Description

Rouen Duck

The Rouen Duck is a large, calm domestic duck with the classic coloring of a Mallard but with a heavier body and a more grounded nature. Rouens bring beauty, usefulness, and personality to backyard flocks, farm ponds, ranch ponds, and homesteads.

Rouen Ducks are a French breed used for both eggs and meat. They also make good show ducks, entertaining pets, and practical waterfowl for customers who want a colorful domestic duck that does not fly far.

This order ships from a different location through one of Cackle Hatchery®’s participating hatchery partners.

Cackle Hatchery® cannot ship ducks to Hawaii.

Breed Overview and Origin

The Rouen Duck originated in France and became a well-known domestic duck because of its size, attractive Mallard-like plumage, and dual-purpose value.

The American Poultry Association admitted the Rouen Duck into the American Standard of Perfection in 1874. Since then, the breed has remained popular with customers who want a larger duck for ponds, backyard flocks, meat value, eggs, and exhibition.

Rouens look similar to Mallards in color, but they grow larger and heavier. Because of that extra size, they do not fly like wild Mallards. Most Rouens do not fly more than about 100 feet.

Appearance and Characteristics

Rouen Ducks have the basic coloration of Mallards, which gives them a beautiful, natural look. Drakes often show the familiar green head, white neck ring, darker chest, and patterned body. Hens have brown patterned feathering that gives them a softer, more camouflaged appearance.

However, Rouens are much larger than Mallards. Their heavier domestic body gives them better meat value and makes them more suitable for farm and backyard use.

This breed is a good choice for customers who like the look of Mallards but want a larger, calmer duck that stays closer to home.

Egg Production and Meat Value

Rouen Ducks are a dual-purpose breed, which means customers can use them for both eggs and meat. They do not grow as quickly as Pekin Ducks, but they offer useful body size, attractive plumage, and practical farm value.

Because Rouens grow more slowly than Pekins, customers who want the fastest meat production may prefer Pekin Ducks or Jumbo Pekin Ducks. However, customers who want a calmer, colorful, dual-purpose duck may enjoy Rouens more.

Egg production can vary by bird, feed, daylight, season, age, and flock management. With good care, Rouens can contribute eggs while also adding size and beauty to the flock.

Temperament and Pet Value

Rouen Ducks are calm, sociable, and entertaining. Their steady temperament makes them enjoyable for customers who want backyard ducks or pond ducks with personality.

They can make good pets when customers handle them calmly and provide proper housing, water, feed, and protection. Because they are larger and less flighty than Mallards, they can be easier to manage in many farm or backyard settings.

Rouens are also fun to watch. They enjoy water, forage well, and bring a classic duck look to ponds and outdoor spaces.

Pond, Ranch, and Backyard Use

Rouen Ducks make excellent waterfowl for ranch ponds, farm ponds, and backyard duck areas. Their Mallard-style coloring looks natural on the water, while their larger domestic size helps them stay more grounded than flying duck breeds.

They can also help with insect control. Like other ducks, Rouens enjoy foraging for small insects, bugs, greens, and other natural food items when given safe outdoor access.

Even so, customers should still provide balanced duck feed, clean water, shelter, and predator protection. Pond access can enrich their daily life, but it does not replace complete care.

Flight Ability

Rouen Ducks look like large Mallards, but they do not fly like Mallards. Because of their heavier domestic build, they generally do not fly more than about 100 feet.

This makes Rouens a practical choice for customers who want the look of a Mallard without the strong flight ability of true Mallards.

Still, customers should provide secure housing and protection. A duck that does not fly far can still wander, and predators can still threaten birds on ponds, pastures, or yards.

Show and Exhibition Value

Rouen Ducks can make good show ducks. Their size, color pattern, and traditional breed type give them strong visual appeal.

Customers interested in exhibition should study current show standards and select birds carefully. Like any breed, show goals may require different selection priorities than meat, egg, or pet goals.

For customers who want a breed with both practical value and show potential, Rouens can be a rewarding choice.

Rouen Duck vs Mallard Duck

Rouen Ducks and Mallard Ducks look similar in color, but they serve different purposes.

Choose Rouen Ducks if you want a larger, calmer domestic duck with meat value, pond appeal, and limited flight ability.

Choose Mallard Ducks if you want a smaller, lighter, flying duck with stronger wild-type behavior and natural pond activity.

Rouens suit customers who like Mallard coloring but prefer a heavier backyard or farm duck.

Rouen Duck vs Pekin Duck

Rouen Ducks and Pekin Ducks are both useful domestic ducks, but they differ in growth rate, color, and purpose.

Choose Rouens if you want a calm, colorful, dual-purpose duck with show value and ranch pond appeal.

Choose Pekins if you want a fast-growing white duck with strong meat production value.

Rouens grow more slowly than Pekins, but many customers prefer Rouens for their temperament, natural coloring, and pond presence.

Rouen Duck vs Swedish Ducks

Rouen Ducks and Blue Swedish Ducks or Black Swedish Ducks can all work well for customers who want larger domestic ducks.

Choose Rouens if you want Mallard-like coloring, calm temperament, pond appeal, and show value.

Choose Swedish Ducks if you want a domestic duck with blue-gray or black plumage and classic farm-duck utility.

All three can bring beauty and usefulness to a flock. The best choice depends on color preference and flock goals.

Shipping Note

Rouen Duck orders ship from a different location through one of Cackle Hatchery®’s participating hatchery partners.

Because this breed ships through a partner hatchery, customers should review ordering details carefully before placing an order. Availability, hatch dates, and shipping schedules may vary by season.

Duckling Care After Arrival

Before Rouen ducklings arrive, customers should prepare a clean, warm, and safe brooder.

A proper duckling setup should include:

A secure brooder
A proper heat source
Clean drinking water
Duckling feed or appropriate waterfowl starter
Dry bedding
Enough room to move away from heat
Protection from drafts, pets, and predators

Ducklings should always have access to water when eating. However, the water setup should reduce splashing so the brooder stays as dry as possible.

As Rouen ducklings grow, they need more room, stronger bedding management, and safe outdoor transition areas. Because they grow into larger ducks, customers should plan housing and pen space early.

Is This Breed Right for You?

Choose Rouen Ducks if you want:

A large domestic duck
A French dual-purpose breed
A duck used for eggs and meat
A calm and sociable pet duck
A good ranch pond duck
A duck with Mallard-style coloring
A breed that does not fly far
A good insect-control duck
A slower-growing alternative to Pekins
A duck with show potential

Rouen Ducks are not the best choice for customers who want the fastest meat duck, a high-production egg layer, a small bantam duck, a strong flying duck, or ducklings shipped to Hawaii.

I bought two rouens on 5/22/25 when I picked up an order at their shop. They had some straight run duck I got a male and a female. On 10/14/25 she started laying eggs. I couldn’t be happier with them.
