Cold Weather Chickens

Some people thrive in warm climates, and choose to live in places like Florida, California or Texas where mild and hot weather is expected day after day. Others choose to live in colder areas of the country, like New England, the Northern Plains or the Pacific Northwest. No matter where you live, however, if you’re looking to raise chickens as pets, food or egg-layers, Cackle Hatchery has got you covered.

This selection of chickens includes the breeds that are rated as cold hardy, and more capable of living in snowy or wintery areas of the country. These cold-weather chickens can survive and thrive in the winter weather and chilly conditions found in northern climates. Thanks to their distinctive characteristics, cold-hardy chickens are able to stand up to the harsh cold and snow as well as thrive in the warmer summer season.

Cold-weather chickens often have smaller combs and wattles, meaning that there is less exposed flesh on these birds. With a smaller exposed area, there is a dramatically diminished risk of frostbite or exposure. These cold-hardy chickens also have a thicker, fluffier feathering. This allows the chickens to better retain heat and protect their bodies from melting snow or cold winds.

If you’re seeking chickens that are well adapted to life in winter climates, you’ll find them here at Cackle Hatchery. Check out the different options available to you below, or give us a call today at 417-532-4581 for help picking the perfect birds for your home.
