- Blue Slate Turkey
The Blue Slate turkey is a rare breed of turkey of the heritage turkey and admitted into the American Standard of Perfection in 1874. Past breeding is thought to be derived from the Spanish Black turkey of USA and the Norfolk Black in England. The Blue Slate turkey makes an excellent forager and backyard/farm turkey. They are capable of reproducing naturally and do go broody. Baby turkey (poults) sent to you from Cackle Hatchery® are the “ blue slate (splash)” and the “blues” of the Blue Slate turkey breed. Our parent stock of blue slate turkeys on our farms produce 3 color patterns (blue splash, blue and black). The color pattern of the slate turkey breed is interesting to work with on a breeding level. Briefly, a splash slate bred to another splash slate will produce all splash slates (ash blue color with some small black dots), breeding the blue slate to blue slate will produce all three color patterns, blue slate splash, blue and black offspring. The blue to black generally produces offspring of blues and blacks with no splash slates. Black to black will produce generally all blacks. You can also order the “Blacks” of the Blue Slate turkey breed on request and we will pick these out for you.

Little cuddle bugs!! Review by Brenda
Our blue slate, bourbon red and royal palm all came this past Wednesday. New turkey mom and I love them. They love to be held in warm hands. Instantly puts them to sleep. They have done very well. Our entire order was packed with great care and everyone arrived in good health. Our little fawn and white runners were a little cold but once we warmed them up they perked right up. Cackle birds are the best!! (Posted on 6/11/2017)
Impressed Review by K.M.
Turkeys/chickens: received my 4 slate turkeys and 14 other chickens today. Received 2 extra for a total of 20 . All alive and active/alert. Packaging was superb and secure. Was very worried that a couple birds may not make it due to hot July weather but all survived and doing well. Birds took right away to eating and drinking from fountain after dipping beaks into water as you suggested once put into brooder. Thanks again for the healthy birds, will definitely be ordering again next season. (Posted on 7/27/2016)

Hello Review by Victoria, Wisconsin September 2012
In July I ordered a batch of Jumbo Cross Broilers. Despite the extreme heat all summer in the Midwest, my chicks arrived in perfect health - with a few extras thrown in by your hatchery at no extra charge. (Thank You!) All of the chicks were running around, eating and drinking on the first day. They were so healthy we were able to move them out of the brooder into our chicken tractor in the the pasture by the age of 2 weeks. At 8 weeks we butchered them - all 64! We had not lost a single chicken in 8 weeks. Our chickens post-processing have been weighing 5-5 1/2# even the hens - some we had trouble fitting into oven bag! We are completely thrilled with the health and quality of your birds and will definitely order them again next year. Oh, and our 4 Blue Slate turkeys are also doing great and are the sweetest birds!

Thank You Review by Nina, Missouri April 2013
Cannot say enough about the wonderful order of chicks that I picked up from your hatchery. Since I was there I also got 6 Blue Slate Turkeys. All are doing well, feeding and growing and I even received a couple mystery chicks. I am having a great time trying to figure out what they are. Your hatchery staff are great, very helpful and knowledgeable. I will be recommending you to all my chicken loving friends. Thank You (Posted on 11/27/2015)
Where do I start? Review by Nina, Missouri July 2013
I picked up an order of chickens on April 23 of this year. You had some Blue Slate turkeys available when I got there so I thought OK I will try 6. What were the chances of getting 3 pairs, 3 toms and 3 hens? They are growing in leaps and bounds and everyone who sees them ask me where I got them. I am so PROUD to say Cackle Hatchery. Next year I will be ordering the Royal Palms turkeys also. Your staff is so knowledgeable. They looked over my order and noticed one of my chicks wasn't a Light Brahma or a Wyandotte...they all looked the same to me so they added another chick to the order. I said it didn't matter what kind just surprise me. Well they were right, one of the chicks is different and the added chick turned out to be a Dark Brahma so either way I was happy. I have already been going over the catalog planning next springs order. I am thinking "BROILERS"...yummy! Thank you for the high quality birds and even higher quality staff. (Posted on 11/25/2015)
Chick Order Review by Angie Texas April 2014
I got them! They look great. Everyone alive and chirping. I really did not expect them until tomorrow. I briefly looked at sex and most are hens, which is just what I wanted. Thank you. Your customer service has been great! You kept me informed of my order and were really nice in doing so. I will be ordering from you again.
