Description

Self Blue Old English Bantam Chicken

Breed History and Origin

Cackle Hatchery® is here to help anyone looking for high-quality chicken breeds, including miniature varieties like the Self Blue Old English Bantam. This breed traces back to traditional European game fowl and has been refined into a true bantam for exhibition. The Self Blue variety was recognized by the American Standard of Perfection in 1965 and remains a consistent choice among poultry exhibitors. Cackle Hatchery® has been developing its own bloodline or strain of pure Self Blue Old English Game Bantams since 1982, focusing on maintaining proper type, feather quality, and uniform coloration.

Appearance and Breed Characteristics

The Self Blue Old English Bantam is known for its smooth, even blue-gray feathering across the entire body, without the lacing or pattern seen in other blue varieties. This uniform “self” coloring gives the bird a clean and consistent appearance that performs well in exhibition. Like other Old English Game Bantams, it features a proud, upright posture, tight feathering, and a well-balanced, athletic build. Mature roosters typically weigh around 24 ounces and hens around 22 ounces, with pullets and cockerels slightly smaller. As part of the Game Bantam (All Colors) class, it is bred to strict standards for symmetry and presentation.

Egg Production and Broodiness

The Self Blue Old English Bantam is not intended for egg production and is considered a poor layer. Hens lay small cream or tinted bantam-sized eggs in limited quantities. However, they are known to be setters, meaning hens will go broody and can hatch eggs. Fertility generally ranges from 40–55%, with a recommended mating ratio of approximately nine females to one male.

Temperament and Backyard Suitability

This breed is active but generally easy to tame with regular handling. Many keepers find them manageable and suitable as pets, even in family settings. Their small size means they require very little space and feed, making them a practical option for backyard flocks. They tend to do well with other calm breeds, though their active nature should be considered. A roost height of 3 feet or higher is recommended.

Production Positioning and Exhibition Use

The Self Blue Old English Bantam is best positioned as an ornamental and exhibition breed. It is not a production bird but is valued for its uniform blue coloration, clean feathering, and adherence to APA standards. This makes it a strong choice for poultry shows and for hobbyists seeking a refined bantam with a consistent color profile.

Breeding Note / Color Note

Self Blue (also referred to as lavender in some lines) requires careful breeding to maintain consistent, even coloration across all feathers. Selective breeding should focus on avoiding patchiness or uneven tones while preserving proper body type and feather quality.

If my memory is correct, I ordered 20 or so. This was in hopes of getting a few hens as these are always rooster strong. I had some mishaps, but was able to save 15 or so. To my amazement on 2 roosters and the rest are all hens. This is AWESOME!!!!

  2. The Bradleys

We raised 7 of 8 babies and ended up with 4 roosters and 3 hens. They are super sweet and good representations of the breed 👌

  3. Sherry Vance

These birds are so sweet and tiny. I love them. I took a star off the rating because they all had splayed leg. I made little braces for them and they are all doing good now.

  4. Henry

    Happy

Chicks arrived alive and well. So far so good on day one.

  5. Nik

    Amazing Little Birds

I spent a lot of time with my chicks and the adults are extremely friendly. Love getting pet. If i sit outside they come over and take a nap on my lap, they even beg for scraps. Awesome breed for a first time bantam owner. Also pretty smart about not getting nabbed by predators.

    Thank You

I want to thank you for my bantam old english chickens. I have never had chicks that love me so much. I treat them as though they are my children. They like to be held and kissed. I really love them. Thanks again. If I need more I will order from you folks again.
