Description

Golden Sebright Bantam Chicken

Breed History and Origin

The Golden Sebright Bantam is a colorful variety of the Sebright Bantam breed, a true miniature chicken developed in England in the early 1800s. Known as one of the first true bantam breeds, Sebrights were bred specifically for ornamental and exhibition purposes. This variety was recognized by the American Standard of Perfection in 1874 within the Rose Comb Clean Legged Bantam class. Cackle Hatchery® Poultry Breeding Farm has been developing its bloodline of Sebright Bantams since 1979, with additional improvements made in 2011 using new bloodlines to help refine size and consistency while maintaining quality for shipping and survivability.

Appearance and Breed Characteristics

Golden Sebright Bantam chickens are known for their striking gold and black laced feather pattern, where each feather is distinctly outlined in black. One of their most unique traits is that males do not have traditional sickle feathers, giving both sexes a similar appearance. Mature hens typically weigh about 20 ounces, while roosters average around 22 ounces. Pullets generally weigh about 18 ounces, and cockerels about 20 ounces. Their refined structure and bold coloring make them a standout breed in exhibition settings.

Egg Production and Performance

Golden Sebright Bantam hens lay small cream or lightly tinted bantam-sized eggs, and egg production is considered fair. While not bred for high production, they provide a modest supply of eggs in backyard flocks.

Temperament and Flock Suitability

This breed is known for being active and spirited, with a slightly flighty nature compared to heavier breeds. While manageable, they are best suited for poultry keepers familiar with lighter, more alert bantam varieties. Fertility percentages generally range between 40–55%, with a recommended mating ratio of eight females to one male. Sebrights are non-setters, meaning they rarely go broody. They prefer roost heights between 2 to 4 feet.

Important Breeding Notes

Maintaining proper size in Sebright Bantams is important. While smaller birds are often desirable, breeding them too small can affect their ability to ship well as day-old chicks. Careful breeding practices are used to balance size, health, and overall quality.

Exhibition and Breed Use

The Golden Sebright Bantam is primarily an ornamental and exhibition breed, prized for its laced feather pattern and unique characteristics. They are a popular choice among poultry enthusiasts looking for a visually striking show bird.

I ordered five Golden Sebrights. I received seven- very nice.
Shipping was very fast, the box was very secure, and all birds arrived safely and were healthy.
The birds are now three months old, and there have been no losses or problems whatsoever. The birds seem to be of good quality.
Out of seven birds, I ended up with one poullet and six cockerels.
They are very friendly and will be all over me in minutes, if I crouch near them. They seem intelligent and feisty, as well as beautiful and cute.
I highly recommend Cackle Hatchery as a choice for this breed, if you are choosing between hatcheries.
    Good luck!

  2. Tracy Oliver

We ordered 5 Golden Sebrights along with some other bantam breeds, and all 5 (plus 2 extra!) arrived alive and healthy within 24 hours of shipping! They have grown into beautiful birds with the most curious personalities. I would highly recommend this breed of chicken from Cackle Hatchery.

  3. Rod MacQuarrie

We ordered 5 chicks, they sent 6. Four (4) ended up being pullets so we had to rehome the roosters. One rooster had crooked toes from birth. They are very hardy birds, and their feathering is near perfect, with no black splotches like other Sebright bantams we purchased from a local Tractor Supply store a couple years ago. The only difference I noticed is their eyes are not as black as the ones from Tractor Supply. The breed is a bit flighty, but able to easily fly away from hawks. We’ve had them fly up into the tops of trees 40 feet tall to escape hawks, but they fly down again for treats. These are wonderful birds. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy from Cackle Hatchery again.

Excellent, all the chicks arrived in perfect condition and I received 3 extra.

  5. Kaila Holtz

Excellent quality health chicks every single one thrived from the get go. Turning into really lovely pullets and cockrels.

  6. Tyler McCaughn

Cackle has been my “go to” hatchery for the past few years for good reason. The Sebrights are no exception to the rule here. The Golden Sebrights are pretty little bantams with a pretty mild nature once they are handled. Cackle’s birds came in with a large order in May and they have grown out to be exceptional birds. The colors and comb seem to pop among the other birds at the farm.

    1 for 5

We ordered 15 chickens and ended up w 3 hens. The seabrights are beautiful, but we ended up w only 1 golden.

    Beautiful but shy

I ordered 3 kinds of bantams this spring — Buff Orpingtons, Old English Game Bantams, and Sebrights. The Sebrights are beautiful but shy. I raised them the same as the other 2 kinds but they will not let me pick them up. They will eat treats out of my hands, though. The roosters crow A LOT, I don’t know if that’s a trait of the breed or if they’re compensating for something 😉 Thank you Cackle Hatchery for such beautiful, healthy birds.

    Great service

Golden sebrights, Red Pyles & Gold Duckwings. Great experience with my first ever endeavor of ordering chicks. Taylor was very helpful & accommodating when I needed to postpone my order due to health issue. Chicks arrived in good condition & happy to get out of box!! I would not hesitate to order from Cackle again.

    excellent

Ordered 15 Sebright bantams and I received 17 (thanks Cackle) peeps traveled 2 days and were in great shape upon arrival. 4 days later all 17 are thriving, I had my doubts about 2 day shipping, as I have always ordered close for next day drop. Pleased to say all went well and would order again from Cackle.

    Thanks

Everything went perfectly. We ordered 28 chicks from different varieties & got 35 total. Shipped on May 26 & got here on the 28th. I was so worried the post office would mess things up. They never called me but thanks to Cackle’s system, I got the tracking # & monitored the shipment. They all arrived perfectly fine chirping like crazy & moving around. I followed their instructions & all were doing great til Saturday when 1 of the porcelain duccles died overnight. For such a long journey I am extremely & pleasantly surprised. We ordered 5 of these golden sebrights & got 1 extra. Very pleased with the way the company works. Thank you so much.Highly recommend.

    Sebrights arrived well

I received my Sebrights along with 2 additional breeds. They all arrived well. It was a cold morning so I hurried them to the house and under the lights. I live close to the post office, so I clicked on my lights in this nice large brooder hubby just made for me, just as I was leaving the house. All chicks immediately ate and drank. Then they seemed to be weakening. I then realized my heat was escaping and temp was about 95. For these little birds, 105 is important. I used some blankets over most of the top wire to keep heat in and a heating pad on low. This brought the temp up to 105 and all the babies were happy and survived. The temp is so important. 105 the first day or two. Love the babies. They are now three weeks old and doing great.

  14. Jillermeistwe

    Beautiful but aggressive

They are beautiful, but very skiddish even though handled since chicks. The hens are docile but the roosters attack everything, me, my dog, the cat. They don’t know how little they are. They can’t hurt anything but boy are they noisy and feisty in comparison to several other breeds I have.

  15. Sandy in CA

    Arrived happy & clean

I ordered 5 Golden Sebrights, received 6 chirping, clean bottomed, took to drinking & eating right away. Very pleased on Day One.
