Description
White Bearded Silkie Bantam Chicken
Breed Overview and Origin
The White Bearded Silkie Bantam chicken is an exhibition-type Silkie known for its fluffy white feathering, black skin, deep mulberry comb and wattles, full beard, five toes, and calm personality. If you want a small ornamental chicken that can work as a show bird, backyard pet, or broody mother hen, this classic Silkie variety is one of the best-known choices.
White was the first Silkie variety admitted to the American Standard of Perfection in 1874, according to the original Cackle Hatchery® description. That long show history makes White Bearded Silkies especially appealing to customers who want a traditional exhibition variety.
Silkies are among the most recognizable bantam chickens because they look so different from standard-feathered breeds. Their soft plumage gives them a fluffy, almost fur-like appearance, while their dark skin, feathered feet, and extra toes make them especially interesting for families and hobby keepers. Cackle’s Silkie category also notes that Cackle’s exhibition-type Silkie Bantams come from show-quality bloodlines bred to APA and ABA standards, with profuse beards, top crests, five toes, and walnut combs.
Because White Bearded Silkies are gentle and typically broody, they work well for families, 4-H exhibitors, backyard keepers, and small-flock owners who want a beautiful bantam with useful mothering instincts.
Appearance and Characteristics
White Bearded Silkies have fluffy white feathers that contrast beautifully with their black skin and deep mulberry comb and wattles. Their full beard adds a rounded, soft facial appearance, while their crest gives them the classic Silkie look customers love.
In addition, Silkies have several unusual breed traits. They have feathered legs, five toes, dark skin, and soft feathers that do not lie flat like regular chicken feathers. Cackle Hatchery’s article 5 Chicken Breeds that Have 5 Toes explains that most chickens have four toes, while Silkies are one of the breeds known for five toes.
Since White Bearded Silkies have soft feathering and feathered feet, they need clean, dry housing. Mud, wet bedding, and rough ground can soil or damage their foot feathers. Therefore, a dry coop, well-drained run, and clean bedding will help keep them comfortable and attractive.
White plumage also shows dirt more easily than darker colors. As a result, customers who want birds for exhibition should pay extra attention to dry bedding, clean pens, and protected runs.
White Bearded Silkie vs Other Silkie Bantams: How to Choose
White Bearded Silkies share the same calm temperament, fluffy feathering, five toes, and broody instinct as other Silkie Bantams. The main difference is color and show preference.
Choose White Bearded Silkie Bantam if you want a classic exhibition-type Silkie with fluffy white plumage, black skin, a full beard, strong show history, and excellent pet potential.
Choose Splash Silkie Bantam chickens if you prefer a white or pale blue bird with irregular darker markings. Cackle notes that Splash Bearded Silkies are a newer recognized Silkie color and that the Splash variety entered the Standard later than the older Silkie varieties.
Choose Silkie Bantam Special if you like several Silkie colors and do not need one exact variety. Cackle lists this special as a hatchery-choice Silkie assortment with docile temperament, broody behavior, ornamental/exhibition purpose, and cream or tinted bantam-sized eggs.
For customers comparing all available Silkie options, the Silkie Chickens for Sale category is the best place to review Cackle’s current color varieties. Cackle notes that Silkie Bantams are available in several colors and typically hatch and ship weekly from February through August.
Egg Production and Utility
White Bearded Silkie Bantams serve mainly as ornamental, pet, broody, and exhibition chickens. Therefore, customers should choose them for temperament, beauty, small size, and mothering instinct rather than heavy egg production.
Hens may lay small cream or tinted bantam-sized eggs. However, Silkies are not production layers, and their eggs will be smaller than standard-size chicken eggs. Cackle’s Silkie Bantam Special lists Silkie Bantams as ornamental/exhibition birds with small cream or tinted eggs, docile temperament, and broody behavior.
These birds do not serve as meat chickens either. Instead, their value comes from their gentle behavior, fluffy appearance, exhibition type, broody instinct, pet appeal, and small-flock enjoyment.
Temperament and Suitability
White Bearded Silkies are calm, tame, and easy to enjoy. Their gentle nature makes them outstanding backyard pets, especially for customers who want a small chicken that feels more like a companion bird than a production breed.
In addition, Silkie hens are famous for broodiness. Cackle’s Silkie breed spotlight notes that Silkies are known for persistent broodiness and conscientious mothering instincts, which makes them useful for hatching eggs from rare or non-broody poultry.
This variety can work well for:
- Families with children
- Backyard pet flocks
- Bantam hobby flocks
- 4-H and youth poultry projects
- Poultry exhibitors
- Keepers who want broody mother hens
- Small coops or protected runs
- Flocks with other gentle bantams
On the other hand, a different breed may suit you better if you want a heavy egg layer, a meat bird, or a rugged free-range chicken. Overall, White Bearded Silkies shine when customers want a calm, fluffy, people-friendly bantam with strong exhibition and broody potential.
Is the White Bearded Silkie Bantam Chicken Right for Your Flock?
Choose White Bearded Silkie Bantam chickens if you want:
- A classic exhibition-type Silkie
- A small ornamental bantam
- A white Silkie with black skin
- A bird with a full beard and top crest
- A bantam for pets, exhibition, or 4-H
- A hen with strong broody mothering potential
- A chicken breed with five toes
- A calm bird for a protected backyard flock
- A historic Silkie variety admitted to the Standard in 1874
However, consider another breed if you want large eggs, high production, strong flight ability, or a chicken for rough outdoor conditions. In short, White Bearded Silkies fit best with customers who value temperament, beauty, broodiness, and classic Silkie character.
Care Notes for Silkies
White Bearded Silkies need the same basic care as other chicks, plus extra attention to their feather type, foot feathering, and smaller bantam size. Since their feathers are soft rather than slick and weather-shedding, they need protection from wet, muddy, or harsh conditions.
For best results, provide:
- A dry, draft-free coop
- Clean bedding
- Good ventilation
- A predator-safe run
- Dry footing around feeders and waterers
- Low, easy-to-reach roosts
- Protection from heavy rain and mud
- Regular checks for mud buildup on foot feathers
In addition, Silkies cannot fly as well as many other chickens, and their crest or beard may limit vision in some birds. For that reason, secure housing and predator protection matter more than open free range.
Breed History and Preservation
Silkies have a long and fascinating history. Cackle Hatchery’s Silkie breed spotlight explains that Marco Polo mentioned chickens with fur-like feathers and black skin in the 13th century, and Silkies have remained one of the most beloved ornamental breeds ever since.
White Silkies carry special historical importance because they were the first Silkie variety admitted to the American Standard of Perfection in 1874, according to the original Cackle Hatchery® description. Over time, poultry breeders developed other Silkie color varieties, including black, blue, buff, splash, and paint.
Cackle Hatchery® has developed its pure Silkie Bantam bloodline since 1973, according to Cackle’s Silkie Bantam Special breed facts. That same Cackle resource lists Silkies as Feather Legged Bantams with ornamental/exhibition purpose, docile temperament, and broody behavior.
For customers who enjoy unusual poultry, White Bearded Silkies offer more than fluffy white feathers. They bring together historic exhibition value, gentle temperament, black skin, five toes, broodiness, and classic ornamental appeal.
Recognition and Availability
White Bearded Silkies have a long-standing place in poultry exhibition. According to the original Cackle Hatchery® description, White was the first Silkie variety admitted to the American Standard of Perfection in 1874.
Cackle’s Silkie category notes that Cackle’s exhibition-type Silkie Bantams come from show-quality bloodlines bred to APA and ABA standards. That category also states that Silkies hatch and deliver weekly from February through August, and customers may order early to improve their chance of receiving the variety they want.
Since Silkie availability can change during the season, customers should check the Chicken Availability Chart before ordering. In addition, customers who like multiple Silkie colors can compare the Silkie Bantam Special, which is Cackle’s assortment option for Silkie Bantam chicks.

