Hatchery Choice Geese

Breed Overview

Hatchery Choice Geese are a budget-friendly way to add geese to your backyard, homestead, pond, pasture, or small farm. If you want goslings at the lowest available price and are flexible on breed, this surplus special can be a smart choice.

This assortment is available only as straight run, which means goslings are not sexed. Depending on what hatches, your order may include one breed or a mix of breeds. Possible breeds may include White Chinese, African Goose, Toulouse Goose, and White Embden.

Because this is a hatchery-choice package, Cackle Hatchery® does not identify which breed was sent and does not keep records of which breeds are included in individual orders. That makes this special best for customers who care more about value, variety, and raising geese than choosing one exact breed.

Cackle Hatchery® lists Hatchery Choice Geese Surplus as a way to get a variety of geese for the backyard at a lower price, with a maximum order limit of 16 geese.

What May Be Included

Hatchery Choice Geese may or may not include more than one breed, depending on what hatches. Possible breeds include:

  • White Chinese
  • African Goose
  • Toulouse Goose
  • White Embden

However, customers should not order this special expecting a guaranteed mix. In some cases, the hatch may provide all one breed. In other cases, the order may include several different breeds.

If you need one specific breed, choose that breed’s individual product page instead. For flexible customers, though, this surplus special offers a lower-cost way to enjoy goslings without choosing one exact variety.

Possible Breeds in This Assortment

White Chinese Geese

White Chinese Geese are elegant, active geese known for alert behavior, usefulness as watch birds, egg-laying ability, and weed-control value. Cackle describes White Chinese as alert, prolific layers, and useful for weed control.

African Geese

African Geese are large, vocal geese with protective instincts and strong farmyard presence. Cackle describes African goslings as growing into large, vocal geese that are protective, useful for meat production, and capable of becoming gentle family pets.

Toulouse Geese

Toulouse Geese are large gray production geese often chosen for meat, moderate egg production, and classic homestead use. Cackle describes Toulouse as large gray production geese popular for meat, moderate egg production, and homesteads.

White Embden Geese

White Embden Geese are large white geese known for fast growth and strong meat production. Cackle describes White Embden goslings as large snowy white geese that grow quickly and make excellent meat birds.

Why Choose Hatchery Choice Geese?

Hatchery Choice Geese work best for customers who want geese but do not need one specific breed. Since the hatchery chooses from available surplus, this option helps customers get goslings at a lower price than ordering individual breeds.

This special is a good fit if you want:

  • A lower-cost way to start with geese
  • Straight-run goslings
  • A possible mix of common goose breeds
  • Backyard, homestead, pond, or pasture geese
  • A practical waterfowl option for small farms
  • A surprise assortment based on hatch availability
  • Goslings for customers who are flexible on breed

However, choose an individual breed page if you need a specific size, color, temperament, production goal, or breeding plan. Because Cackle does not identify or track which breeds go into each package, this special does not fit breed-specific breeding programs.

Hatchery Choice Geese vs Individual Goose Breeds: How to Choose

Choose Hatchery Choice Geese if your main goal is value and flexibility. This special may be assorted or may include all one breed, depending on availability.

Choose White Chinese Geese if you specifically want alert, elegant white geese that may help with weed control.

Choose African Geese if you want large, vocal geese with a strong farmyard presence.

Choose Toulouse Geese if you want large gray production geese for meat, moderate egg production, or homestead use.

Choose White Embden Geese if you want large white geese known for fast growth and meat production.

For broader waterfowl shopping, Cackle’s Geese for Sale category includes multiple goose breeds, and Cackle notes that waterfowl ship freshly hatched on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Uses for Backyard and Homestead Geese

Geese can serve several practical roles around a homestead. They may be raised for meat, eggs, down, watch-bird behavior, grazing, or simply the enjoyment of keeping waterfowl.

Cackle Hatchery’s goose category notes that geese can produce down, provide meat, serve as watch birds, and help keep a pond active. Cackle’s article All About Geese also notes that geese have long been used for exhibition, meat, eggs, feathers, down, and guard duty.

This assortment can work well for:

  • Backyard ponds
  • Homesteads
  • Small farms
  • Pasture settings
  • 4-H or FFA projects where exact breed is not required
  • Customers who want useful and entertaining waterfowl
  • Families who enjoy raising goslings

Even so, geese need space, water access for drinking and cleaning, secure nighttime housing, and respectful handling. They can become protective as adults, especially during breeding season.

Straight Run and Breed Identification Notes

Cackle Hatchery® sells Hatchery Choice Geese as straight run only. That means the hatchery does not separate males and females for this package.

In addition, Cackle Hatchery® does not tell customers which breed they received and does not keep records of what breeds go into individual orders. Therefore, customers should treat this as a true hatchery-choice surplus special.

Because of that, this package works well for customers who enjoy a surprise. However, it does not suit customers who need guaranteed breed identification, exact breed ratios, or specific breeding stock.

Order Limit and Shipping Notes

Hatchery Choice Geese have a maximum order limit of 16.

Cackle Hatchery® cannot ship geese to Hawaii. Customers in other states should still check the product page, shipping rules, and availability before ordering.

Cackle’s waterfowl category notes that the hatchery offers baby ducklings and goslings for farms, homesteads, and backyards. The goose category also explains that Cackle ships waterfowl when they are freshly hatched.

