Description

Indian Runner Duck (Fawn & White)

Breed Overview and Origin

The Fawn & White Indian Runner Duck is a lightweight, upright duck known for its long, sleek body, active foraging style, and strong egg production. If you want a duck that is entertaining, productive, and different from the usual waddling duck, the Runner is a great choice.

Runner ducks have a long history in Southeast Asia. Cackle Hatchery’s Heritage Breed Spotlight: Fawn & White Runner Duck notes that Runner ducks were known in the East Indies for at least 2,000 years and were valued as excellent layers that could be herded over long distances. The breed is often associated with Malaysia and the surrounding region.

The Fawn & White Runner entered the American Standard of Perfection in 1898. Cackle Hatchery® offers Fawn & White Runner Ducklings for customers who want a productive, active duck for eggs, foraging, backyard enjoyment, or exhibition.

Appearance and Characteristics

Fawn & White Runner Ducks have a long, narrow body and a very upright carriage. Their posture makes them easy to recognize because they stand more vertically than most duck breeds.

Unlike heavier ducks that waddle, Runner ducks move quickly and are often described as running. They are lightweight ducks, with drakes maturing around 4 to 4½ pounds and hens around 3½ to 4 pounds.

Their fawn-and-white coloring is one of the most popular Runner duck patterns. The soft fawn body color contrasts nicely with white markings, giving the breed a clean and classic appearance.

Indian Runner Duck vs Other Duck Breeds

Runner ducks look and behave differently from heavier duck breeds such as Pekins, Rouens, and Cayugas.

Choose Fawn & White Runner Ducks if you want an upright, lightweight, active duck that excels at foraging and egg production. Choose White Pekin Ducks if you want a larger, faster-growing duck for meat and pets. Choose Rouens or Cayugas if you prefer a heavier, calmer, more traditional pond duck.

Runners are especially enjoyable for customers who want movement and personality in the yard. However, they can startle easily, so calm handling and a secure setup help them settle into a flock.

Fawn & White Runner vs Hatchery Choice Runner Ducks

Fawn & White Runner Ducks are a specific Runner color variety. Cackle also offers Hatchery Choice Runner Ducklings, which may include Fawn & White and/or Black Runner Ducks, depending on hatch availability.

Choose Fawn & White Runner Ducks if you want this exact classic color pattern. Choose Hatchery Choice Runner Ducks if you like Runner ducks and are flexible on color.

Egg Production

Fawn & White Runner Ducks are very good egg layers. Their lightweight build and active nature help make them efficient, productive ducks for customers who want duck eggs for cooking, baking, or household use.

Duck egg production varies by breed, strain, age, feed, daylight, weather, health, and management. Cackle’s How Many Eggs Does a Duck Lay? explains that duck eggs are often larger than chicken eggs and that an average duck egg weighs a little more than 2.6 ounces, or about 1½ times the size of a large chicken egg.

For customers who want to keep ducks laying well, Cackle’s Ducks for Eggs: How to Keep Your Ducks Laying Well is a helpful internal care resource. It explains that production depends on factors such as breed, strain, age, light, feed, and management.

Foraging and Farm Use

Fawn & White Runner Ducks are extremely active foragers. They constantly search for vegetation, insects, and other natural foods, making them useful around farms, orchards, gardens, and backyard areas.

Their strong flock instinct makes them easier to move as a group, which is one reason Runner ducks were historically valued for herding. However, that same alert nature means they may startle easily.

Cackle’s 12 Benefits of Keeping Ducks is a useful internal link for customers considering ducks for eggs, pest patrol, entertainment, and general backyard value.

Temperament and Suitability

Indian Runner Ducks are active, alert, and entertaining. They are a favorite duck breed for many customers because their upright stance and quick movement make them so fun to watch.

They do have a strong flock instinct and may startle easily, so they do best with calm, steady handling. A safe routine, secure housing, and low-stress management can help them become more comfortable.

Because they are lighter than heavy meat ducks, they move well and forage eagerly. They need clean drinking water deep enough to dip and clean their bills and nostrils, dry bedding, predator protection, shade in hot weather, and room to move.

Keeping Ducks With Chickens

Some customers want to keep ducks and chickens together. That setup can work in some situations, but ducks and chickens have different water and bedding needs.

Ducks splash water, dampen bedding, and need water access that supports healthy bills and nostrils. Cackle’s Keeping Ducks Together with Chickens explains why first-time duck owners should not manage ducks exactly like chickens.