Are White Bearded Silkies good mothers?
Yes. Silkie hens are well known for broodiness and mothering instinct. They may hatch eggs or help raise chicks from other breeds that are not typically broody.

Does Cackle Hatchery® offer other Silkie Bantams?

I purchased 10 silkie bantams almost a year ago, received 12. All survived except one. I ended up with 7 hens and 4 roosters. Unfortunately I had to part with the roosters but all 7 hens are doing well.

Happy healthy babies
This was our first time ordering our chicks online. We got the hatchery special 15 silkies and could not be more pleased with our order. We received 18 healthy happy chicks! The packaging is impressive and I was sure the 2 day journey not all would make it but after 24 hours all are still doing just as well. The care instructions included are a great touch along with the bonus stickers for the kids. We defiantly recommend crackle for future orders!

10 White Silkies
Order shipped on Monday and the 10 white silkies arrived in great shape first thing Wednesday morning in South Florida. We had a bit of a cold snap this week and I was concerned about the chicks getting chilled, but Cackle hatchery packed them nicely in a well insulated box with a heat pad and the chicks were warm and content in their journey south. They even through in a couple extras, very pleased with the chicks and the professional service.

Amazing birds
Picked up my white silkies at the hatchery today. The staff at Cackle is very friendly and helpful. From Cheryl in the ordering department to the young lady that waited on me in the store. The chicks made the 4 hour drive home in good shape. All chicks healthy and what I expected from the breed. I order 30 total chicks of two different breeds and I am pretty sure sure there were 37 chicks in the box. To hard to count because they are so peppy and energetic. No lethargic chicks and no off colored chicks. Looks like I have a new hatchery.

Silkie
I bought Silkies last summer. Bought 5 and 6 came. It was our first time owning chickens. My daughter who just turned 9 loves these chickens!! They all survived. And they have stole her heart. There ended up being 1 rooster and he chases her, pecks her, and bites her pants and she laughs every step of the way. They are adorable. The girls are very sweet. She is begging me to order more!! She is not an animal lover but she loves her chickens!!

My praise to Cackle Hatchery and their staff
Good Evening, I just received my order of chicks from Cackle Hatchery today. I want to extend my sincere praise to your company and staff. My chicks arrived healthy and without a single casualty!!! I have ordered from other hatcheries in the past and have waited anxiously for my chicks to arrive only to be disappointed by dead or nearly dead chicks. Your chicks are the best I have ever received from a hatchery. Although, I am experienced enough to be able to tell which breeds are which, I appreciated the fact that your staff took the time to mark similar breeds. Again, thank you to your staff, They won me over as a customer. I will be sure to tell all of my fellow chicken fanciers how impressed I am with Cackle Hatchery.

I just wanted to say thank you. I have always been very happy with the poultry I have received from you. I also want to thank you for going through the trouble to cancel my order. I have been ill and only yesterday learn it was rather serious. I hope it will be okay to place orders again with you in the future. I do hope to support your business again in the future by placing order and continuing making people happy locally and meeting new friends by providing breeds that aren’t available locally. Thanks, and good wishes to all at Cackle.

I am anxiously awaiting my chicks. I am so excited. It is my first time to have backyard chickens. I researched many hatcheries and found yours online. I was impressed and very much enjoyed your tutorial of the family business and history of the company. I also liked the videos of the different chicks and information given about the different varieties. I found that very helpful when choosing which varieties I wanted and would be best for us.