Because hatch and shipping dates can change, customers should check Cackle Hatchery’s Chicken Availability Chart before ordering. The availability chart updates frequently as egg numbers and hatch estimates become more accurate.

Basic Gosling Care

Goslings need a warm, clean brooder when they arrive. They grow quickly, so customers should prepare enough space, proper feed, safe water access, and dry bedding before shipping week.

For best results, provide:

  • A warm brooder before goslings arrive
  • Clean, dry bedding with good traction
  • Fresh water deep enough for drinking but safe for young birds
  • Proper waterfowl starter or an appropriate feed plan
  • Enough room as goslings grow
  • Protection from drafts, chilling, and dampness
  • Secure outdoor housing as they mature

Waterfowl can be messy with water, so brooder setup matters. To keep goslings healthier, manage drinking areas carefully so bedding does not stay wet. Then, as the birds grow, move them into larger, secure housing with enough room to stretch, graze, and exercise.

Keeping Geese with Other Waterfowl

Many customers keep geese with ducks, especially when birds grow up together and have enough space. Cackle Hatchery’s article Keeping Ducks and Geese Together explains that ducks and geese can get along well and are often fine to keep in the same area.

Even so, flock management matters. Geese can be larger, louder, and more protective than ducks. Therefore, provide enough feeder space, water access, shelter, and room so smaller birds do not get crowded.

Is Hatchery Choice Geese Right for You?

Choose Hatchery Choice Geese if you want:

  • A value-priced goose assortment
  • Straight-run goslings
  • Possible variety without choosing exact breeds
  • Backyard or homestead waterfowl
  • Geese for a pond, pasture, or small farm
  • A surprise package chosen by the hatchery
  • A flexible option from common goose breeds

However, choose individual breed listings if you need a specific breed, color, size, production goal, or breeding plan. In short, Hatchery Choice Geese are best for flexible customers who want geese at a lower price and are happy to let the hatchery choose based on availability.

  1. Blaine Boschman

I LOVE my geese. I ordered the hatchery choice surplus and I got a good variety. I got a female Embden, a Toulouse, and two white Chinese. They were all alive and healthy when they came in. This is my first experience with geese and I know I will be ordering more!

  2. Sisco Farms

Ordered 4 Hatchery Choice Goslings. We had a hiccup in shipping with my local post office refusing delivery. Cackle employees helped me track my birds down and get them home. All four babies arrived alive and healthy. I am very pleased with Cackle’s animals and even more pleased with their customer service. If you’re looking for a hatchery, look no further; you found them!!

  3. sventswanson1971

I received an order of four healthy goslings this spring. They survived the trek to Minnesota, even though the weather wasn’t nearly optimal. I have three breeds and I absolutely love them.

  4. Andrew Flores

All of the birds arrived healthy and happy and have been good guardians of the chickens and ducks that came with them. I got 3 toulese geese and a embden all gals which is perfect as they are all for my first goose from cackle a big loud African goose named Alex.

  5. Michelle Prentice

  7. cjp5920

I have never owned geese before so I decided to let Cackle select my breeds for me. There are 4 breeds available and I surprisingly ended up with 1 of each. The Chinese and African are guardian breeds which ended up being perfect for my homestead. Thanks Cackle Hatchery!

  8. aspen

I ordered 8 Hatchery Choice Geese, and all of them arrived safe and sound! Ended up with 5 White Embdens and 3 either African or Toulouse goslings. I would order from Cackle again, great assortment of goslings.

  9. Theclassicalfarmer

    Great bargain

I couldn’t decide what type of geese I wanted so decided to go with the hatchery special. I received 2 Toulouse geese and a chinese goose and was very happy with them. One of the Toulouse geese ended up having severely bowed legs and he was later killed by a predator. The Chinese goose is very protective of his girls and us and will attack our dogs and guests if he thinks we are being threatened, which I consider I good thing.

  10. Phod

    Great experience

I’m very happy with the purchase I made through cackle hatchery. They c allied and checked on my animals and to see if I needed anything. Very nice employees! Thanks for everything.

  11. fuzzy5

Within driving distance happy to say

After having geese for almost 40 years, our male mixed Toulouse died suddenly in early June. We love the disposition of the Toulouse but by that time of the year, had to buy the choice surplus offering. Ended up getting 2 Chinese (very aggressive and 1 has a genetic defect), 2 Toulouses, and 1 Emden. Our old Toulouse has her ‘wings’ full teaching them the dos and don’ts but all seem to be adjusting to our little AR farm. We PLAN to drive back up in the Spring and get more hatchlings. Overall content w/ the purchase.

  12. Gigi

    Very happy customer

I received my geese today and the hatchery even put in an extra in case something happened to one. But nope they all were happy and making noise. I will recommend Cackle Hatchery. Thanks

  15. ChickensInWichita

    Very happy with Cackle

We drove 5 hours from Wichita to the Cackle Hatchery. We wanted a Toulouse to be a friend to our single African Goose. They said they were out of Toulouse but gave us a African instead. Six weeks later, ll and behold, it was a Toulouse. Tungi is now 6 months old and very healthy. She loves the Kansas winter we are having and is best friends to our other female African goose, who is just 2 mi this older than she is. They are inseparable. In fact, the picture of the African and Toulouse that Cackle uses for their “Hatchery Geese Assortment” is actually of Paca and Tungi that I posted on Backyardchickens.com. We will be using Cackle again.
