option
A beautiful white-and-black color pattern
A naturally breeding turkey breed
A broody heritage hen
A useful farm bird for insect reduction
A turkey admitted to the Standard in 1977
A strong exhibition and ornamental variety
A manageable option for small families
A breed to compare with other rare heritage turkeys
Overall, this is a great choice if you want a beautiful, smaller heritage turkey with natural breeding ability, broodiness, insect-control value, and strong ornamental appeal. It is not the best fit for customers who want the fastest-growing broad breasted meat turkey, but it is excellent for small farms, backyard flocks, homesteads, exhibition-minded customers, and families wanting a manageable heritage bird.
Customers still comparing turkey breeds can use Cackle’s Turkeys for Sale, Heritage Turkeys, or Turkey Breeds List Comparison Chart.
Breed History and Preservation
Royal Palms are one of the most ornamental heritage turkey varieties. Their black-laced white color pattern has a long background, with similar turkey patterns raised in Europe since the 1700s under names such as black-laced white, pied, or Crollwitzer. In the United States, turkeys with the palm pattern appeared in the 1920s in a mixed flock near Lake Worth, Florida.
The breed was admitted into the American Standard of Perfection in 1977. Cackle Hatchery® has developed its Royal Palm bloodline since 1976, giving customers access to a rare heritage turkey with decades of hatchery breeding history.
Today, this variety remains important for customers who value rare poultry, attractive farm birds, natural reproduction, and heritage turkey preservation.

I bought these turkeys because a friend of mine has a Royal Palm. I bought them because they are so pretty. We don’t have many pets. Every animal has a purpose on a homestead. So eventually when they are old enough, they will be egg layers. They are very friendly. They eat out of my hand. Much more mellow than the chickens!

They have grown fast and are doing great in our turkey pasture with 60 Bourbon Reds and 10 Narragansetts. We are looking forward to a great processing time for Thanksgiving sales this year with some large meaty birds.

Our order of 5 arrived on time and healthy. These are the sweetest birds I have ever raised. My Tom will eat out of my hand and follows us around the ranch like a dog. Cackle hatchery is the best we have ever dealt with .

I have a mix of Royal Palms and Bourbon Red turkeys that live with my bantam chickens. Everyone gets along well. The Royal Palms are friendly, will come when they are called, are not aggressive, will respond when I make turkey sounds at them, and will tolerate me petting/hugging them. I can easily pick them up if needed for an exam. They will do a lot for a blueberry. ☺ I have raised a variety of birds over the years, and turkeys are my favorite. I would reorder Royal Palms and Bourbon Reds again.

I highly recommend these turkeys
We received our heritage turkey mix that included Royal Palm, Black Spanish and Bourbon turkeys last July. They arrived healthy with an extra thrown in. They have already hatched their first brood. We couldn’t be more pleased with our purchase from Cackle Hatchery.

Great Palms
It’s December, I received my Royal Palm pullet in June. I”ve raised Palms before and already had two from another hatchery to put with the one’s I received from you. I have to say, yours are the best, they have great marking and a awesome temperament. Thanks for the great birds.

Cackle Hatchery
Just wonder if your Standard Bronze and Slate turkeys are similiar in temperament as the Royal Palms? We’ve had your Royal Palms for about 5 years now and I’ve never had to worry about turning my back on the Tom we kept. Thanks

Thank You
I wanted to let you know that I received my order on Friday. My 75+ chickens and 8+turkeys(thanks for the extras!) all arrived healthy and vigorous. I followed your directions and did not lose a single one to shipping stress. I raise chickens every year, but this is my first year using your hatchery, and also the first year I have not lost any chickens in the first four days:) Your prices are more affordable than my old hatchery, and your birds are more vibrant on arrival. I look forward to doing business with you again next spring!

Thanks!
Just wanted to say thank you. Y’all shipped out my order this past Monday and I was able to pick the chicks, poults and goslings up at the post office Tuesday before noon- a full day earlier than expected! Everyone was happy and healthy and all have been thriving this week. I’ve always bought chickens locally and was skeptical going about ordering poultry through the mail, but it seemed that was the only way to go given that’s wanted some goslings and poults and it was late in the year, Well, I am very happy to say that all of my concerns were for nothing. I could not be more pleased with your customer service department, the health of our new flock and the entire Cackle “family” that play a part. I’ll definitely be a repeat customer. Thank again for everything from a grateful dad and an exceptionally excited 6 year old daughter. All the best

A Very Satisfied Customer
Just wanted you to see your beautiful chics and turkeys that arrived ALL ALIVE and well. I’ve purchased from various hatcheries over the years and you are by far the BEST of the BEST. You called to let me know when my chics would be arriving, you even called me at work so I could pick the chics up on the way home. You always slip in an extra or so for the just in case issues. You are kind enough to call when hatches weren’t quite ready. You are able to add to my order the last minute, with beautiful stock- not sloppy seconds. Your employees are polite and helpful on the phone and the internet. All in all, you are my company for purchasing poultry always.
Hans, South Carolina May 2011 –
Thanks
Your shipment of chicks arrived this morning. All birds are healthy and in great condition. They were hungry and went for feed and water right away as if they knew the place all along, Again thanks for a pleasant experience doing business with you. I will always contact you for any future purchases first!
