Description

The Pioneer Broiler Chicken is truly a homesteader’s dream! This carefully bred combination of the Transylvanian Naked Neck, Delaware, and a heritage strain of Cornish Cross dating back to the 1940s has resulted in a bird that is truly robust and low maintenance. They possess strong foraging instincts and actively seek out nature’s offerings, supporting a healthy diet, cutting feeding costs, and improving meat and egg quality. They are an excellent choice for a free-range or pasture-based system. Please note some will hatch with feathers on their neck; this is not a defect, and they are still genetically a Pioneer.

Pioneer Broiler Chickens have a high heat tolerance and are an excellent alternative to commercial chickens. They are bred for stronger immune systems, bone density, and health, which leads to the ability to digest a more diverse diet grown in regenerative agricultural systems. These birds THRIVE outdoors.

Growing at a natural pace, Pioneer Broiler Chickens are ready for harvesting around 9-10 weeks old, with an average live weight of 6 lbs at that age. However, they can be grown longer with no impact on their quality of life. Due to their Naked Neck makeup, they are easier to process due to having fewer feathers overall. Customers report rich and flavorful meat with excellent texture. When kept for eggs, you can expect 200-280 eggs annually from the hens.

  • Low Maintenance: Robust health and natural behaviors reduce the need for intensive management.
  • Adaptability: Pioneer Broiler Chickens thrive in diverse farming systems, from pasture-based to traditional.
  • Diverse Diet: The foraging abilities lead to a more varied and natural diet, resulting in healthier birds and improved meat quality.
  • Strong Legs, Natural Gait, and Endurance: Pioneer Broiler Chickens develop robust leg muscles, enabling them to cover more ground efficiently. Their walking style mimics wild fowl, promoting better joint health and reducing stress. Their high endurance maximizes their free-range potential.
  • Approved for use in the following certifications: GAP Certifications: Animal Welfare Certified and Better Chicken Project Certified, along with Better Chicken Commitment
  • This breed is a hybrid. Hybrids are created by crossing two different parents and will not breed true.