For a mixed flock, plan housing carefully. Dry bedding, a smart water setup, and enough space can help both ducks and chickens stay healthier.

Fall Duck Shipping

For customers looking for ducks outside the main spring season, Cackle notes that fall duck shipping may be available for Fawn & White Runners. Customers should check the Fawn & White Runner Duck fall shipping page and the Availability Chart for current hatch and shipping dates.

Cackle Hatchery® cannot ship ducks to Hawaii. Keep this shipping note clear so customers can plan before placing an order.

Breed History and Preservation

Runner ducks are among the oldest and most distinctive domestic duck breeds. Cackle’s heritage spotlight notes that the breed was known in the East Indies for at least 2,000 years and was traditionally herded over long distances because of its agility and strong flock instinct.

The Fawn & White variety became especially popular and entered the American Standard of Perfection in 1898. Over time, Runner ducks became famous for their upright posture, running movement, egg production, and usefulness as active foragers.

Today, Fawn & White Runners remain a favorite among backyard duck keepers, small farms, and customers who enjoy ducks that look and move differently from heavier breeds.

  1. Katherine Williamson

We recently ordered a total of 10 ducklings. One did not make it in transit but we received an extra so we did end up with 10 INCREDIBLY happy and healthy ducklings. They are so sweet. The runners are the most social so far and are so curious. They were clearly marked for ease and all settled in perfectly with NO issues with lethargy or nervousness. Always happy to order from Cackle!

    Wonderful

My 4 fawn and white runner ducks are a joy to have, they are now just starting to lay eggs but with the very cold weather that we are having I think they have stopped laying. They are fun to watch in the snow, they run and make lots of noise playing in it. Love them, will be ordering more ducks in 2020

  10. Ducky

    These ducks are great!

I ordered runner ducks 3 years ago and again this spring. These ducks are great layers and a lot of fun to have around. They can’t fly as well as chickens but they can a little and, at our place, they wander pretty far. They laid eggs all winter last year when my chicken didn’t. Their eggs are pretty big and great for baking.

  11. Happy

    Love these ducks, healthy birds.

Cackle ships healthy birds. Happy with the sexing and shipping of my runner ducks. One male and eight females. Runners are laying eggs for us now and are a great addition to the farm. They lay while the chickens moult and it is wonderful to have year round eggs.

  12. Stevieraycash9

Fawn and White runner duck hens

I received 9 Fawn and white runner ducks had ordered 10 but I am happy with the 100% accuracy for the 9 they sent most hatcheries probably wouldn’t have been honest and purposely would’ve sent a drake, all came alive and are all still living. Wish I would start seeing some eggs but I bet by mid March I will be drowning in eggs. Also ordered 32 Rouen ducks got 34 sent 1 dead upon arrival. Also ordered the hundred head frypan special and got 3 free black swedish ducks which were out of this world flavorful. Was considering to make Rouen ducks my go to farm yard bird but now I think I should’ve went with black Swedish all the way. the is the old heritage breed cockerels were also much more flavorful then the market broilers in the store best price on this sort of package, I will be ordering them again as well. Unfortunately my guineas were heavily targeted and I believe all 35/32 received are now extinct.

  13. Jill

    Dead Ducks

I ordered five Indian Runners along with some chicks (I think 15) Anyway, 4 or 5 were dead on arrival, most of the rest died shortly after. One duck survived, and 7 hens. I’ve NEVER had this happen with any other hatchery. They offered to refund my credit card, but that never happened. I would not buy from them again.

  14. Lily Lou

    I am in Love

My order of ducks arrived this morning. Ordered 5 female and 1 male fawn and white runners and received one extra. The male was marked, thank you. Also ordered 4 Ancona ducks. All arrived healthy and very active. They have no problem finding the water and feed. I know I will enjoy having them running around the yard when they are old enough. Thank you Cackle Hatchery. 19. Brenda (verified owner)

    Sweet little babies

Ordered two of these with my order of goslings, black runners, chicks and turkeys. They were a little sluggish and cold but once we got them warmed up they perked right up. We received them this past Wednesday, they were a little skittish compared to the others but they have quickly warmed up to us and now come to us to be held. Such little sweeties, these two are our bashful littles and that’s ok. I absolutely adore them and they love their smashed peas. As always cackle has done well!!
