Breed Overview and Origin
The White Pekin Duck originated in China and came to the Americas in the 1870s. The breed quickly became popular because of its rapid growth, useful body size, and dependable domestic traits.
The American Poultry Association admitted the White Pekin to the American Standard of Perfection in 1874. Since then, Pekins have remained one of the best-known white domestic duck breeds.
Today, customers choose White Pekins for meat production, backyard enjoyment, pets, youth projects, farm flocks, and classic duck appeal.
Appearance and Characteristics
White Pekin Ducks have clean white plumage, orange bills, orange legs, and a broad domestic duck body. Their bright white color gives them the familiar farm-duck look many people picture when they think of a duck.
Pekin ducklings are yellow when young and become white as they mature. Their cheerful appearance, steady growth, and active behavior help make them one of the most popular duckling choices.
Because they grow into larger domestic ducks, customers should prepare enough brooder space, outdoor room, and water access as they develop.
Growth Rate and Meat Value
White Pekin Ducks grow fast. That quick growth rate makes them one of the best choices for customers who want a meat-type duck.
Their body size, white feathering, and long history as a production duck all help make the Pekin a practical farm and homestead breed. Customers who want ducks for meat production, freezer projects, or general farm use often start with Pekins because they are dependable and well known.
Customers wanting an even larger meat-type Pekin option may also want to compare Jumbo Pekin Ducks.
Temperament and Backyard Value
White Pekin Ducks are active, entertaining, and fun to watch. They bring movement and personality to a backyard flock, pond area, or small farm.
They can also make good pets when customers handle them calmly and provide proper care. Like all ducks, Pekins need clean water, balanced feed, safe shelter, and predator protection.
Because Pekins grow larger than lightweight breeds, customers should give them enough space to move comfortably. Good bedding management also matters because ducks splash water and can make brooder or pen areas wet quickly.
Hatching Ability and Flock Use
White Pekins have good hatching ability and strong domestic flock value. Customers may choose them for farm projects, family flocks, pet ducks, and meat production.
They can fit several goals, including:
Meat production
Backyard duck flocks
Farm ponds
Pet ducks
Youth poultry projects
Homestead flocks
Entertainment and family enjoyment
Classic white duck appearance
Their combination of fast growth, popularity, and recognizable appearance makes them a useful all-around duck for many customers.
White Pekin Duck vs Jumbo Pekin Duck
White Pekin Ducks and Jumbo Pekin Ducks share the same general Pekin background, but they serve slightly different customer goals.

Choose Jumbo Pekin Ducks if you want Cackle Hatchery®’s largest Pekin strain with stronger meat pen and meat production focus.

Choose White Pekin Ducks if you want a fast-growing white duck with classic farm-duck appeal.
Choose Buff Ducks if you want a warm buff-colored dual-purpose duck with egg production and roasting value.
Pekins are especially popular for quick growth and recognizable appearance, while Buff Ducks appeal to customers who want more color variety.
White Pekin Duck vs Rouen Duck
White Pekin Ducks and Rouen Ducks are both larger domestic ducks, but they look very different.
Choose White Pekins if you want a white, fast-growing duck with strong meat value.
Choose Rouens if you want a larger duck with Mallard-like coloring and calm pond-duck appeal.
Both breeds can work for backyard flocks and farm settings. The best choice depends on whether the customer prefers classic white Pekins or colorful Rouens.

Duckling Care After Arrival
Before White Pekin ducklings arrive, customers should prepare a clean, warm, and safe brooder.
A proper duckling setup should include:
A secure brooder
A proper heat source
Clean drinking water
Duckling feed or appropriate waterfowl starter
Dry bedding
Enough room to move away from heat
Protection from drafts, pets, and predators
Ducklings should always have access to water when eating. However, the water setup should reduce splashing so the brooder stays as dry as possible.
Because Pekins grow quickly, customers should increase space as the ducklings develop. In addition, they should keep bedding dry, monitor leg and foot health, and make sure feed and water stay easy to reach.
