Description

Hatchery Choice Runner Ducks

Hatchery Choice Runner Ducks are an assorted Runner Duck option selected by the hatchery based on current availability. This package may include Fawn & White Runner Ducks, Black Runner Ducks, or both.

Runner Ducks are active, upright ducks known for excellent mobility, strong foraging ability, and good egg production. They do not move like heavier domestic ducks. Instead of waddling, Runner Ducks stand tall and run.

This assortment is a good choice for customers who want Runner Ducks but do not need to choose one exact color variety.

This order ships from a different location through one of Cackle Hatchery®’s participating hatchery partners.

Cackle Hatchery® cannot ship these ducks to Hawaii or Puerto Rico.

What May Be Included

Hatchery Choice Runner Ducks may include:

Fawn & White Runner Ducks
Black Runner Ducks
A mix of both varieties

Because this is a hatchery-choice assortment, the exact color variety depends on what is available at hatch time. Customers should order with flexibility and understand that Cackle Hatchery® selects the ducklings included in the order.

Important Hatchery Choice Note

This is a true hatchery-choice Runner Duck assortment.

Cackle Hatchery® does not guarantee a specific color variety or combination. Your order may include Fawn & White Runner Ducks, Black Runner Ducks, or both, depending on availability.

Customers who need one specific Runner Duck color should order that variety directly when available. However, customers who simply want active, useful Runner Ducks may enjoy this assortment.

Breed Overview and Background

Runner Ducks were originally developed for high egg production, mobility, and field foraging. Their tall, narrow body shape allows them to move quickly across yards, pastures, and fields.

Many customers choose Runner Ducks because they are lively, practical, and fun to watch. Their upright carriage makes them one of the most recognizable duck types.

They work especially well for customers who want ducks that stay active, forage naturally, and add personality to a farm or backyard flock.

Appearance and Characteristics

Runner Ducks have a long, sleek body with an upright stance. They look very different from heavy domestic ducks because they carry themselves almost vertically.

Fawn & White Runner Ducks have a classic light-and-white Runner color pattern. Black Runner Ducks have darker plumage and add rich contrast to a mixed flock.

Since this package may include either variety, customers may receive lighter birds, darker birds, or a combination of both.

Egg Production

Runner Ducks are known as good egg-laying ducks. They were developed for production and mobility, making them useful for customers who want duck eggs from an active, lightweight breed.

Egg production can vary based on feed, daylight, season, weather, age, stress, and management. Even so, Runner Ducks have a strong reputation as dependable layers.

Customers focused heavily on duck egg production may also want to compare Khaki Campbell Ducks, Golden 300 Hybrid Layer Ducks, White Layer Ducks, and Welsh Harlequin Ducks.

Foraging Ability

Runner Ducks are excellent foragers. They stay busy searching for greens, insects, slugs, weed seeds, and other small food items.

They can help clean up:

Vegetation
Weed seeds
Insects
Slugs
Small bugs
Natural forage

This makes them useful for farms, homesteads, orchards, gardens, and backyard flocks with safe outdoor space.

However, foraging should support a good feeding program rather than replace it. Runner Ducks still need balanced duck feed, clean water, safe shelter, and predator protection.

Temperament and Flock Behavior

Runner Ducks have a strong flock instinct. They often move together as a group and may become nervous if separated.

They can also startle easily. Therefore, customers should handle them calmly, avoid chasing, and keep routines steady. With patient care, Runner Ducks can settle into a farm or backyard flock and become enjoyable daily birds.

Because they are active ducks, they do best with room to move and forage.

Housing and Daily Care

Hatchery Choice Runner Ducks need safe housing, clean water, proper feed, and enough room for daily movement.

A good setup should include:

Safe nighttime housing
Predator protection
Clean drinking water
Balanced duck or waterfowl feed
Dry bedding or resting areas
Shade in hot weather
Protection from wind and storms
Room to move and forage
Safe outdoor access

Runner Ducks do not need a large pond. Still, they need clean water deep enough to wash their bills and maintain normal duck health.

Hatchery Choice Runner Ducks vs Specific Runner Duck Colors

Choose Hatchery Choice Runner Ducks if you want Runner Ducks and do not mind whether you receive Fawn & White, Black, or a mix of both.

Choose a specific Runner variety if you need a certain color for breeding, flock appearance, or personal preference.

Related Runner Duck varieties may include Fawn & White Runner Ducks, Black Runner Ducks, Blue Runner Ducks, and Chocolate Runner Ducks.

Hatchery Choice Runner Ducks vs Mixed Hatchery Choice Ducks

Hatchery Choice Runner Ducks are limited to Runner Duck types, specifically Fawn & White and/or Black Runner Ducks.

Mixed Hatchery Choice Ducks may include a wider range of duck breeds such as Pekin, Rouen, Swedish, Cayuga, Buff, Welsh Harlequin, Runner Ducks, and more.

Choose Hatchery Choice Runner Ducks if you specifically want Runner Ducks. Choose a broader hatchery-choice duck assortment if you want more variety across different duck breeds.

Hatchery Choice Runner Ducks vs Khaki Campbell Ducks

Runner Ducks and Khaki Campbell Ducks both appeal to customers who want laying ducks.

Choose Hatchery Choice Runner Ducks if you want upright, active, mobile ducks with strong foraging ability and hatchery-choice color variety.

Choose Khaki Campbells if you want a traditional laying duck breed with a more typical duck body shape and a long reputation for egg production.

Both can work well for egg-focused customers, but Runner Ducks stand out for movement, posture, and field activity.

Shipping Note

Hatchery Choice Runner Duck orders ship from a different location through one of Cackle Hatchery®’s participating hatchery partners.

Because this product ships through a partner hatchery, customers should review ordering details carefully before placing an order. Availability, hatch dates, and shipping schedules may vary by season.

Cackle Hatchery® cannot ship these ducks to Hawaii or Puerto Rico.

Duckling Care After Arrival

Before Runner ducklings arrive, customers should prepare a clean, warm, and safe brooder.

A proper duckling setup should include:

A secure brooder
A proper heat source
Clean drinking water
Duckling feed or appropriate waterfowl starter
Dry bedding
Enough room to move away from heat
Protection from drafts, pets, and predators

Ducklings should always have access to water when eating. However, the water setup should reduce splashing so the brooder stays as dry as possible.

As Runner ducklings grow, they will need more space, better bedding management, and safe outdoor transition areas.

Don’t buy unless you only want drakes

I received 5 fawn and white, 3 blue, and 2 chocolate. I was excited for the good mix of colors. But all but one blue ended up being drakes.
