Description

Blue Old English Bantam Chicken

Breed History and Origin

When it comes to bantam chickens, the breeders at Cackle Hatchery® offer a wide range of Old English varieties, including the Blue Old English Bantam. This breed traces back to traditional European game fowl and has been refined into a true bantam for exhibition purposes. The Blue variety was recognized by the American Standard of Perfection in 1976, and it continues to be a popular choice for poultry shows. Cackle Hatchery® has been developing its own bloodline or strain of pure Blue Old English Game Bantams since 1982, focusing on maintaining proper type, feather quality, and consistent coloration.

Appearance and Breed Characteristics

The Blue Old English Bantam is known for its sleek, tight feathering with a soft blue-gray coloration that gives the bird a refined and uniform appearance. As part of the Game Bantam (All Colors) class, it carries a proud, upright stance with a well-balanced body and alert expression typical of Old English types. Mature roosters typically weigh around 24 ounces and hens around 22 ounces, with pullets and cockerels slightly smaller. Their clean lines and even coloring make them especially attractive in exhibition settings.

Egg Production and Broodiness

This breed is not developed for egg production and is considered a poor layer. Hens produce small cream or tinted bantam-sized eggs on a limited basis. However, they are known to be setters, meaning hens will go broody and can hatch eggs successfully. Fertility typically ranges from 40–55%, with a recommended mating ratio of approximately nine females to one male.

Temperament and Backyard Suitability

The Blue Old English Bantam is active and alert but is often described as docile enough to make a good pet, even for families with children. With regular handling, they can become quite manageable. Their small size makes them suitable for backyard flocks with limited space, though they do benefit from secure housing. A roost height of 3 feet or higher works well for their active nature.

Production Positioning and Exhibition Use

The Blue Old English Bantam is best positioned as an ornamental and exhibition breed. It is not intended for egg or meat production but instead valued for its clean coloration, posture, and adherence to breed standards. This makes it a strong choice for poultry exhibitors and hobbyists looking for a classic bantam with show quality.

Breeding Note / Color Note

Blue coloration follows specific genetic patterns and does not breed true, meaning offspring may include blue, black, or splash variations. Understanding blue breeding is important when working with this variety. Selection should also focus on maintaining even color distribution, feather quality, and correct body type.
