Description

Splash Ameraucanas are mostly white birds with random splashes of blue to black color in their feathers.  These attractive chickens are easy to create by breeding two blue Ameraucanas together. Since blue doesn’t breed true, blue, black and splash chicks may hatch.

Splash does breed true, though. So splash bred to splash produces only splash chicks. Splash and black are co-dominant. So splash bred to black results in all blue chicks.

Cackle Hatchery® started offering blue egg laying splash Ameraucanas in 2018. A small percentage will lay eggs with shells in shades of light green. Splash Ameraucanas are not a recognized standard variety by the American Poultry Association. For a list of the best blue egg layers visit Cackle Hatchery’s Best Blue Egg Layers Blog.

NOTE: Our sexers have a hard time determining the gender of the Ameraucana. So their vent sexing on this breed is about 80% accurate on the average, and well below the normal average accuracy of 90% for other breeds. Please take this into consideration when ordering females.

Also, the Ameraucana breed has an inherent genetic beak issue. One out of 100 chicks, as they grow, may have some variance in severity of scissor beak/cross beak. This condition occurs when the top and bottom beak don’t align. The condition normally gets worse as the chick grows. Numerous articles and information on the Internet covering this subject.

Make plans to order your splash Ameraucana chicks as soon as late November. They hatch and ship from early February through early August.

We bought 3 female chicks, and received 2 extras free of charge. The 3 splash Ameraucana chicks were all female. The 2 extras look like they were lavender, and we ended up with 1 hen and 1 roo. Ironically I named the lavender chick “Fleki”, it was the only hen without spots! We have had them nearly a year now, and they might be the healthiest chickens we’ve had so far. Unfortunately only one hen started laying before it was too cold, but the blue eggs are beautiful. We are very happy with these chicks and would recommend.

My splash Americana, named Sky, is such a beautiful and sweet chicken!! Her splash markings are gorgeous and her temperament is friendly. She loves to perch on my shoulder or even my head if other chickens are occupying my shoulders. She is not pushy or loud but instead quiet and gentle. She has full muffs and beard and is of a slighter build than my Easter Eggers and black Americana. As a chick she looked lavender but as she feathered out, she developed her splash pattern. Over all she is a great chicken I love her splash pattern and I can’t wait to see her eggs – which should be soon as they are going to be 6 months old soon.

Got my chicks today and they are so full of life! Fluffy, active, eating and drinking! Ordered 15 and got a few extra. 2 days in transit to Florida. This order exceeded my expectations and I couldn’t ask for any better.

I have to say I’m very pleased with these chickens! This is my second time ordering from cackle hatchery and they have some amazing breeds! My hens are now 6 months old and one has laid her 1st egg! It is very very blue!!! Its actually darker then my Easter eggers eggs!! Which I also purchased from here a year and a half ago! The Easter eggers have good eggs too and vibrant in color but this breed just happens to be darker! And they are my most friendliest! They always come right up to me let me pet them they’re supper sweet! I will say tho we did end up having one with cross beak but they sent an extra bc this can happen. We tried to save and feed her but she just didn’t survive! Over all I’m very happy with my purchase!! I originally ordered some buff Marans ameuricanas, and blue laced Wyandotte. All came healthy and are thriving except for the extra one that had cross beak. One of my marans turned out to be a roo, which is to be expected even tho I ordered all hens I received 11 altogether and only ended up with one roo. He’s actually really nice and we plan to hatch some of our own in the spring!! One of my marans laid her egg for the 1st time and let me tell u that is the darkest brown egg I’ve ever seen! It’s stunning! She is black tailed red Marans! Or buff maran for short. Thanks cackle hatchery for making some pretty awesome chickens! I will always come here when I buy chicks!

They are so pretty with vivid white and grey splash! Mine are now about 5mo old close to full grown. They are slightly more timid/flighty than some of the other “fat fluffy hens” but have a very sweet demeanor overall no complaints. I am not sure about the egg color yet but they will soon come 🙂

  6. Bailey Mcdonald

Ordered 4 females and they gave me an extra! All 5 are now 8 weeks old and doing fantastic! They are a beautiful addition to the flock!

  7. rida29r

I ordered 3, ended up with 4 yippeee! Unfortunately one was a Roo however a friend wanted him, and she’s a happy girl! These are absolutely stunning hens. We are at 10 weeks now and they are lapchickens. I usually have one on each shoulder and another in my lap in the evening sunset. They are smart and personable….but I can see how they would dismiss a human if not raised closely as hatchlings. Each girl has different eye color and they are truly stunning. Thanks CH!! I love my girls.

  8. Ari

    Beautiful!

There was an extra one put into my order of 3 and as luck would have it, they are all girls! Came healthy and just a-peepin’. 10 weeks old now and so beautiful. All of my other chicken keeping friends are jealous! They are flightier than my other girls but I’m working on bribing with treats. My experience with cackle was so positive.

  9. Em

    Adorable!

I ordered 8 unsexed, and was nervous about the shipping, but they were ready for pickup 36hrs after shipping! Cackle Hatchery went 10 just incase, but they’re all looking healthy after the first day! So excited! Will update at 1 month.

  10. Elaine

    Good blue eggs!

My splashes that I got spring 2019 all laid blue eggs. One hen did not have any muffs or beard, but they were all more hardy and faster growing than my black Ameraucanas. One hen did go broody.

    Pretty birds with puffy cheeks

They are 6 months old, I ordered as day old chicks from Cackle. Haven’t started laying yet, but I wanted some colorful eggs. What I didn’t know is that splash ameraucanas have puffy, fuzzy cheeks! So cute.

    Lovely And Colorful!

My Splash are almost a year old now and I just love them! The older they get the more splash markings show up. 1 in particular is stunning, looking as though I painted her with black spots and stripes! The others have gorgeous dark and light blue splotches and stripes. Great layers too with dark blue eggs.
