Splash Cochin Bantam Chicken

Breed History and Origin

The breeders at Cackle Hatchery® have years of experience working with Cochin Bantams, including the Splash Cochin Bantam, a newer recognized color variety of this classic breed. Cochins originated in Asia and became widely known for their heavy feathering and calm temperament. The Splash variety was recognized by the American Standard of Perfection in 2014, making it one of the more recent additions to the Cochin Bantam lineup. Cackle Hatchery® has been developing its own bloodline or strain of pure Cochin Bantams since 1971, focusing on feather quality, temperament, and consistency across color varieties.

Appearance and Breed Characteristics

The Splash Cochin Bantam features a soft white base color with irregular black or blue splashing across the feathers, giving each bird a unique and varied pattern. Like all Cochins, it has a full, rounded appearance due to its dense feathering, which extends down the legs and feet. This heavy feathering places it in the Feather Legged Bantam class and contributes to its larger-than-life look despite its small size. Mature roosters typically weigh around 30 ounces and hens around 26 ounces, with pullets and cockerels slightly smaller.

Egg Production and Broodiness

The Splash Cochin Bantam offers fair egg production for a bantam, laying small brown eggs on a consistent but moderate basis. One of the breed’s strongest traits is broodiness. Hens are reliable setters and are commonly used to hatch eggs, making them a valuable addition to breeding flocks or backyard setups. Fertility typically ranges from 40–55%, with a recommended mating ratio of approximately six females to one male.

Temperament and Backyard Suitability

This breed is extremely docile and easy to handle, making it one of the best choices for families, beginners, and backyard keepers. They are calm birds that do well in mixed flocks with other gentle breeds. Their small size and low feed requirements make them efficient to keep, and their friendly nature makes them ideal pets. Due to their heavy feathering and leg coverage, they prefer lower roosts, typically between 0 to 2 feet, and require clean, dry housing conditions.

Production Positioning and Exhibition Use

The Splash Cochin Bantam is best positioned as a pet, broody hen, and ornamental breed with light egg production. While they do lay eggs, their primary value lies in their temperament, broodiness, and unique feather pattern. With APA recognition, they are also a strong exhibition bird, particularly when color contrast and feather quality are well maintained.

Breeding Note / Color Note

Splash coloration does not breed true and is part of blue genetics, meaning offspring may include blue, black, or splash variations. Maintaining balanced contrast and even distribution of color requires careful selection. Breeders should also focus on preserving the dense feathering and rounded body type typical of Cochins.

I can’t wait to order more Splash Cochins in the spring! Definitely a must have if you are looking for sweet chickens that are adorable running around in all their fluffy butt cuteness.

  2. Carly Kubinski

I wish they offered sexing on this breed. I ordered 5, got 6, but ended up with 4 roosters. I am giving 5 stars anyway because they are the friendliest little fluffy buggers. I am absolutely smitten with them. The splash coloring is more prominent on some than others. One of my roosters even has brown mixed in with his coloring. They are sweet little chickens. My hens love to be held. I will definitely be ordering more in the future.

    Great, Well-Rounded Hatchery

Ordered 5 Splash Cochins along with three other bantam breeds. Before shipping Cackle answered every question I had and was very patient with me. When a customer service representative didn’t have an answer, they asked around and got one for me. During shipping I updated emails and notifications every step of the way. Chicks arrived super healthy, active and clean. I don’t see myself ever having to look for another hatchery besides Cackle.
Overall really, really great customer service !

    Amazing ladies

I ended up with more than I paid for in my order—and almost all of them were female. They turned into lovely ladies, and so sweet and docile! I always order from cackle, I’ve never been disappointed with a product!

  9. Adrien

    Excellent First Time Experience

First time to ever consider dealing with an online order hatchery. I live in a suburban neighborhood and only wanted 5 chicks to free range in my rose gardens and wanted their plumage to match the color theme of the outdoor furniture upholstery and main rooms. With having white, gray, blues, and black markings on their feathers, I knew they’d be perfect! Placed my order and received my box of healthy live chicks + 1 on the desired delivery date. The process was easy, the hatchery is amazingly helpful, and my beautiful chickens are thriving and love their garden home.
